Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Draft starts in about a half an hour. I'm work so I won't be catching any of the live tv coverage. Someone want to keep a running update? I thought that the Sox were going to take 6'11' flamethrower Andrew Brackman (NC) with their first pick, but the latest rumor is that he needs Tommy John surgery. Not sure who is at the top of their board now.

Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 That'd be great. I only know about 5-10 players in the draft but you might have a better idea who some of these guys are and why they are getting selected.

They're amateur players and they are getting selected because they want to become professionals.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Funny Al. By the way, SOSH and BP are doing live updates, so don't feel compelled to spend your afternoon writing updates for me.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 This five minutes nonsense is ridiculous.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Yeah, I heard that the first round has never taken more than an hour in the past, but it could go several today because ESPN is going to want to milk each of the five minute periods for analysis. I'm starting to think that tv coverage is a bad development for baseball.
Mik Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 I am enjoying this. I'm very glad with the presentation. I'm only home to let out my puppy but I'm going to record this and watch it later. Very cool.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 So I guess the Royals decided on Moustakas over Vitters. If Porcello really falls all the way to the Yankees, I might break something.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 I don't know who that is, but I'm all for pissing off a Sawx fan.
the pinjockey Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 "I've learned to never question veteran scouting directors." This analyst is worthless. Thanks for going out on a limb, you sir are no Kiper. All I am rooting for is Mesoraco to slip to the Phils. I know nothing about any of these guys, but it sounds like what they need in a legit C prospect (sorry, don't buy Jason Jaramillo at this point).
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 I don't know who that is, but I'm all for pissing off a Sawx fan. He's a prime High School pitching prospect. Kind of like Brien Taylor.
the pinjockey Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 And for the low low price of eleventy billion dollars to sign.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Porcello is all projection right now, but his ceiling is the highest. I've heard many say that he's the best high school pitcher in the draft since Beckett in '99. He's going to cost a fortune, though, and he's dropping because of it (probably to Detroit or NY). Milwaukee took Matt LaPorta, who was draftet by the Red Sox last year but never signed. He may have the most power of anyone, but he can't field a lick.
the pinjockey Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Looks like the highest ceiling position players got swiped out in a hurry. Not thrilled since the Phils need some high level hitting prospects. If it is going to be a pitcher, nut up and take (and sign) Porcello. I'll say a prayer now that they don't take Julio Borbon.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 The Tigers grab Porcello at 27. Like that pitching staff needs another potential ace. Jesus. The Yankees reached and took Andrew Brackman at 30. Like I said earlier, I was worried about the Sox taking him at 55. The injury stuff may have just been a smokescreen to get him to the Yankees. I didn't think he was as good as Bard, who has done nothing in the minors so far.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Early concensus seems to be that Arizona, Atlanta and Texas were the winners of the first round. Matt Harvey, Julio Borbon and Josh Smoker are the biggest names to fall out of the first round. I guess there is a miniscule chance that Harvey could fall to the Sox, which would be about the best possible outcome they could have hoped for.
the pinjockey Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 I'm surprised that neither the Mets or the Red Sox took Harvey in the comp round to make up for not having a first round pick.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Harvey slips to the Sox and... they pass? WTF?
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 Harvey slips to the Sox and... they pass? WTF? If no teams want him at this point, it's him.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Harvey's still there for there second pick... and they go SS. I'm confused.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Baseball Prospectus says that Washington, San Diego and Texas are the early winners after the first/sandwich rounds. Looks like Matt Harvey could plummet down the board to the point that he'll end up going to UNC instead of signing.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Red Sox select Hunter Morris with their third round pick. Morris is a 6'4", 200 lb high school 3B. Has a ton of power, but is raw as hell. Epstein said the other day that they were going with ceiling guys this year now that the farm system is well-stocked. Seems like they are sticking to the plan as the last two picks (Dent and Morris) have all sorts of potential and nothing else. I hope they go after some tough signs later to help balance things.
milliondollarchamp Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Phils selected Travis Mattair from what i read he looks pretty good anyone know anything about him?
the pinjockey Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Houston passed on Harvey, so it looks like he is down to a late round flier who probably won't sign. Have to imagine if someone was willing to pay him by 8/15 he would have been taken by now.
Vern Gagne Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Yeah, I heard that the first round has never taken more than an hour in the past, but it could go several today because ESPN is going to want to milk each of the five minute periods for analysis. I'm starting to think that tv coverage is a bad development for baseball. It is a bad development. They're making it too much like the other drafts, which it's not.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 One thing though is that the draft will likely only go 35-40 rounds. With no more draft and follows, teams are less inclined to take more players.
Cheech Tremendous Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 I don't like the fact that they got rid of draft and follows and I don't much care for compensatory picks for guys who don't sign. Why are they screwing with the draft in the first place?
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 I don't like the fact that they got rid of draft and follows and I don't much care for compensatory picks for guys who don't sign. Why are they screwing with the draft in the first place? In the case of the former, it's mainly eliminating the year long holdouts, a welcome development in my view. The compensation picks are generally a good way for small-market teams to rebuild, and they just simplified the process a tad.
