"No-skip" Albums

Recommended Posts

You know those albums, the ones that once you listen to the first track, you're hooked until the album is over.... or if you have an MP3 player, you take it off of shuffle to hear it all the way through.

Here are mine (and yes, I know I am stuck in the 80s and early 90s. Deal.):

Iron Maiden - Powerslave

Joe Satriani - The Extremist

Ozzy Osbourne - The Ultimate Sin

Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power

Dream Theater - Images and Words

Whitesnake - Whitesnake

Dokken - Back for the Attack

Van Halen - Fair Warning

Stuart Hamm - Kings of Sleep

Rush - Moving Pictures, Signals

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime

Metallica - Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Kill 'em All

Megadeth: Youthanasia

Guns 'N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction

Faith No More - The Real Thing

John Williams - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Soundtrack

Post yours, and discuss.

And, as an "honorable mention," the albums I listen to the most that I don't like every song:

Jon B - Stronger Everyday: The first half of the album is great; the second half is garbage.

LL Cool J - Phenomenon: I literally like every other song.

Jamiroquai - A Funk Odyssey: I love the first three tracks and the last two, and can't stand the five in between.

Do "Best of" collections count?

having 3600 songs or so in my collection means that I am hitting shuffle a lot... but especially when I am on my route, I hear one song and then I have to hear the whole album.

Thanks for the Digital Underground love, Slim... now I need to get that album...

I like the title track. Musically the Smiths have many better songs, but contained within is one of Morrissey's deepest cutting and most poetic lyrics.

I would've fit in well back when vinyl reigned supreme. Can you imagine having to get up, lift the needle and place it back down accurately on the right groove every time you wanted to skip a track? Preposterous.

The Headmaster Ritual

Rusholme Ruffians

I Want The One I Can't Have

What She Said

That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

How Soon Is Now

Nowhere Fast

Well I Wonder

Barbarism Begins At Home

Meat Is Murder

I love 'Nowhere Fast' but I always skip 'How Soon is Now' and 'That Joke...' is really too long. Title track is probably when my patience runs out with the thing. Good album though.

Am I the only one who hasn't hardly heard any album that doesn't have some skip worthy tracks? Pearl Jam's Ten has 3 or 4 songs on it that are mediocre and skippable. Even some of my favorite CDs ever like Nevermind and In Utero have something I skip (Territorial Pissings and Tourette's for instance).

Actually I'll be more elaborate when it comes to Ten. That CD is mostly listenable, but it's sorta like I'll listen to each song and then skip to the next one about midway through.

Like some of the above posters, I'm also the kind that likes to listen to an album all the way through. Thanks to Soulseek, I've become much more appreciative of the album format, provided it's executed well.

I can probably think of a dozen off the top of my head, but the one that stands out to me the most out of my current collection would be The Moody Blues-Days of Future Passed. That's the prime example of an album that just has to be listened to from start to finish, for me.

Yes. 'How Soon is Now?' is great, but maybe because its the longest of the commonly heard Smiths songs I've skipped it a few times. Come to think of it, I haven't listened to a Smiths album through in ages. I'll amend that.

To move things slightly, what's the longest album you never skip? A lot of my 'non-skip' candidates aren't very long, ie Spiderland. Mine's probably tindersticks (2nd).

I never skip a thing on London Calling or Blonde on Blonde.

Am I the only one who hasn't hardly heard any album that doesn't have some skip worthy tracks?

I tend to approach albums in a style completely opposite to that. A single mediocre song often becomes a lot less mediocre when it's part of a cohesive album, and to skip that song disrupts the flow of the whole larger item. I find that's really the case with some artists particular, like Brian Eno or Can.
