vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 This is gonna be a big week for the NL Wildcard and for my Astros, as they went 4-2 on their roadtrip this past week and are now only 4 games out of the Wildcard. The offense looks to be rounding into form and the pitching has been good, despite Pettitte's loss today. It's gonna be a big week with St. Louis playing Cincinnati 7 of their next 10 games while the 'Stros get the Pirates, Padres, and Cubbies. The Astros' top pitching prospect Jason Hirsh is rumored to be getting the call to face the Padres on the 12th, which will mean that someone will have to be sent down. Also, super utility man Eric Bruntlett, who was sent down to Round Rock last week, is going to be called back up this weekend, so another move will have to be made. One of those moves is probably to send Jason Lane back down. The other one...possibly Preston Wilson for prospects? Outside of that, I have no idea who would be demoted. Yeah, so everything's starting to look alrite offense wise for the Astros-especially Luke Scott-the guy that hit for the cycle the other week against the D'Backs. After having a hellacious Spring Training in 05, he proceeded to hit about .180 for a couple months as the starting left fielder before being sent down. This time, after being recalled, he's got a line of .403/.456/.645 in 19 games. So, if the Astros make it to the postseason, I'm gonna send Luke Scott a 'thank you' note. DMann2003 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 And in response to that, this is pretty much make it or break it time for my Reds. With 7/10 games against the Cardinals (who we're 6-2 against this season), we have to capitalize or we're sunk. It's safe to say that the Reds have done far better than most gave them credit for at the beginning of the season but with 50 or so games left we need to take both these series against St. Louis. No more losing 4-2 leads in the 8th ya hear me Cincy? Rameriez is finding his groove I feel so if we get the bats out tonight we should take game one, as I'm going down there tonight (1/2 price tickets AND 1 dollar hot dogs). Gert T 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 As a Cards fan who lives in Dayton, I do like both teams and wish that one would step up. They've both been treading water lately, like how the Reds gained what 1 or 2 games during the Cards 8 game losing streak? I am concerned though because the Reds have played the Cardinals really well this year.
Guest Report post Posted August 7, 2006 I'm so not worried about the Dodgers getting to the playoffs.
devo 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 I'm really pulling for the Reds to make the playoffs one way or another for a couple reasons. For one, they're my second favorite team, thanks mainly to the proximity of Cincinnati and partly because most of my friends are Reds fans. Also, I would absolutely love to see a couple of playoff games between the Mets and Reds at Great American Ballpark. I was lucky enough to see the Wild Card playoff in '99 between the two teams in person, and I imagine that the only thing that could top that is seeing one or two games of a full-blown series. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 If for some reason my Astros don't make the playoffs, I'm really pushing for the Reds. After seeing Biggio and Bagwell play in a World Series last year, I'd like to see Junior get there. He deserves it. Either way, it would still be nice to see some new teams get to the postseason. With that said, I'm still betting on the Astros.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 DBacks get Livan Hernandez.
devo 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Never woulda thought that Hernandez would be moved before Soriano. Still, taking this deal into account, I'll be absolutely shocked if Alfonso's still a National at the end of the month.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Decent pickup for the D-Backs. They needed some better starting pitching, than the handful of Hispanic scrubs they have after Webb and Batista. That's why I was surprised they let El Duke go earlier in the year. But, I don't know if it was worth giving up prospects. Even if the D-Backs can win the West, they're not going far in the playoffs. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Ken Rosenthal's new article says that according to Will Carroll the Houston Astros were, in fact, the team that was awarded the waiver claim for Andruw Jones. Supposedly, the deal would have been Andruw Jones for Troy Patton, a lower-tier minor league pitching prospect. That woulda been sweet...man.
the max 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 The Red Sox need to rape the Royals this week. Time to go on a roll. They've looked bad against Cleveland and Tampa, two teams that they should have blown out of the water.
devo 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Yeesh. This game really couldn't have started more poorly for the Reds; on six pitches, the first four Cardinal batters hit four doubles and score three runs. Edit: Well, they got a couple outs, but it's now 5-0 after a two-run Yadier Molina (Yadier Molina?!?) home run.
Gert T 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Yeah quite a start for the Cards.
jwest27 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2006 Haha, yes. That was really quite fun to watch. Wait, shit. Jeff Weaver is pitching. Probably should have gotten like 7 more doubles there.
UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2006 The Phillies did something brilliant, by sending "would have been released anyway" shits pitcher Ryan Franklin to the Reds to infect their bullpen. It seems to be working, as the Reds have already given up 7 runs in 2 innings. _____ Also, potential for a big log jam at the top of the NL Wildcard tonight. If the the Dodgers and DBacks win admist the Reds losing, there'd be a big 3-way tie for the Wild Card. Plus Colorado and Phillies 2.5 back. ___ Plus 4 White Sox games this week is ridiculous. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2006 The implosion of Mark Buehrle continues. Ozzie should shoulder some of the blame, though, since he was poised to have a quality start. But as usual, Ozzie stuck with his starter, even though the announcers were positive he was going to rightfully be taken out. Cue several hits, walks and three runs. Couldn't happen to a better guy. therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2006 Howard hit his 39th tonight and the Phils won. It's really lucky Gillick actually was able to send Ryan Franklin and his shitty pitching to the wild-card leading Reds today...
MFer 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2006 (edited) Liriano gets owned by the Tigers AGAIN!!! Yeah some ppl will say that he wasn't himself cause he skipped a start. But if u look at the numbers, Detroit is the only team that he really has trouble with. Zach Miner put in another quality start, Brandon Inge keeps dazzling us with the glove, and Craig Monroe continues to shine as of late. This team is here to stay. Check that, apparently Liriano has a sore elbow and is out indefinitely. Even so, Detroit's win tonight was still impressive. Annabelle 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2006 I love this team. Oh yeah, Ricky Ledee's going to the Mets. you were singing a different tune 2 weeks ago. but i agree with you, and i was wrong. they've certainly climbed out of their funk. plus they've (somewhat) proven that the pieces they have right now should be good enough to get them into the playoffs. and i am happy about this. a lot. UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2006 MLB.com has this headline up: "On Monday, it was Livan Hernandez and Ryan Franklin. But they're not likely to be the last players on the move as 20 teams are within seven games of a possible playoff berth." And they show a picture of Lieber as someone who may be traded. I just think that kinda contradicts the "within x games of a playoff berth" stat but meh. The Yankees basically said "Jon, your work ethic is not good, you are out of shape, and your contract is ridiculous for next year, we're not interested" so I don't see how other teams are gonna shell out major bucks. _________________ Wildcard Action - August 8th Reds (Tied NL Wildcard) Vs. St. Louis Dodgers (Tied NL Wildcard, 1 back NL West) Vs. Colorado (2.5 back NL Wildcard, 3.5 back NL West) DBacks (1 back NL Wildcard, 2 back NL West) Vs. Giants (3 back NL Wildcard, 4 back NL West) Phillies (2.5 back NL Wildcard) Vs. Braves Astros (3.5 back NL Wildcard) Vs. Pirates Brewers (4.5 back NL Wildcard) Vs. Cubs ________________ I think the best chance this week for the Phillies is to win, with Dodgers winning and taking over the NL West, the Reds free-falling, and the Padres playing .500 ball.
