Okay, a few of my boys at work have this little bet going. We just finished working on and watching Dreamworks "Dreamgirls" which features Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Danny Glover, Eddie Murphy among others and it's supposedly coming out during the same week as Rocky Balboa (save for release date changes), so we're wondering who will take the top spot. I know it's months away from being significant, but I'm going with Rocky Balboa just because of the nostalgia factor. That and Dreamgirls is Chicago meets Rent (a 3 hour musical) and may be Rated R (the F bomb was dropped frequently). Few of my boys think otherwise, claiming it wil be a draw for the African American community. Being african american (or half anyway), I can't envision black teens going to see this movie. My votes for Rocky.

To answer the question, Dreamgirls will do $20-30 million its first week. Rocky will do half of that. The 5th movie in that "franchise" was the drizzling shits and the character already had brain damage. How much can they do to make the 6th movie any better? At least with Dreamgirls there will be SOME positive reviews even if it's just for individual performances. There's nothing potentially exciting about seeing Stallone who has got to be pushing 60 playing a retarded boxer, unless of course you're going strictly to watch his body. Even then, I don't see anyway this movie makes money.

Eddie Murphy is at this point the least likely box office draw of the four people referenced. Beyonce has numerous #1 songs, and has appeared in multiple #1 movies (including the most recent Austin Powers movie). She's reached the level of fame that she only needs to be referred to by one name, and most people that aren't complete social lepers know who she is. Jamie Foxx was nominated for, and won, awards for appearing in a WORLD-famous movie; hosted an MTV awards show; and appeared in the #1 hit with Kanye West. (umm, you have heard of MTV, right?) Danny Glover has been famous for 20+ years, and is arguably one of the most respected black actors of the last 2 decades.

Austin Powers' movies suck except for some awesome moments here and there so I don't watch them. I listen to the radio a lot but I could not legit name one song she ever did. Shania Twain, Alizee and Shakira are all way more reconizable for me.

True and there will be people rewatching the movie as well. Once word gets out on how good it is that will bring even more people into the theatres. I think it will do well but it's hard to predict exactly how well it'll do. I think it'll have staying power at least.
