Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

Californication by Jacob Pointon

Californication meaning…

Now for years, everyone has always questioned the meaning behind 3 ballads off the Californication album

: Scar Tissue, Otherside, and Californication. Now my debate is one the meaning behind all three songs, since they are the most popular of fans wanting to know the meaning of. It is rather extensive, so I broke the debate in 3 different parts, one for each song. This one is Californication.

While there is some debate as to whether or not the meaning of Californication lies in the generalizations made about the crazy society evolving out on the west coast of the USA, or a more personal accounting of a pre-marital relationship as ranted about for a verse, I am inclined to believe the former. Californication is a biting social criticism of the culture of excess we have. But the song isn't just about how things are in California. In itself, the descriptions in the song hold California up as a symbol itself for wider problems and issues we have. I found an interview from MTV, and Flea pretty much tells you what it’s about. Who better then the writers themselves to give you the meaning:

It's not a sexual reference. "Californication" is really just the act of the world being affected and saturated by the art and the culture being born and raised in California. Traveling around the world, no matter how far I go, I see the affect that California has on the world. It's about that good and bad, beautiful and ugly.

So let's hop to it. I can't promise I'll touch anything, or even get it "right," but it should be fun to try.

First off we have:

Psychic spies from China

Try to steal your mind’s elation

Little girls from Sweden

Dream of silver screen quotations

And if you want these kinds of dreams

It’s Californication

Here we already have a contrast between internal and external. The first half of the verse "Psychic Spies..." though "elation" represent a general paranoia people have of something beyond their control attempting to mess with their lives. The crackpot theories generally can be found in California.

The rest of the verse, "Little girls from Sweden...” is how external people see something part of California is famous for (movie making) and how they dream of being able to enter into this dream world, totally naive and ignorant of the problems those within deal with.

Last two lines let you know. Right off the bat, he's told you what Californication is.

It’s the edge of the world

And all of western civilization

The sun may rise in the East

At least it settles in the final location

It’s understood that Hollywood

sells Californication

Here he's at first talking about how California is the "edge of the world in all of western civilization." Whether or not you find any deeper meaning in or not, it's a powerful enough line. Perhaps, when you link the term "civilization" with a description of the sun rising and setting, you get a metaphor saying that this is where the sun will set; this is the decline of civilization. This theme is again referenced later in the song.

He ends the verse with the phrase, "It’s understood that Hollywood sells Californication" which is simple and obvious enough. Californication as defined above is a paradox between innocent desire for fame and recognition with a culture of irrational fears. This is what Hollywood sells. Everything out of that place will either be entirely self promoting and wrapped in a gaudy brilliance, or will play off your fears in some most unusual ways.

Pay your surgeon very well

To break the spell of aging

Celebrity skin is this your chin?

Or is that war your waging

Simple enough. Here it's talking about how some people are consumed in a war against age, devoting so much of their time, energy, and life into combating it as to nullify any victory they have. Ultimate futility revealed in the form of a question at the end.

Chorus:

First born unicorn

Hard core soft porn

Dream of Californication

Dream of Californication

First born Unicorn is a nice rhyming phrase that holds a major symbol in it. What that symbol is can be confusing, depending on what your take for the general mythological meaning of a Unicorn is. Some say strength and independence, which would then mean perhaps a glimmer of hope in the song talking about defiance to the force of Californication. Others say a fearful, dreadfully powerful creature. It would then be talking about Californication itself, being a firstborn unicorn, our society's first and most dreadful force to effect change upon our world. Also in mythology, the Unicorn represents virginity, and you’re first born a virgin, and because of hardcore and soft porn, you get ideas of sex, have sex, and lose it.

Phrase Hard Core Soft Porn is obviously a contradictory, and I would guess is meant as a jab for the other major marketing technique/aspect of Californication... They sell as much sex as possible, promote it as much as possible, but are never willing to outright go all the way with it, still attempting to uphold that innocent polished image.

Marry me girl be my fairy to the world

Be my very own constellation

A teenage bride with a baby inside

Getting high on information

And buy me a star on the boulevard

It’s Californication

Because he is addressing directly someone in this verse, many people take this as evidence that the song is about a single person who he had a relationship with, perhaps a person who represented this whole culture. I'm still shaky on the grounds, but I think he's just addressing another archetype here, as symbol of the TYPE of person who gets caught up on the whole society, but not an actual person. And seeing how constellations can also determine your fate, he could be saying to this girl to marry him, be the one to take him around the world, and be the one to be his fate. And have you noticed that when young teenage girls get pregnant, they finally wake up and realize they need to get their act and life together. So they start working harder in school, keeping their face in the books, “getting high on information”, so they can make a better living form them and their future family. And who doesn’t want or get a star on the Hollywood Boulevard? A few non Hollywood actors have done so.

Space may be the final frontier

But it’s made in a Hollywood basement

Cobain can you hear the spheres

Singing songs off station to station

And Alderon’s not far away

It’s Californication

In this verse he does three things.

1) He points out the fakeness of our attempts to explore "the final frontier" as we instead do it in a studio as opposed to spending that money to actually do any real exploration. It's also a Star Trek reference, of course, with that phrase. He referenced Hollywood again. He does it one more time in this verse, proving how he is a true geek at heart.

2) a) He directly addresses Cobain, more likely than not Kurt Cobain, the man who kicked off a trend that was consumed, distorted, and then discarded by the force of Californication. He asks if he sees what has happened.

b) Foo Fighters lead singer is the former drummer of Cobain’s Nirvana…..Foo Fighters, not the band, but real foo fighters fly in what looks like alien space crafts; the flying saucer type kind that in early days were called “spheres”……Station to Station is an album by David Bowie, and on that album you’ll find the track “The Man Who Sold The World”. During one of Nirvana’s final performances on MTV Unplugged, they performed that same song. After Cobain’s death and Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighters, they also played “The Man Who Sold The World” at their concerts in memory of Curt Cobain, which then got a lot of air play on the radio, I mean all the time when it first came out. So, do you kind of see the connection? He’s telling Kurt if he can hear how Dave Grohl and his band is still carrying the torch, and how they miss him and still live on his name.

3) And finally, he says, "And Alderon's not far away, It's Californication." This line is actually a Star Wars reference as is apparent in more knowledgeable circles. Sure the spelling is different, but maybe Anthony thought he spelled it right, but I do believe this is what he’s talking about….Planet Alderaan was the pristine home of Princess Leia, the first planet destroyed by the Death Star in the first Star Wars film. This is a major symbol because he is pretty much saying "our perfect world will be destroyed soon, it's Californication" by saying that Alderaan is no far away. Again he's touching upon the destructive nature of this force, a theme I poked earlier on.

Born and raised by those who praise

Control of population everybody’s been there

and I don’t mean on vacation

Everybody's been to this state of control, of being swept up by the force of Californication. As opposed to having gone to California on vacation.

Destruction leads to a very rough road

But it also breeds creation

And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar

They’re just another good vibration

And tidal waves couldn’t save the world

From Californication

Here he's taking the destructive foreshadowing from before, and saying "Yeah, but if you look at it in a certain way, it can be used as a creative energy. You cannot wipe out this force, even if California was wiped off the map." So then, find a way to transform the destructive earthquake of this force into a good vibration. (Also, there's a touch of irony in talking about earthquakes, seeing how California is rocked by them pretty constantly.) The earthquake to a guitar, as much damage as it may cause, to a guitar, is only another vibration... vibration on a guitat makes music. Creation from destruction. Californication is destructive, as he's shown, but again the hope glimmers through; it can be creative.

Pay your surgeon very well

To break the spell of aging

Sicker than the rest

There is no test

But this is what you’re craving

He returns to the waste of energy in the battle against the age, saying that perhaps there is something sick about it. The last line would be by far too ambiguous for me to really throw my opinion on. Are you craving Californication, or are you craving to escape it? We strive to be good people but we always fall back to the ways of evil. We come to the point that that is what we're craving.

What the fuck.

I'm currently doing my dissertation on Los Angeles counterculture, and that was way too much even for me.

OK, this one is about an effing Sash! (of 'encore une foi' fame) song.

I always thought that this song was like "Brave New World" where if you had the chance, would you want a world without any pain or suffering? Even though a world without suffering lacks any real meaning or individuality. What if the world was without love? No love, but also no suffering from Love. Would people want a world like that?

Ok I gotta agree with dannymp3 on most of what he said. It is pretty much about how celebrities sell there souls to get what they want like that. Chad definately puts the lyrics together great, but the whole song is about his views of what most celebrities are like after they make it big, and he puts it together perfectly in this song. however, and i dont mean to burst ur bubble danny, but i dont think that nickelback is really christian rock. but that doesnt stop them from just pointing out all the sin and evil that most celebrities get away with.

fiddy cent's 'In Da Club' (359 comments) gets put in its place

I think this song is an example of how hip-hop has become insanely popular because it's so easy to dance and party and have fun to. That's why it's popular, not because its deep or meaningful, or whatever. I definitely agree and don't consider this music at all. 50 Cent prolly didn't even write these lyrics - that was probably eminem or dr. dre. I am a music purist and I love rock, especially alternative and punk. But I also like hip-hop because of the feeling it gives, of partying, havin fun, etc. That is, I don't like hip-hop because I think it's good music. I like it because it's fun, and when I want to play music (bass player for 7 years biotch), I play quality shit like green day, weezer, etc. Yeah, it doesn't really have a point except for people to party to, I would agree barinchild. And yes, MTV has still been ruined by shit like this because they're bitches of whoever gives them the most money.

The Atari's-Boys of Summer (Eagles Cover)

yeah, I agree....this is a magnificent love song..actually it's probably how good love songs should go because this has many emotions andfeelings expressed. I'm surprised this song gets so little comments compared to all their other songs, even though nearly all their songs are good. It's about a girl this guy likes.....he's bringing back memories with her and telling her how much he missed her and how much they want to spend time together.......good song...it brings me to tears when I heard it the second time though the first time I didn't really payed much attention, my point is this song gets another great hit from the song 'Boys From Summer".

Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz-Get Low

Lando, dpe, VinDigita1 : all you some bitches.... why you gotta be hatin....lil jon is gettin rich from this shit...its whats popular....i have an idea lets make some fuckin shitty music that wont sell and then you fags would have respect for it...fuckin losers... as long as sweat be drippin from these balls and bitches be shakin they monkey ill love this shit.... lil jon got the phattest beats on earth aight im outtie

Puddle of Mudd - Blurry

This song is outstanding !! The lyrics have to be the forte. I've never heard "pre-occupied" used in a song recently (paragraph 1), but it's a wonderful 1-3 sylabble run. Very poetic.

My interpretation of the song is he's on the break with a girl who is doing the breaking. I think she's breaking due to "irreconsilable differences." My only evidence for that last part is the best line in the song: "There's oceans in between us, but that's not very far."

I mean, what a great thought; and perfectly expressed with that line.

Overall, the song is greatly above average, but there are some lyrical diamonds in there that makes the song first-class. I'm sure I'm off though. Any comments ??

This has got to be one of the best songs ever written....That is pretty much all that needs to be said!

this song is like the fucking sickest song i have like eva heard. when u listen to it, it like just drifts u away into your own world.

best song eva

Ya know, I challenge ANYONE to form a band, work their ass off, beat Overwhelming odds, stick to your guns, rely on touring and live shows to win your fan-base, live through losing a band member who's just like family, NEVER give an inch, Live It, Eat It, Sleep It, Breathe It and BE IT for 22 years AND NOT try to get some variety in what you play. Remember, it's ALL about going with your gut and sticking with what's in your heart, and Metallica has done Nothing but exactly that, so everyone who says sell-out, washed-up, has-beens, losers and any of the other unthought crap that seems to get said of these guys, put yourself in their shoes, oh wait, you dont have the Balls to!!!!!!!

"MacArthur Park"

by Muzzikmann on 11-12-2005 @ 01:42:12 AM

I was told that the song had to do with a man and woman who had gone to the park (perhaps had sex there) she got pregnant but died (either during or before childbirth)

The "Cake" is the unborn child" the "green icing" is his envy for never having that child (apparantly she left him and then died??) anyway, he was upset but loved the woman dearly...

I don't think that I can take it cuz it took so long to bake it (takes 9 months to cook that cake!) and because she is gone of course he will never have that recipe again

"mmmBop"

by spacepurin on 08-27-2002 @ 04:03:45 AM

Thank you -=TiedToTheTracks=- for saying exactly what was on my mind (and giving me nothing else to say in my post! lol j/k) I think that this song which made them a house hold name at that time, also is what led to their downfall. I'll be the first to admit, the groups i liked maybe 5 years ago I am even embarassed to admit I even liked, isn't it the same for everyone? Though Hanson really has grown up since the MMMbop days and since most people are too thick in the head to give them another chance, they simply don't.

I've listened to "This Time Around" cd, and I have to say, one of THE best cds out there, if not THE best (well..if Pearl Jam didn't exist they would be but..hell they're way up they're on my list! lol) and it's sad to see that it was a flop, money wise.

It's stupid being tied down to a label they've gotten after 4/5 years, I mean, they've grown so much since then, why do people consistently have to remind them about their past, their past is what made them who they are today.

Whoever says the Hansons look like girls need to GROW UP. Seriously. It's about the music, not the face that's singing it. Would you really listen to something that sounded like 10 cats being strangled in a bag just because the person who's singing it was the most drop dead gorgeous person in the world? For the first couple of times you might, but after a while it just gets old.

This song I admit, I hate and I never listen to, though they have proved themselves respect-worthy on their "This Time Around" cd, and anyone not willing to listen to that cd because of their biased opinion on this song, are ones who won't make it far in life.

Radiohead - "Fake Plastic Trees"

This makes me cry! It's about a girl who's completely fake cause she's having to be someone she's not: "If I could be who you wanted all the time..." Awww :( She can't be herself because she feels the world won't accept her that way, so really she has no idnetity. :(

U2 - "Discotheque"

ITS A SIMPLE SONG ABOUT ECSTASY USE - "YOU KNOW YOUR CHEWING BUBBLEGUM U KNO WHAT IT IS BUT YA STILL WANT SOME - THE "LOVEY DOVEY" STUFF IS AN OLD FORM OF E TABLET CALLED "DOVES" AND ALL E TABS MAKE YOU lOVE EVERYONE AROUND YOU "LOVEY DOVEY STUFF"

Limp Bizkit - "Break Stuff"

Ok....I am an avid Limp Bizkit fan, always have been, always will be. This song is just having one of those fucked up days where if someone looks at you the wrong way, you get the urge to bust them in the face. No, maybe you won't do it, but you fucking feel like it. If you have never had a day like that, then you have been on fucking prozac TOO damn long! So, if you don't like it, don't listen to it, read about it, or acknowledge it is here. Go back too whatever shit you listen to. And when someone downs your favorite band, you will see why I am taking up for Fred and the rest of this kick ass band! They are not trying to be any praticular type of music, they are what they are. And if little kids are singing it, so fucking what, that just means that a song is being played by many different people. You may not like Limp Bizkit, but I think THEY KICK ASS!

T Rex's 'Get It On'

For some reason someone has put these lyrics under the title; 'Bang a Gong', so I s'pose that's why no one's commented... great song!

The song was released as" Bang A Gong (Get It On)" in America because it would not get airplay otherwise

Obviously, SINnocent, you don't know alot about Tatu so let me inform you. They have a very controlling manager who has them do shocking things. For all we know, they are just acting like lesbians. Besides, who said they aren't bi? To make the assumption that they are lesbians shows that you don't know alot about Tatu and that, since you did assume that, you ruled out the possiblity that they are bi, which sounds rather biphobic to me. So let's not call people dumbasses, k?

As for this song, it rocks! I love the lyrics, music, and the image (of the music video.) I can't wait to get my hands on the single. I really hope they make it big in the US and other countries.

Something Corporate - "Konstantine"

Absolute Perfection. The first time I heard this song I was at my boyfriend's house and we had just finished watching slc punk. The ending of that movie left me in tears and we went downstairs and he put on this song. The melody of it and just everything about it made me feel so much. "Beauty" is the only word I can think of to descibe this song

I recommend that you all copy and paste these fine lyrics to a Word document; Size 4 font (Verdana) and print on a 3" x 5" index card.

Keep it in your pocket :)

Good times!

-Matty

This song makes me cry...*emo!* My Ex sent it to me before we went out together, but listening to it now after we went out, alot of what's being said relates to us. Maybe he sent it to me self-consciously knowing that's what we'd up up like?

I know from wikipedia what this song means. It's apparently about the lead singers Ex girlfriend who caught him cheating on her. But she didn't break up with him cause she loved him too much and couldn't live without him. I felt like that about my Ex.

We went through the conversation what would happen if he met someone over the holidays and he said he wasn't sure. That hurt but I knew I couldn't let him go.

"present's just a pleasant interruption to the past" means that what he did is just an interruption in their relationship

"but dammit you're so young

well I don't think I care" I don't know what this means. But to me it means that maybe she was inexperienced some guys find that difficult but despite that he didn't care and wanted to be with her. Maybe that tells us the reason he cheated cause he wanted someone more experienced just for one or two nights, didn't mean he didn't love her.

"I always catch the clock

it's 11:11

and now you want to talk"

This means (I think...) That it's late and then suddenly she wants to talk about what's happening. I can relate I do this often. About an hour before my Ex has to go to bed or something and on msn I ask him something...and he can't give me a straight answer cause he's tired.

I can relate to this song. But for the person he's singing about. I know how she must have felt and I know how he must have felt as I'm close to someone who felt the same way and did the same things, and despite that we still can love through the pain they've caused cause we have to.

Smack That

Tis most certainly not about Homosexuality "I see the one coz SHE be that LADY"..."Way SHE climbs"..."SHE'S like yoo"...now i may be naiive when it comes to songs like this...but the whole concept of the song is that blatantly obvious..even i got it...it's about strippers.. "money no problem, pocket full of that now"...they dont work for free. If it was love..as hottiewitabody suggested..there would be no need for financial reimbursements for sexual favours.

What could possibly be the subject of The Killers' 'Indie Rock and Roll'??

I love this song, but it confuses me.....is he singing about indie rock and roll as if it was a woman? I dont really understand what "talking every word for all the boys" means...can anybody help me figure this out? thanks!!

How to listen to The Beatles:

When you're smoking weed and listening to it, I always change the end part to "I get high with a little help from my friends" and it's pretty cool.

And Godhead covered this one. Both are good.

personally, it relates to me because i am alone and i believe i'll die alone like father mckenzie and eleanor rigby did.

Brilliant analysis on Snoop's "Ain't No Fun"

I think its about passing a ho around to all your friends, cause you don't care about her.

humorous song

This song is about gangbanging. Kind of sodomizing, but it's just such a groovin' tune I can't help but like it. Gotta love those G-Funk beats....

I need to use "Kind of sodomizing" in everyday conversation.

Nothin' But a G-Thang

This is a great example of storytelling. It's like an oral tradition set to the beat. As Homer told the Iliad and Odyssey to speak of the Trojan War, Dr. Dre and Snoop use "Nothing but a G' Thang" to tell a few romanticized stories of the monotony of gangsta life.

I think we can all agree with Snoop's positive message about condom usage when one is about to "dig up a bitch" and reminds us that NO pussy is "good enough to get burnt" while one is up in it. Contrast that lesson in personal responsibility with the nonsensical, ineffective "abstinence only" message preached by idiots.

Sounds like one of my college entrance essays.

Just 2 let u guys know the Nirvana and PJam thing, Kurt Cobain despised Pearl Jam, which is why so many Nirvana heads hate PJam. NEway, today my brother told me what he says in the chorus, and this song is now officially my favorite song lyrically. I'd like to think of it as a kid going crazy and shooting all the popular kids and kids that abused him at his school. DIE ALL YOU MOTHERFUCKERS WHO'S LAUGHING NOW? YEAH TAKE A FUCKING BULLET IN YOUR MOTHERFUCKING HEAD!!! ok ill stop now

We should never let the new generation try to interpret Jeremy.

nopoetic, what makes you think that Green Day don't write 'deep' songs? Look at minority, time of your life? What about them? This song is great to dance to when you're drunk - or sober.

I think this is about teenage boredom.
