k thx Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 I got 1 kg of yams (sweet potatoes for those outside North America) free with my shopping. What's the best thing to do with them? I dont know even know where to start...
The Amazing Rando Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 Yams are NOT sweet potatoes. Yams are white on the inside, sweet potatoes are an orange color.
k thx Posted January 14, 2007 Author Report Posted January 14, 2007 Yeah, I thought it was a grey area in the states with you guys calling sweet potatoes "yams". If not, disregard.
The Amazing Rando Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 Either way, I have no idea what to do with yams, because I think they taste god awful.
the max Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Yams = Boniatos Boniato Casserole 6 medium boniatos, cooked 2 tablespoons margarine 1 cup raisins 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup chopped nuts 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/3 cup sugar, or less to taste 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 cup corn syrup, or less to taste 1/4 teaspoon allspice 1 lemon, juiced 1/4 teaspoon salt Slice boniatos, and line greased baking dish with 1 layer of boniatos. Sprinkle over half the nuts and raisins. Put remaining sliced boniatos on top, adding another layer of nuts and raisins. Dot with margarine, pour over syrup, sprinkle on sugar and spices, add lemon juice and vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 45 minutes.
Wyld Cannon Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Yams ARE sweet potatoes. The white flesh type are the Boniatos. Make french fries.
v.2 Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Slice them, bake them a three fifty topped with brown sugar syrup.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Donate them to a local food drive. Most food banks wont take fresh produce..hence why they ask for non-perishable food items. For yams/sweet potatoes.. Bake em Peel em Mash em Add brown sugar/butter/cinnamon/marshmallows bake em eat em simple as that.
Big Ol' Smitty Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Boil' em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew.

I was gonna say thats a big can, like 46 oz can..but they do come in that size so I guess its possible. Plenty of Beta Carrotene in yams..more than in a carrot I think..
Guest Vitamin X Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 I got 1 kg of yams (sweet potatoes for those outside North America) free with my shopping. I was gonna say thats a big can, like 40 oz can 1 kilogram = 35.2739619 ounces Math is great! (Google doing it for me is even better)
Guest "Go, Mordecai!" Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 I wish the English would just use the English system. Fuck metric.

The closest can size is a #3 that holds 33 oz and a #3 Cylinder Can that holds 46 oz. Yay for Storeroom Operations Class!
Guest Vitamin X Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 So then, he probably got the 33oz can. Why is this even being discussed? I am not going to degrade myself into talking about the size of cans for yams.
Special K Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Yams are really gross. I can stomach them cooked like mashers, but top them with marshmallows? Blarch.
Guest Legalise Drugs and Murder Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 I wish the English would just use the English system. Fuck metric. No way, man. Metric is beautiful. It took years of chemistry, but I can think in terms of metric as opposed to going "How many pounds is that?" every time.
