Guest Felonies!

On the other side of town, motherfucking assholes, both of you, Messrs. MacPhail and Ramirez. Who is Aramis to demand $15 million a year to dog it like he does? And why did Andy The Clown stick a loophole here that even makes this fuck-up possible? Now Hendry is really fucked. But hey, congratulations on getting promoted to commissioner of baseball, Andy! HE IS BASEBALL ROYALTY IN CASE YOU WERE NOT AWARE

Hey now! They signed Lou Pinella! That at least guarantees that they'll finish ahead of the Pirates.

I don't get it, though. It's 2004, and we need to lock up arguably our best 3rd baseman since Ron Santo for several more years, so we do, and all seems well. But wait! Evidently this genius who's going to run this fucking sport allowed him to slip away after '06, right before slipping away himself. How could a team be this fucking stupid? It's not even like a player-option year deal or something. This just totally invalidates the multi-year contract we needed to obtain.

Sheesh! And they say Yankee fans are bad...

Yeah, how dare we be upset for losing our second best hitter. But fuck 'em both. Hendry should've sealed the deal earlier and Ramirez for worrying more about money than loyalty. But whatever, he'll get paid an assload of money with this weak market, so more power to him.

Well, with the Cubs saying they're going to up the payroll in '07, they'd be idiots not to give Ramirez what he wants. Their offense is already in trouble without him and who knows what Lee will bring to the table next year. I say if they were able to justify signing Neifi and Glendon to two-year deals, they can pony up the cash to keep Ramirez.

I was listening to a little bit of The Score this morning, even though I should know better, and everybody who called said the Cubs should just forget about Aramis and allocate the $11 million he turned down (!!!) elsewhere as needed. However, there are some things to bear in mind here:

1) people who call sports talk radio stations are usually idiots

2) people who call this particular sports talk radio station are always idiots

3) 670 is That Other Team's station, and their hosts and listeners have an obvious bias for That Other Team. I wouldn't be surprised if "Mike from Buffalo Grove" saying to just forget about Aramis was really "Kenny from Bridgeport" prank-calling the station.

Boston also exercised their option on Tim Wakefield. Auditions for his personal catcher will take place this Saturday.

Jim Edmonds made the same announcement, which is odd for a center fielder.

It took me a minute to get that, but once I did, I laughed for a good 17 seconds.

Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte are filing for free agency, although neither are sure that they're returning. In fact, Pettitte sounds less likely that he'll return than Clemens. It's a shame, too, because Pettitte's still a relatively young man, only 34, and still in the upper echelon of lefty starters. However, I remain confident that both will return to Houston. I forsee Pettitte signing a one-year deal with an option and Roger doing his half-year thing. In the article I read, Clemens still refers to the Astros as "us" and "we" and "our team" and says that he'd like to see Andy come back and pitch for the hometown team.

And the more that I think about it, I'm not sure if I wanna see Houston sign Carlos Lee. Sure, he's pretty consistent for 30+ homers a year and about 110 RBI, but he's getting up there in age, wants a five-year deal, and isn't that great defensively. I heard a suggestion that the Astros should look into Jose Guillen for a 'Preston Wilson-esque' deal which would provide an easy way out of it. I'd go for that, if Guillen is healthy (and assuming that if he sucks or his legs fall off, Hunter Pence would be brought up and live up to the hype), but I really get the feeling that this offseason Drayton McClane, he of the 1.2 billion dollar net worth, is gonna spend some money to get either Carlos Lee or less likely Alfonso Soriano. But I thought we'd spend money last year, too...and the year before, so with that said, Welcome to Houston Jose Guillen!

In his blog today, Buster Olney talks about how now is the perfect time for the Marlins to trade Dontrelle Willis. The rationale being the following:

1) His value might be on the downswing. He pitched decent this year with 13 wins and a 3.87 (ish) ERA but nothing close to his 2005 campaign.

2) The Marlins have one of the best young rotations in the league and they don't really need him

3) The pitching crop is thin this offseason and they could get everything they need and desire (mainly an elite CF prospect).

I'm torn, really. I agree with his points and I do realize that Dontrelle might not be as good as he was last year. At the same time, this guy is one of the hardest working, most fun, and best examples of a ballplayer there is out there right now. Any team would be lucky to have a guy like him around. He always says the right thing - always plays the game right way. That's the kind of player I want on my team to cheer for.

It's one of those things. Either way could be acceptable but I'm not sure what I'd be happiest with. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens and deal with it afterwards. Because at this point - I honestly think it could go either way.

I'd deal one of those extra pitchers first. Why deal Willis if you can get something big in return for Scott Olsen or Josh Johnson? Willis's comp list isn't encouraging, but most of those guys played in better pitchers' eras. It is a very tough decision though.

And while looking at the 2006 Marlins, I couldn't help but notice Miguel Olivo's batting line. 103 strikeouts and 9 walks? And I thought Ronny Cedeno was hacktastic.

I don't really want him. Good postseason pitcher, but just a barely above average pitcher.

The Yankees only had two above-average starters last year. I'd rather have Jeff Suppan every fifth day than trotting out Sidney Ponson, Shawn Chacon or Kris Wilson and seeing if they don't suck today.

The last time Jeff Suppan pitched in the AL East, he put up an ERA+ of 85. Supposedly he wants $10 million/year. Yankee fans didn't like paying Mussina. How are they going to feel when Suppan shows up every fifth day and gets rocked for five runs? At least Pavano stays home where he does the least amount of damage.

Why don't they just go after Jeff Weaver too?

The Sons of Sam Horn posters are starting to get crazy with this Daisuke Matsuzaka stuff. Most are advocating a posting fee of $30-$40 million or basically whatever post it takes to get his negotiating rights. They act like the guy is this once in a lifetime player that you have to get no matter what the cost. The thing is, I bet 90% of these people have never even seen the guy pitch. We've seen how hard it is for pitchers to make the NL to AL jump, why would anyone suspect that coming from Japan is any easier? Seems like a lot of money to sink into an unsure thing even if his stuff is off the charts.

In a somewhat weird news item, Allard Baird, the former General Manager of the Kansas City Royals, was appointed to Assistant GM of the Boston Red Sox today. I guess they feel really strongly about him, but I'd still be weary based on that trainwreck he was a part of in KC (no way it was his fault entirely, but he was still a major player).

Roger still refers to himself as a Yankee. Dont trust the man and what he says.

Try like 99 percent. People have only seen him via highlights. I still remember that Hideki Irabu was supposed to be the Japanese Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. He ended up turning into the Fat Toad who drank a 2 liter bottle of soda per day.

Oh, I wasn't saying that juding by him referring to the Astros as 'we' or 'us' that meant he was coming back. I was just relaying what the article said. I'm sure that even if he pitches for the Yanks or the Sawx, he'll still refer to the Astros as 'we', as he has business interests in the minor league affiliates and he's got that 10-year personal services contract.

Yeah, but 40 million, 10 million a year for a fifth starter?

Comcast reported that the Phillies are expecting to make an offer to Soriano this week. They also mentioned a possible deal sending Burrell to Arizona for Johnny Estrada. And, they are apparently interested in Gary Sheffield.

My thoughts on this:

1) I'd love to see Soriano get signed, but I just don't see it happening. Then again I didn't see them signing Jim Thome either.

2) I like the move, even if they eat a chunk of Burrell's salary.

3) I'd be cautious of signing Shef. I'm not convinced that his personality would mesh well with the Phils.

If any team can pay that for a fourth/fifth starter, it's the Yankees.
