I thought we were in the midst of another magical Mets comeback, but I guess some things can't be overcome by luck alone. Injuries be damned; the Mets were outplayed tonight and over most of the series. There's really no execuse for how poorly they hit in every game but 2 and 4, and even if they had made it to the World Series, they would have been eaten alive if they maintained that level of play. I can't think of any word more appropriate than heartbreaking to see such a wonderful season end like that. This is going to sound melodramatic, but baseball's dead to me until Spring Training starts up again. If I watch any of the World Series, it'll be incidental glimpses made while channel surfing. It's looking less and less likely that I'll ever see any team I like win another championship in my lifetime. Now you know how Cubs fans feel. AW SHUCKS No no, Cubs fans get to root for other teams. Between the Knicks (never), Mets (1986), Giants (1991) and Rangers, 1994 was the last chance I got to see a title run by one of the teams I support. The Knicks are a lost cause, the Mets will never get another opportunity like this, the Giants aren't capable of winning a SB, and I really don't give a shit about hockey. It's 4 times as bad when you have a team to root for year round and you've had to watch them lose 4 world championships since the last victory all while the Yankees have recently won as many titles in a 5 year stretch as the four of them in my entire life. Add in the fact that the Knicks and Rangers have been leading the world in payroll, and the Mets have been top 5 for a long time and we can't even buy a damned ring. At least if I lived in a small market I could say that we just can't compete financially. As it is, there's really nothing that can be done to improve any of those teams enough to win a title. I don't think I've ever been as quiet and not fuming after a catch or great play that goes against my team, but it was just that great of a catch by Chavez. When you've never seen a championship it's easier to adjust to not having any. It's kind of like sex that way. It's far worse not to get any when you've had some and know how good it feels, especially when your scumbag neighbor gets to bang models year after year and brags about it all the time. If I'd known October 1986 - January 1987 was going to be the highlight of my career as a fan I probably wouldn't have gotten hooked on sports. It's depressing to suck annually but it's even worse when you get your hopes up in isolated years and get embarassed like the '99 Knicks, the 2000 Mets and the Giants team that made the Ravens look like da greatest of all time, or even worse when you shit the bed and lose a winnable series like the 1994 Knicks or become the 1 team out of 100 to lose Game 7 at home after winning Game 6 like the 2006 Mets. From Chavez's catch to Suppan getting out of the bases loaded jam with one out to Wainright finally striking out Beltran, it was just tremendously exciting baseball. Honestly, the last time I felt this way about watching a baseball series was when the D-Backs beat the Yankees in 2001. I was very careful not to post anything that might jinx the Cardinals before the game. I said that I thought it was weird that Perez was starting and just left it at that. Not that I really believe in such things, but it has seemed to blow up some of my larger wagers in the past. (Yeah, I was on the Cards. Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted October 20, 2006 I feel bad for the Mets. A team that dominates it's league like they did deserves to represent them in the World Series. Chalk it up to losing Pedro and El Duque right before the playoffs. Maine and Perez stepped up, but it killed their depth and took away some of their swagger. I feel bad for the diehard Mets fans, so many of them were convinced that this was the year. WFAN is going to be so depressing tonight. The Cardinals pitching, bullpen especially, was impressive. I give them a punchers chance against the Tigers, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them win or at least take it to 6 or 7 games. One thing working in their favor is the long layoff for Detroit, they have a great opportunity to steal game 1. LaRussa/Leyland is such a great matchup. There's definitely more pressure on STL though. 2nd trip to the series in 3 years, always in the NLCS, some of their key guys are getting up there agewise... I mean really, how many times did they actually come up short with the best team? 2004 is the only time in the WS, and last year was the only time in the NLCS. I don't think anyone thought the Cardinals had the best team in 2000, 2002, etc. They were a division winner that made the playoffs, that was about it. I didn't think they'd make it this far, but once the Yankees went down the Mets' continued playoff existence didn't thrill me. The Mets only had that Subway Series to offer. Mets/Tigers would have been a bleh matchup, whereas Cardinals/Tigers has some actual history and drama. naiwf 0 Report post Posted October 20, 2006 Those same Cards fans didn't really set the NLCS numbers on fire this year. Detroit's not bringing Red Sox type eyes with them, WS or not. Not to say that Mets/Tigers was on par with Yankees/Dodgers but St. Louis/Detroit isn't the kind of matchup that casual fans will devote all of their free time to watching either. There's no team to root against and with the expection of Pujols there's no one to watch if you don't root for either of the two teams playing.
