Planning a surprse trip for 5th anniversary with fiancee. Anyone been to Vegas? I'd love to have any tips you can offer. Looking at staying at the Stratosphere. Any help is appreciated.

I stayed at the Stratosphere the last time I was in Vegas. It's pretty good value for money. You will need a car, though -- the Strat isn't within walking distance of anything, and it's also on the fringe of the seedier part of town. Top Of The World restaurant at the top of the Stratosphere tower is excellent.

 

If you're looking for a show to see, I'd recommend one of the Cirque du Soleil shows. I think there are five different Cirque shows in Vegas now.

Just got back from Vegas yesterday actually and it was awesome. Blue Man Group was easily the best show. Gambling didn't go too well but I didn't lose that much. Some of the bonuses they offer for poker are crazy. One place had a payout if pocket aces lost, no matter what the hand was that beat them.

Yeah, I won like 5,000 bucks, and when I tried to leave they took the money back. Some rule about it "STAYING IN VEGAS."

I too went to the Nitro Grill, It was pretty cool, I got some cool camcorder footage of it.

 

anyhow Vegas pretty much sucks now I last went in november 05 right before my move to NY. Everything is expensive and theres way too many people there. so basically youre better off with a shorter stay (like 2 or 3 days) and if you dont realy gamble or drink (like me) theres nothing to do but sightsee.

 

then again im probably the only 21 plus year old who goes to vegas and plays in arcades

I liked going to Vegas this summer, but getting around the strip kind of sucks. Public transportation and cabs are fairly expensive, and the foot traffic is crazy. It seems like it takes half an hour to walk three city blocks (well, everything is huge there). The other annoyance is that people seem to _constantly_ be hitting you up for stuff (sign up for this tour, come see this timeshare development, get a hooker, buy this souvenir, etc). I heard you can rent a car for under 20 bucks a day, but I can't imagine trying to drive around in that traffic, and then trying to find a parking spot.

 

One trick I learned (well, a lot of people probably know it) is that you can sit at the bar in a lot of the casinos, put maybe five dollars in the machine, and sit there for a long time and get free drinks, as long as you're still technically playing the machine. Nice way to get buzzed for cheap.

 

Oh, I like the fact that you can have an open intoxicant on the street,too. I also ate at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville and got two free margaritas just for buying one, but I think the bartender liked us.

When I went to Vegas, I went to the Stratusphere for a show and got a free buffet (they give them out in practically every hotel there it seems) and lets just say that after 10 minutes, I realized just how unsanitary the cafeteria was and I certainly wouldn't stay there.

 

I stayed at the Monte Carlo this past July, had a blast...but yes, everyone will try to come up to you in the street and ask you for SOMETHING...

I was in Vegas roughly ten minutes before my buddy's uncle ordered us up a pitcher of margaritas. The rest of the weekend is somewhat blurry, but I assume that I had fun.

I watched a special on how Vegas is basically turning into a nightclub/resort city, and it is becoming less about gambling and more about partying. I guess they see the money in the 18-35 market, and figure a lot of them would rather drink and party and go clubbing over gambling. I have never been much for gambling, so it is sort of good, but then again the special also pointed out that a lot of the specials and free-bees are going away because a lot of that stuff was offered because you were losing all your money gambling, so if you aren't losing money there is no incentive to give away free stuff......

So, I booked my trip, and took Dames' Advice. Staying 4 nights at the Harrah's on the strip plus round trip airfare from Gary-Chicago Airport ended up at 795.25. Not too shabby me thinks. Now the fun part, if anyone has gone...what do we HAVE to see?

Obviously you gotta hit the Strip...you'll be kind of in the middle with Harrah's - next to Bellagio, Caesar's Palace, Wynn and the Flamingo. Bellagio has the water show every ten minutes, T.I.'s pirate show runs every hour or so. I like the southern end of the Strip with MGM Grand, NY/NY, Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay. There's Stratosphere if you want to go on "the world's highest roller coaster". Downtown has the Fremont Street Experience...basically it's a pedestrian mall that has live entertainment.

Check websites and see who's headlining...my brother and I were able to see David Copperfield at the MGM Grand last time we went. Most of the casinos also have some kind of show going on.

If you like nature Red Rock Canyon is about an hour or so (not sure) from Las Vegas, and Lake Mead is also about an hour or two away. There's also aerial tours of the Grand Canyon that get advertised at welcome centers.

If you like nature Red Rock Canyon is about an hour or so (not sure) from Las Vegas, and Lake Mead is also about an hour or two away. There's also aerial tours of the Grand Canyon that get advertised at welcome centers.

Red Rock Canyon is actually pretty close -- just drive straight west and it's just past the city limits. Valley of Fire is another nice park to visit, about an hour or so north of town.

 

Balloon tours over Red Rock are pretty cool.
