OAO Monday Night Raw Thread: 11/27/2006

Recommended Posts

But it doesn't really matter that 80% of the crowd doesn't know what OVW is; for one, the label had "Louisville, Kentucky" on it so there was a location available, and secondly the entire point is that DX just got rid of the Spirit Squad. It's the fact that they're gone that matters, not where they were going. The OVW bit was a nice touch (even though I don't get the OPS joke...if it even was a joke) and I admit to laughing when the delivery guy goes "Thank you very much, Mister....uh, McMahon!" after HBK signed for the package.

Kenny is probably the one guy they can bring back almost immediately, but with a slight gimmick tweak. Make him the cocky rookie who allies with Rated RKO...I think that would be a good start.

Kenny would be dead if they brought him back right away. He needs to stay gone for a long time so the Spirit Squad smell can die away. It's going to be hard enough to for any of the Squad to taken seriously, but bringing them back when it's still fresh in people's minds just makes it even more likely they'll flop in whatever role they get given.

If anything, Mikey is going to be the easiest to come back as that he didn't stand out from the group and probably shouldn't have any problem with moving into another "goofy" character.

Ken will have big problems as he was the most vocal and pushed member of that group. He might need to just go on SD or ECW instead where he's less known to the fanbase.

I don't think Ken Doane will have that much trouble getting over the Spirit Squad debacle. He was the leader of the group, so he was always presented as being stronger than the rest. Plus he was looking to break away from them for a while anyway, as he was sick of their incompetence. Seems like he was kept above most of the mess.

I'm not saying he should be brought back right away. I think the perfect time to call him back up would be the night after WM, which is when a lot of new storylines begin anyway. In the meantime, he could work on his new character.

A lot of Philly reacted when DX put that sticker on. I don't think the audience is as ignorant as you guys think it is.

Shawn should have wrote Mr. Gunn or Mr. James, that would have been great.

For Ken to get over in the future, they have to make as little mention as possible of him being in the Spirit Squad or even ignore it entirely. Reminding people of it would make no sense.

Philly is a notoriously 'smart' crowd. They'd get that joke more than any other area.

I think Kenny was generally presented as being better than the rest of the Spirit Squad. He was basically the only one to have his own finisher, he did most of the talking, JR acknowledged him as being the leader, etc. I think as long as DX isn't allowed to constantly bash him in promos for being a former Spirit Squad guy, and he's put over in a credible fashion, he'll have no problem getting over. I mean, guys have risen from having stupid gimmicks before.

All they'd really have to do is call him "Ken Doane" and give him new ring attire along with a theme music, and let him beat guys decisively. He can talk and wrestle, which is about 90% of the equation right there.

As someone from Louisville it's hard for me to separate the notion of OVW as a local fed from the idea that people around the country don't know what it is. I think it's been around long enough and referred to enough that most fans kinda know OVW is a minor league fed.

The biggest mistake for these guys in the Spirit Squad is that they actually pushed this lame gimmick. If they did this goofy schtick for a couple of months and then veered into different directions they would have been fine. But they actually pushed them into a spot vs. DX that nobody bought them in, and they got killed. And then kept the tag titles on them entirely too long, then kept the group going far past anyone's tolerance.

P.S. They were in Pittsburgh for RAW.

The point remains That joke would not have gotten the reaction it did in just about any other place.

Bah, they would've gotten it in Chicago, Milwaukee, Atlanta, or just about any other major US city. Pennsylvania and the northeast don't have the market on "smarkness" cornered. We have the internet and newsletters here in the Midwest, too.

Raw wasn't in Philly last night, it was in Pittsburgh. Although we may have sucky live crowds, we make up for it by being "smart".

Sometimes I hate going to live shows........I've been to a ton of shows and it seems the entire crowd is full of complete dipshits.

I remember seeing Brock Lesnar doing a dark match on a Smackdown I went to and this guy in front of me telling his friends "look at this big piece of shit, who's this guy get him out of here he sucks" and I was just laughing thinking "this is the WWE's next big pushed guy and most of the crowd has no clue who he is"

I've only been to one live show. That was RAW in June 2003...right in the middle of Austin bashing Storm for his lack of pizazz.

A guy next to me knew what was going on. He was an older guy who was into the Von Erich's etc. and knew what he was watching. I actually got to be smart for a bit as I pointed out Paul London (in a dark match) and mentioned the HBK connection and so forth. The people behind me....they were dense to the point that that's all I can remember about them.

I've been to one show earlier this year, and all I can remember about the crowd is that the guy behind me was chanting for Edge with me, and the guy next to me kept calling Matt Striker and Randy Orton faggots and other gay slurs in front of his son. If there was anybody else not cheering for Cena and DX, I couldn't hear them.

That was my big problem.

They didn't need to bin the gimmick, it was the perfect set-up to establish Kenny or even Johnny as a singles wrestler by breaking away from the group. Now though, they're dead and buried forever. 24 hours after they had them beat down Ric Flair on one of the marquee shows of the year, no less.

The chances of them ignoring it entirely if and when they bring any of them back is somewhere between slim and none. Say they bring back Doane? He gets the push, wins some matches, maybe gains popularity, then he bumps into HHH and gets the "hey, you look familiar, didn't I beat your ass 1000 times last year) shoot comment treatment. Or, they put him on Smackdown, where you know JBL would bring it up as a throwaway comment. Or ECW, where Joey or Tazz would. Let's face it, Doane is done. They all are.

The only way back I can see is to bring someone like Johnny back under a mask, give him a run in the Cruiser Division. But then on the flipside you've got the 'nobody else should have a mask as it takes away from Mysterio's aura' arguement that Ultimo Dragon got meaning that's a non-starter.

I'm not a giant TNA fan, don't get me wrong. But for all the talk of terrible booking of Genesis, I don't think it compares to the botching of Survivor Series and then the inane booking of RAW, where everything besides Victoria winning the battle royal was completely the wrong move.

Kenny would hardly be the first guy buried by a company and able to come back and make something of himself.

Let's not call Ken Doane, The Red Rooster 2.0, just yet.

A few years back, TBS was jobbing left and right to people like Jeff Hardy, reduced to being bit comedy character with Billy Gunn and Spike and generally put over as worthless. A looking booking and a heavy push, he was a star and people forgot about that period of time.

Not to be picky, because I hope you're right. But Big Show was already established and a former World Champion by that point. This was Doane's first shot and he's been grouped in with the other four and the gimmick as 'worthless'. Show didn't really hit the depths that Spirit Squad did either.
