NHL Thread: November Edition

Higgins and Kovalev are game time decisions for Montreal tomorrow night match up.

Maxim Afeineginov is out with an "upper body injury" (What, is Pat Quinn coaching Buffalo now?)

There's only 30 teams.

It's getting near the point where something has to be done in Ottawa. They blew a 3-0 lead to the fucking CAPITALS. They're now 1-6-1 in games decided by two goals or fewer. They're also 13th in the East, ahead of only Boston and Philadelphia.

So, GM's meetings today discuss the scheduling.

It'll never happen, but the only way to balance the schedule is to use latitude as a geographical divider instead of longitude. Say, six teams in five divisions. That way there's no one team playing in another zone more often than another.

My chain of teams moving (also pretty far-fetched) eventually broke down. Say, Dallas into the central. Columbus to the NorthEast, Boston to the Pacific....Try it - always breaks down.

I can hear the chortles now, but my first idea was the best (albeit most unlikely) stab I could take at solving the divisional woes.

The league would be foolish to move Boston away from games with Montreal, Toronto or Buffalo ... two of those teams are their long-time rivals (Habs & Sabres) and Toronto/Boston is Original 6 hockey.

The only way that I would want the NHL to break the B's away from those teams would be the creation of an all-Canada division.

so what team has the most points in the league?

Sabres have the best record.

12-1-1 to 11-0-4.

There's nothing wrong with what teams are in what division.

I didn't see no wrong with going out to the Pacific to face all of those teams.

Guest Felonies!

But the counter-argument is that Chicago and Detroit are being robbed of rivalry games with Toronto, also Original 6 hockey, and they'd been in the Norris Division together throughout the peak of the NHL. I might like the Original 6 as one division, actually, but then Chicago and Detroit lose games with St. Louis. Hmm.

I don't agree about the rivalry thing because they're just created in the playoffs, anyway. Go back a year, and who would care about a Sabres/Hurricanes game.

Hannu Toivonen has been sent down to Providence and the Bruins called up Brian Finley to back up Tim Thomas. Rumors are swirling about the Bruins acquiring a big name goaltender (Nabokov, CuJo, Osgood, et all) to start for them. Thomas is expected to start on Thursday against the Leafs. Toivonen hasn't been the same since last week, when he apparently got his bell rung by Jurcina in practice, when Jurcina hit him in the head with a slapshot. I think we've figured out why Jurcina has been in the doghouse lately...

I can't help but feel like this season is starting to spin out of control. And if they think that Evgeni fucking Nabokov is going to solve any of their problems (besides ditching Murray, which they would have to to take on the contract...but then you lose Murray's scoring), I don't see this being a very productive year for them with regards to the playoffs. The game last week against Buffalo keeps replaying in my head. 4-1 lead. 4-2. 4-3. 4-4. It's like watching the Red Sox of old rip your heart out as they collapsed in the 9th.

While I'd love to see the B's acquire a legit #1 netminder, I just don't see it happening ... or, worse, I see it happening and have it be counterproductive.

There really aren't any available #1 goalies, IMHO, and if the B's did make a trade for CuJo or Nabakov or someone comparable, they'd be trading away commodities that I'd rather see them either keep (Murray) or trade away for something that would help them build for the long-term (Stuart or Sturm).

Give Hannu a few weeks in Providence to get his head back together, and then either choose him OR Thomas as the #1 that gets a majority of the playing time. You might lose a few more games now, but hopefully the goalie - and team - gains some confidence and momentum.

I can't help but feel like this season is starting to spin out of control.
I think we feel this way because it is. The team can't afford to give away games - and points - like they have been - the Montreal game, the St Louis game, the Buffalo game ... that's 4 points that they just gave away.

I can't contribute anything to the B's discussion...That said, you touched on a legit #1 starter....Who's really got a starter to shop around, at least pre-playoffs on the horizon? San Jose, maaaybe Montreal, maaaaaybe Ottawa? NSkie said Cujo, which makes sense, assuming the fire sale in Phoenix starts soon, which seems kinda likely.

By the way, Baron - Tyler Brayton is his name. You'll be lucky if you don't get one next time I see. If you and I were Raiders lineman, Walter would not have been sacked nine fucking times.

The league needs to do a few things as far as divisions go. It's time for a balanced schedule, and new divisions. MUST GO WITH PLAYERS NAMES.

Gretzky Division: San Jose, Anaheim, LA, Phoenix and Vancouver

Messier Division: Colorado, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Minnesota

(Not for Brett) Hull Division: Nashville, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas and St. Louis

Lemieux Division: Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ottawa, Montreal and Buffalo

Orr Division: NYR, NYI, New Jersey, Boston, and Washington (I'll ELABORATE further on why Philadelphia is not here)

Clarke Division: Philadelphia, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Florida, and Carolina

I took Philadelphia away from the Rangers because in a balanced schedule, divisions don't really mean a whole lot of anything. The other obvious way to fix things is by making each conference into two divisions and have them play within the division in the playoffs.

Just get Detroit out the of Western Conference. Move one of those eastern teams to Portland or something.

You can't change any of the divisions around. All of them fit with each other so well, it'll ruin any real rivalries.

See, I think I disagree.

A rivalry is better suited, once built, to play two or three games a year instead of eight. And we're right back where we started.

Agreed, but I mean you can play six, and have it once a month, and your fine within the divison, or if not a home-n-home.

Yeah, that's true. I mean, I remember getting REALLY stoked for Leafs-Habs games when they played twice a year. They'll have played double thtat by XMas. Does that necessarily make a rivalry better? As Baron said, even if they played, say, once a month every month in the season, or even a home-and-home will do the trick. But Leafs-Bruins on back to back Thursdays?

Speaking of the Leafs....why is Mats Sundin killing so many penalties lately? Albeit effectively?

If your best player is 35 years old, that means, what, 18/19 minutes a game? Why would they make five or six of those a night down-a-man? I suppose I can't argue with results, but it's still perplexing.

Divisions really don't mean anything with the balanced schedule, I just want to see the Wings and Leafs play more.

ALSO, Gordie Howe Division > Bobby Clarke Division

I noticed that I forgot a few guys, but didn't want to change it.
