Ripper Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 I don't think it's fair to call Newt a racist, but yeah, it was a pretty brutally bad choice of words. ... why not?
snuffbox Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 "Hating non-whites isn't racism, it's conservatism"
Dobbs 3K Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Well, I can't speak for the man, but some of the things he's said since leaving Congress have made him seem much more moderate than the Newt most of us remember from the Clinton years. I recall him talking about education in this country and the need for all children to have access to computers. Seems like a fairly moderate and progressive stance. He didn't say "Well, we need our white kids to have PCs so that we can keep the blacks and Hispanics in the ghetto". Wanting a common language and opposing illegal immigration doesn't equal racism, but none of you want to believe that, as I've reitterated that point ad nauseum.
Ripper Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 I never said Newt had a problem with blacks. His history says otherwise honestly. Its is possible to be racist without black people being involved at all...shocking I know. But if I you are at work and ask someone "Hey, do you speak Spanish" and they respond by saying "No, I'm not from the ghetto." there is a very good liklihood people will say its okay. Its a racist statement. I don't see how you can make that sentence anything but a racist statement. People keep focusing on the "English the this countries language part" (which is fair and correct) and not the fact that he tacked on a extremely racist statement at the end. A bad choice of words and outright racist statments are two completely different things.
Big Ol' Smitty Posted April 11, 2007 Author Report Posted April 11, 2007 It’s the same thing as I say in my book, that the Nazis used. When you use the big lie in order to gain and maintain power, it is immoral and it is outrageous… It’s the same process. It’s the same criminalization of politics. it’s the same oppression of people. It’s the same destroy people in order to gain power. It may be six million Jews. it may be indicting somebody on laws that don’t exist. But, it’s the same philosophy and it’s the same world view. Tom Delay again, expanding on the quote that started the thread (on his campaign finance violation charges)
