Hard Candy

Recommended Posts

So yeah, I missed this one in theaters, but had heard about it and finally got to rent it last night. I must say, except for maybe Hostel, this is easily the most disturbing film I've seen so far this year. There's really not even a whole lot to the film, but the tremendous acting is what puts it over the top. The movie just fucks with you in so many ways, you know good and damn well that Jeff is a pedo who is soliciting children, but at the same time, Haley is such a conniving bitch that the film almost does a 180 and makes you feel bad for Jeff, and you begin to hope that he gets to just fucking butcher her. The ending is fucked up too, although I would have at least liked to see them film the alternate ending that you really would have liked to have seen. Oh well, dfeinitely check this one out, it's a mind fuck and a half.

I'm really surprised by how angry I was over the ending.

In fairness, the guy was guilty of letting an innocent girl die. Which may or may not be his only crime. But the girl was just as bad. Even if he deserved to be punished, her whole 'vigilante' deal just sickened me. By the end I was HOPING they'd both die. But when she got away I was pissed.

I was just glad she wasn't a figment of his imagination. When any sign that she was ever there was gone, and during part of her speech on the roof, I was dreading that they were gonna do a "all in his head" type ending.

Never came here, so it's gonna be a first viewing when it arrives from glorious Columbia House. Can't beat $10.50 for a new release like this.

That's where I ordered mine also.

Holeeeee shit. That's a movie.

I was seriously close to hyperventilating in the middle. Never, never get that way about movies.

I thought the ending was great and the two leads were fantastic.

I thought the ending was fantastic, because really--did Jeff kill the girl? Did Aaron kill the girl? Does it matter? I don't think it does. I'm not making moral arguments on behalf of the film one way or another. Also, I loved that it was ambiguous about whether or not Hayley was related to Donna, or just vengeful, or what. It would have been very cheesy had she come out and said it one way or another, because that was so not her.

Two characters true to themselves the whole way through, never a contrivance--it's rare you see that.

Yea saw it in theaters as well. Thought it was pretty good and Ellen Page is gonna be huge soon. Pretty cute as well.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned that she was Treena Lahey on The Trailer Park Boys.

Was blown away by the first 40 minutes or so, kind of meh about the rest. The vague acting where you know something isn't right about either character, the intimate close ups, the entire set up. Just amazing. Still, I found the final third or so to be way to over the top and dare I say a little hokey when compared with the fantastic build.

Not that disturbing at all though, not sure why the movie get's pimped as such. But Suspenseful and tense, very much.

Also:

Jeff, a snuff guy? Come on. Why drop the "thin moral line between lusting for willing underage girls and all out child pornography" exploration in favor of a goofy snuff murder. What a lame "Bait and switch." Your not breaking any new ground by saying that assisting a murder for pictures is wrong. Too much black and white by the finish as Hayley becomes completely justified in movie terms.
