I would assume Cal is short for Calico, some type of gun or bullet or some shit like that.

How can you tell his hand was open? Like I said, it was so fast I couldn't even tell. Maybe it was a slap, maybe it wasn't, I don't really care, but I really couldn't tell.

 

It sounds like a punch to me, that's what punches sound like when you hit someone hard.

I know this is terribly late, but I read this thread and I just wanted to say that "Cal" is most likely short for "caliber." It's still a dumb slang term, though.
