On the eve of Kurt's TNA debut.....

Recommended Posts

1) Vs. Edge, Backlash 2002.

Simple, smooth wrestling featuring little psychology, just Angle hammering Edge until the kid passes out. Of course, plucky babyface Edge battles back, only to get outsmarted by Angle in the end. Certainly not as well-known or praised as other Angle matches but it features a healthy Angle just prior to his super 02-03 run before his neck problems flared up.

2) Vs. Benoit, Rumble 2003.

The height of Angle 02-03 run, this well-paced match featured Angle once again pounding on a plucky babyface, drawing in the crowd until the final eight minute sprint to the finish. Just fantastic.

3) Vs. 'Taker, No Way Out 2006.

Angle's last great match. Getting anything good out of 'Taker at his age is tough but Angle slows it down and builds slowly to another wild sprint finish.

4) Vs. Guerrero, Wrestlemania 20

Angle's at his best when working with superworkers like Benoit, Guerrero and Mysterio who can keep up with Angle and then push him to another level. This match wasn't blow away but showed how to work with restraint and pull the crowd in with a simple story. Loved it.

5) Vs. Brock, Iron Man Match on Smackdown, Fall 2003.

Some hated this match. I loved it however and every time Angle matched up with Brock, he really broke out as a babyface. Facing a monster like Lesnar really forced Angle to sell, which has always been a weak point.

I'm a bit suprised you didn't mention the match against Shawn Michaels from Wrestlemania 21, eventhough I don't particularly like it.

Guest Coffey

I thought his match with Austin at Summerslam was his best match. Even with the screwy ref ending.

Here are my top 3

1 - vs Chris Benoit - Royal Rumble 2003

Hard hitting technical clinic between these two. This is what I consider the standard for a perfect match. It also tells a great story. Benoit and Angle throw everything they have at eachother, and neither is able to put the other away. Angle finally in an act of desperation puts Benoit in the Ankle Lock, then drops back into a grapevine leglock. Theres no way Benoit can make it to the topes, and is finally forced to submit. Perfection!

2 - vs Undertaker - No Way Out 2006

As others have said, its Taker's last great match (at least up to this point) and a testament to Angle's ability to carry anyone to a fantastic bout. Don't get me wrong, Taker busted his ass in ways he hasnt done in years for this match, but a lot of the credit has to go to Angle as well.

3 - vs Brock Lesnar - Wrestlemania XIX

Not a great match from a technical standpoint, but a hard-hitting spot fest full of stiff suplexes and insane bumps by a man who could've possibly died in the ring at any given moment, and who had no business participating in the match. The match is perhaps given more attention than it deserves because of the blown SSP from Brock, but it was still a great fight between the two.

Kurt Angle's 5 Best Matches

1. Benoit/Angle Rumble 03

2. Benoit/Austin SummerSlam 01

3. 40-Minute Fatal Fourway #1 Contender's Match on Smackdown! before Armageddon 2002

4. No Mercy 02 - Tag Titles

5. Smackdown 2/3 Falls Late 2002 Tag Title Match

re: Angle/Lesnar

Seriously, Angle/Lesnar followed the MUCH better work Angle did with Eddie, Rey, Benoit, Edge, etc. in late 2002. If you watched late 2002 and then the Angle/Lesnar stuff, you'd think: "Lesnar/Angle, damn that was pretty good." But you'd be dissapointed that it wasn't as quick or suspenseful as the Smackdown Six stuff. They botched the WM finish, and the match result was a 100% foregone conclusion, anyway. SSlam's match was mediocre and suffered from Vince being involved. Smackdown free TV Ironman was very good, but not better than those 5.
