The OAO ECW Thread for 1/23/07

Recommended Posts

Making it an extreme rules, seems to be a given. It really should have ended with these two brawling through the crowd into the back and into the streets.

They haven't done that sort of thing in awhile and it was rather commonplace not just in WWE but in wrestling as a whole but instead they made no reason to care about the match.

I get that Test is Holly to Lashley's Lesnar but even that one bothered to make Holly look to have a fighting shot or give a reason to care.

The problem with making it a extreme rules match is that it'd be diluted given that the LMS will be booked harder and more brutal.

That did not make any booking sense to me as Test got pinned clean, after that Hardcore Holly promo I expected Holly to interfere and get inserted into the Rumble title match. Maybe some worries from the office that the match was going to suck and they wanted to get them some ring time in front of a live tv crowd?

You think the WWE cares about putting a bad match on PPV?

Well supposedly Vince bitched out everyone backstage after New Year's Revolution because he thought it sucked so maybe they are putting a little extra effort into this one.

That's hilarious......I was there and everyone in the crowd ate up the show, I even didn't think it was a horrible show.

Strikers impressions have him dressing seperately by himself, usually in a hallway somewhere. I think he was "doing" Owen Hart and Benoit, Holly and Eddy Guerrero got pissed off and threw him out of the dressing room.

It wasn't Striker doing impressions that got him heat. He was first on Raw, and got heat there though I don't know why. When he went to Smackdown, to tape stuff for WWE.com and do a dark match, he said something that got back to JBL that for some reason had JBL all fired up and when he was told to try and defuse the situation he said something else that saw Bob Holly tell Striker he had 24 hours to learn how to fight. Apparently, Striker said something to the effect of that even though he was sent to Atlanta he was able to talk his way out of it by telling DeMott and Jody Hamilton that he had business to take care of in New York. He was trying to be smart but it wound up with people hating him even more. What set Guerrero off on him is when Striker was asked what he was doing on Smackdown, Striker joked back with something like "just taking their money", which didn't sit too well and when Guerrero told Striker he needed to smarten up Striker again tried to be funny and it backfired in a big way because Guerrero got mad at Striker and walked off, and when Benoit found out what Striker had done, which he felt was disrespecting Guerrero, he threw Striker's bags out of the locker room and told him to dress somewhere else.

Since I didn't work up the nerve to watch this entire show, will someone run down the results in full? I did see the main event and was that ever a bizarre match....jobbing the heel out clean before the PPV. That's a new booking technique.

Who did Punk piss off to get jobbed out like this?

The entire back because he was making out with his "fine ass girl".

Edit: I'm shocked how much time they are giving this match.

did Hunter get heat like this when He was dating Stephanie..or shawn when him and Sunny were messing around..Or Carlito and Torrie...

Well when Edge fucked Lita.......they fired Matt Hardy....go figure!?! Of course Vince did use the affair to make Edge/Lita an on-air couple......

Decent show tonight.

Ariel looking good as usual. The battle royal was about as good as a five man BR on a one hour show can be, but really there were other guys in the back probably that they could have used, or at least had it go longer, and have a shorter expose(or not have one at all).

CM Punk vs. Burke was pretty good and it was nice that they resisted the predictable finish of DQ via Striker interference. Does anyone else think maybe Styles and Strikers got yelled at during the match from someone in the back? At the beginning of the match, both were jawing back and forth with remarks, pretty funny stuff, and then all of the sudden they were both quiet and Striker hardly ever spoke the rest of the match. Weird.

The Main Event was well, what we all expected. I was really hoping RVD would interfere, making it a Three-way at the Rumble, because I don't see the fans being into Lashley or Test at all, and even if RVD jobbed, at least the crowd would be somewhat into it because RVD was involved.

I am not sure why they even had this match tonight. Seems there were other options they could have gone with.

The show was alright, here are my thoughts...

The mini battle royal should have went longer. It was intresting how Sandman, RVD, Sabu, and Tommy Dreamer were in there....then there was Kevin Thorn. Sabu/Sandman/and Dreamer all went out to quickly. Doesn't really help make them look like threats for the Rumble match, espically Sabu since he pulled the Mil Mascara's spot and got himself elimated. The match did however put over Thorn (which is something that needed to be done) and RVD (which is also something that needed to be done.) and it also put RVD as the guy from ECW who is the biggest threat in the Rumble...which doesn't mean much I know, but WWE is promoting one guy from each show to be the top threat in the Rumble, and RVD is ECW's main guy.

Kelly's dance thingy......I actually wanted Shannon Moore to have a match. Thats how much I hated this and why didn't Striker interrupt the dancing? It would have made sense if Striker interrupted Kelly's dance thing because Kelly pretty much cost him his match against Punk last week, Striker could have came out, ran Kelly/Layla/and Brooke(? Is it Brooke?) off after cutting a heel promo, joined Tazz and Joey at the annouce table for the Punk vs Burke match, ECW could have went to commerical and then go from there. Why something like that didn't happen is beyond me.

Oh and this was great....

Striker to Tazz: Why don't you wear any of the tie's I give you on tv?

Tazz to Striker: Cause they're ugly and I hate them

CM Punk vs Burke: It was a decent, long match that put both guys over. It works for me.

Test vs Lashley: So ummm whats the point of the title match if we know Lashley can beat Test clean? Is there a point to the match now? Nope, somebody fucked this up. Great job and I was actually looking somewhat forward to it. I mean weather you want to admit it or not, Test has been doing damn fine as the top heel for ECW and hey he actually looked like a threat agasint Lashely...now...now he looks like shit. Thumbs up to the guy who booked that shit.

So the only bad parts of tonights show, Kelly's new dance group, Test vs Lashley going to shit, and the battle royal is 50/50. So it was an alright show for me.

So...why's Tazz burying every commentator that sits next to him? Can't he just call the match as normal instead of turning it into "Well, new commentator, you're wrong and stupid, I'm clearly superior and here's why!"

Maybe the writers watched RAW and realized in WWE, you aren't supposed to have strong heels, so they made sure to have Test job clean before the Rumble.

Not sure what in that story makes it seem like he was mouthing off. To me it reads like he was trying to joke around to lighten the mood. Maybe he did mouth off, who knows. But I'm not sure where you gather he mouthed off based solely on that story.

For what it's worth, Striker had a rep for being a heat magnet before going to WWE. Most people who knew him beforehand felt it was just a matter of time before he got into hot water. I think what got him heat was that he was a new guy in the locker room and he probably should have kept his head down and his mouth shut before trying to be funny or cute.

Well, yeah, I think that's it. There's a time and a place for being funny and cutting up, but when you're the new guy in a place that's known for being hard on newcomers, you shut up and wait 'til you've earned the chance to joke around.

I enjoyed the ECW show up until the last match. I couldn't stop watching it...it was like one of those awful train-wreck YouTube videos that you know is ending badly but the horror is so powerful I couldn't change the channel. Lashley destroys Test. Easily. So the PPV match is worth what now?

I enjoy watching Burke and Punk in action. Striker was great as well. If Punk's going to get stuck in a midcard feud, these guys could at least work with him to put together some really great matches if the booking isn't all buggered up.

That music for "The Alpha Male" screams for some character more like "The Ladies' Man" from SNL. Even Tony Atlas' theme for his Saba Simba character would be better. Or even Sable's old theme. Gawd. Look, I wouldn't mind the armbar submission as an alternate finisher, but they really need to build up the Pounce as his main finisher. They're having everybody sell it like madmen. Why is that not a finisher? I realize they want to differentiate the new Alpha Male from the old, but that armbar would be more worthy of someone who could actually wrestle...I'd expect to see some serious old-schooler use it, not a guy whose character is supposed to be a vicious mauler of a wrestler. Next I expect Test will unveil his new finisher, the spinning toe hold. Yeesh. The moves need to match the character to make some sense. The Alpha Male using an armbar makes as much sense as Bret Hart using the Khali "Brain Chop."

damnit I hardly ever watch ECW, and now they have Leyla on there. Am I the only guy who thinks she's incredibly hot?

I find her alright but she is one horrible dancer.

So is Joey Styles actually calling wrestling matches now? Or did they forget all about that promo?

No. Awhile back Meltzer reported that Vince's displeasure with Styles "calling the matches" continued, even into the new ECW, so Styles just said "fuck it" and decided to do play by play the way Vince wanted....

To be fair, I think the cameras or a camera that was close by just picked his voice up.

The fault lies with Thorne. You don't call spots when your opponent is half way across the ring and you have to raise your voice so you can be heard.

And 1.5 was the rating.

I've noticed Thorne does this a lot... you can't beat the match he had with CM Punk. He puts him in the Boston Crab, and then about 20 seconds later all you hear is "GRAB THE ROPES!"

To a point, yeah your right, but if you need to be clear on something, its best to do it as soon as you can so the finish isn't all fucked up. But as KOAB posted, maybe Thorne gets lost or forgets something a lot and calls out spots to damn loudly or at the wrong...a lot.

Here's RVD at an E3 convention doing an interview. Man, if WWE would just let him be himself for promos. He comes off so much more natural here..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWnxJfxV4vc

Here's RVD on Off the Record Part 1 with Michael Landsburg....RVD on Off the Record!!!

Part 2

Part 3

Oh and how about:

Rob Zakowski vs. Zuboo from 1991 NEWF(before they were "extreme")

Part 1

Part 2

The tape from inside the police car of RVD getting pulled over and busted for speeding and pot...

Dude...I so thought it was 65mph...

I don't know about anybody else, but they REALLY need to bring back the TV Title to ECW to give the mid-carders something to do. the only feud thats goes on in ECW are the World Title feuds while the rest of the roster are just there. a CM Punk/Monty Brown feud over the TV Title could be really fun to see and would make ECW a little more entertaining IMO.

This is obviously all CM Punk's fault. Maybe if he knew how to work Thorne wouldn't have to scream out spots to him. Thorne was carrying the match if he was calling the spots. If Punk would stop making out with his girlfriend and start paying attention he would learn how to work and maybe even get over some day.
