Women arrested for not watering her lawn

Recommended Posts

Unfuckingbelivable

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6282348.stm

A 70-year-old US woman has been left bruised and bloody after an unexpected clash with police who came to arrest her because her lawn was dry and brown.

Trouble flared when Utah pensioner Betty Perry, 70, refused to give her name to an officer trying to caution her for not watering her lawn.

She says the officer hit her with handcuffs, cutting her nose, although police insist she slipped and fell.

Ms Perry said she was "distraught" after the incident.

He's just trying to cover his tracks, as far as I'm concerned

Betty Perry

She denied that she was resisting arrest, maintaining that she turned to go inside to call her son to fix the confusing dispute.

"I tried to sit down and get away from him," she told Utah newspaper the Daily Herald.

"I don't know what he's doing. I said: 'What are you doing?' And he hit me with those handcuffs in my face," she said.

"He's just trying to cover his tracks, as far as I'm concerned."

Set free

The officer had judged that Ms Perry's "sadly neglected and dying landscape" breached an Orem city guideline and was attempting to issue a formal caution when the 70-year-old was injured.

She was treated in a local hospital for the cut to her nose and for other bruises before being taken to jail.

But she was let go when police realised there were "other ways" of finding out her identity without taking her to jail, a police spokesman said.

The arresting officer has not been named but has been placed on administrative leave, he added.

Ms Perry, who says she has never had a run-in with police in the past, has been offered help by local church leaders to clean up her garden.

"I'm very distraught over all this," she said.

"I can't believe this happened. Do you ever just wish you could start your day over and it would all be different?"

I've heard of fines for watering your lawn during a drought, but I've never heard of being arrested for not watering your lawn. That just seems a little bit silly.

It was slap bang in the middle of America, not in the north or south at all :D

Utah actually. And in Orem, known as FAMILY CITY, USA. Town is coming off more and more like something out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Utah and "The Deep South" aren't synonyms. Although, sad to say, this is my home town and we have lots of weird laws on the books. Maintaining a presentable yard is one of them, but typically is just enforced if you have... garbage all over the place.

Good thing they didn't catch her having sex outside the missionary position. That's a felony.

No. I'm not joking.

It was the deep south to be fair

No, it's about two thousand miles away from the deep south. Utah is basically Mormonland, USA, so they end up with a shitload of weird laws on the books.

Well SLC is fairly liberal, but Orem is intertwined with Provo where BYU is, and the two towns are known as "The Bubble" by people in state because of their almost dogged desire to be naive and look like the most assbackwards culture in the universe.

Provo once held a New Years Eve party a DAY early, because the party would have been on Sunday. Yeah... Provo is freaking fantastic. Have fun on New Years Eve Eve.

You need a geography lesson

Reminds me of when someone on here posted that Nebraska was a Southern state as well. Is it that hard to get the basic gist of where the states in your own country are? Geez.

I thought Vanhalen was over in the UK? I doubt anyone that passionate about soccer (or football) is from the US.

To be fair, if you asked an American poster where to place any English town outside of London, I don't think they'd be able to

Though, to be unfair, I'd look on a fucking map before saying anything

Then again, America is infinitely better.

I don't see how anyone can think "Cumbria" is American.

Van Halen was just trying to insult the South, it's about the only PC target left, region or group of people, so everyone should forgive him. As crazy as this sounds there are ordinances on the books about keeping up property. I'd believe the policeman in this case.

Was she even capable of taking care of the lawn? I mean my grandparents are pushing 80 and still take care of theirs- is she sickly, or handicapped, or something that would prevent her from taking care of the lawn, or was she just lazy?

Outside of that questing, that's just fucking stupid that a cop would beat a woman over this. Kind of reminds me of Florida highway patrollman a few years ago- he had a spotless record, then lost it and beat up a woman who didnt' stop for a few miles. Just a little self restraint is all that's needed.
