Ripper 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2007 he just needs a coach that can play to his strengths rather than try to change him into what THEY want. You have a run first QB? start creating those sorta plays. This new guy is talking about wanting 65% passing completion per game...that's not Vick's strengths so why force it? Because they want him as healthy as long as he can. Smashing himself up against big defenders every play will shorten his career. The coaches aren't thinking of "How can I thrill the fans", they want to win, and Vick, while not a great passing QB, is passable enough that they have to protect his health so he can try to give them that. See, this is a misconception. He isn't a run first QB. Remember last year when he went on the stretch where he had really high passer ratings, was passing for over 250 and 300 yards and the Falcons were winning and he had like 10-20 rushing yards a game? You know why? 3 starters on the offensive line got hurt. so they had to take their big, pass blocking second string offensive line (the one that played with Matt Shaub in the preseason because he wasn't mobile) and he got time, didn't run and passed the ball in the upper 60 percents. As soon as the 3 offensive linemen got back in, they went right back to that Zone blocking that would leave rusher completely untouched and he would have to take off. If anything he doesn't take off enough. He got sacked alot times from avoiding the first rusher and staying back there looking for someone to pass two only to get hit by a second and third rusher. I challege people to find a falcons game from last year and see what is really happening and not just the boxscore after the game. The coaching and their schemes were seriously inept. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted March 30, 2007 And Farves record over his last 4 years to vicks. I'm fairly sure Favre has the edge there, even if it's at .500 for the past four years. I can look at the Packers' record and they went 10-6 for two seasons, then 4-12 (ugh), and 8-8 last year, obviously since Favre hasn't missed a game that'd be his record, but the Falcons have gone 7-9, 8-8, 11-5, and 5-11 the past four seasons. That 5-11 year was the one where Vick got Madden'd, so if you wanted to extend it to five years, Green Bay went 12-4 and then choked in traditional Sherman style at home to the 9-6-1 Falcons. His record is not better than Favre's.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2007 Ripper, any more word on what exactly Petrino wants to see from the offense besides a 65% passing Vick?
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2007 I do see your point about the health issue, but I think trying to make him more of a passer is just setting yourself up for failure...but hey, who knows? Maybe Vick can really work hard at it prior to the season and we'll see something different this year?
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted March 30, 2007 That's what they've been saying the last couple seasons.
Guest Tzar Lysergic Report post Posted March 30, 2007 McNabb makes five obvious picks. Forgot about him. Vick can run like a deer. Get some big fat fuckers in front of him to eat blocks and let him leave the defense in the dust. He seems like the simplest player in the league to design an offense around. Add in a really good play action setup, lots of bootlegs and shit. He's arguably the best pure athlete in the league, restricting that is foolish.
Ripper 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2007 Ripper, any more word on what exactly Petrino wants to see from the offense besides a 65% passing Vick? He wanted to get rid of that pussy ass offensive line and get a real one, which they have already started to do but they are hurt by the fact that Rich Mckay extended the contracts of almost all of the sucky ones last year thus cap space is pretty much gone. He wanted to get a real bruiser at the fullback instead of a guy like Justin Griffith(who I liked honestly). Plus he is looking forward to working Brian Finnerman and Joe Horn into the offense. Finnerman Horn and Crumpler should make for a good recieving tandem although I would hope they add a actual deep threat in that group (horn is getting up there). There isn't much that really needed to be done with the Falcons besides fire that horrible coaching staff. When you have a offensive coordinator that is so stubborn to think that if he calls a play it should work no matter what the defense shows and doesn't even have audibles to check to if it is obvoius that the play isn't going to work, you are doomed to fail. He really seems like he doesn't plan on making many changes. Although I do worry about his saying that he will incorporate plays to make use of Vicks running ability. Vicks best coach, Dan Reeves, didn't have designed running plays for him (well a few). If he ran it was because he checked down, or saw a lane. And since he was such a dangerous passer under Reeves, teams couldn't afford to leave a spy out there. And vita, when I was saying the last 4 years, I mean the 4 years that Vick actually started. Once again, this will be his 5th year as starting QB. His first 4 have been pretty sucessful but people still rag on him because he was severly overrated his first year starting, now he is being unjustly bashed.
