Watchmen cast

Recommended Posts

From Sci-fiChannel.com....

Confirming weeks of Internet rumors and reports, The Hollywood Reporter said that Warner Brothers has settled on its cast for Zack Snyder's upcoming Watchmen, based on Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel.

Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Malin Akerman have been cast in the film, which Snyder (300) is directing. Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Deborah Snyder are producing.

Set in an alternate America, Watchmen follows the costumed hero Rorschach, who is living a vigilante lifestyle because most masked heroes have retired or been outlawed. While investigating a murder, Rorschach learns that a former masked-hero colleague has been killed, prompting him to begin investigating a possible conspiracy.

Haley will play Walter Kovacs, aka Rorschach, who ignores the ban on costumed vigilantes.

Crudup will play Dr. Manhattan, a superpowered being with godlike powers and temperament.

Akerman will play Laurie Juspeczyk/the Silk Spectre, who is involved with Dr. Manhattan. Their relationship begins to fall apart as he becomes more disconnected from humanity.

Goode will play Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, a costumed adventurer who retired voluntarily, disclosed his identity and built a large fortune. He hatches a plot to avert a global catastrophe he believes will be caused by Dr. Manhattan.

Wilson will play the Nite-Owl, a crime-fighter who uses technical wizardry and has an owl-shaped flying vehicle.

Morgan will play the Comedian, a cigar-chomping, gun-toting vigilante-turned-paramilitary agent.

Watchmen, created by Moore and Dave Gibbons, is one of the most critically acclaimed series in the genre.

Shooting is set to start in the fall in Vancouver, Canada, with Snyder employing many of the filming techniques he used for his box-office success 300.

I hadn't thought of Billy Crudup for Manhattan, and I'm not sure how I think about it, but if this launches Crudup to being a huge star like Almost Famous should've, then I'm all for it.

Seeing as I have a Watchmen tattoo, I'm obviously very concerned with this, and have been following it.

Comedian is of primary importance, as he's my favorite character. Goode is something of an unknown commodity, but I will give him a chance. He's... not what I expected. Comedian, I think of as olderish (as one of the original Minute Men, he spans a lot of ages in the story, so I pictured somebody sort of in the middle, age wise). And pretty muscular. In my dream cast of Watchmen, I actually picked Jesse Ventura, and I still think that's awesome. But I'll give him a shot.

I really like the Rorschach casting. It's sort of left field, and the guy's unknown enough to not be distracting, but has that sort of ugly intensity to take center stage when he needs to. The cool kid in Bad News Bears, well that's awesome.

Billy Crudup is the "Oh god no." here. I mean... he just doesn't have enough Manhattan in him. Just cause he said he was a golden god doesn't mean he should get to play one. But I will try to remain open minded.

I'm sure I'll comment more later, but I always imagined Nite Owl as Dan Akroyd.

The casting people must've seen SOMETHING in Crudup, cause I admit that it seems like a random-ass casting choice.

And I understand Eckhart not being available for Ozymandias, but I still say Robert Knepper would've been a good choice for Rorschach.

Obviously you didn't read carefully. It would be Jeffrey Dean Morgan playing the Comedian, not Matthew Goode. Morgan would be best known for his guest star shot on Grey's Anatomy as Denny, Katherine Heigl's character's love interest last season.

No, I did not read carefully at all. Yeah, I have no idea who either of them are, but that dude at least looks more like him physically.

I always thought that the voice of Dr. Manhatten should be sved for a guy with a pretty deep voice. For some weird ass reason, I alway's think of Clive Owen's voice for Manhatten when I read the book.

The cast is odd, but I do like Haley for Rorschach and Wilson doesn't seem that bad. He might have to put on a few pounds for the role, though. I saw Goode in The Lookout and he was damn good in that. I don't watch Grey's Anatomy, so I've never seen the Morgan guy. The casting of Jupiter is the one that boggles my mind, though. This Akerman person I've only seen in one movie (Harold and Kumar) and she's only 29. What's interesting is that they might cast Carla Guigino (sp?) as her mom, and she's old enough for the role.

The Comedian is the big one for me, and I heard rumors of Thomas Jane or Gerald Butler for the role. I would've liked either since the Comedian is such a dark role for anybody. I thought Snyder's go-to-guy was Butler, but I guess he has other roles like the Escape From New York remake.

The release date is March 6th, 2009. Sure it will has some weird-ass meaning behind it.

P.S. Jonah Hill for Seymour, damnit!

In his Citizen Kane days, Orson Welles would've indeed made a perfect Osterman.

I hate this whole cast. Rorsharch looks okay, but Crudup is all wrong for Manhatten, and I've not even heard of most of the others. Except that one worthless prettyboy fucker who played Raoul in Phantom.

Guest WhollyChao

I think that Crudup will be a fine Manhattan. He has the acting ability to be as cold and unfeeling and aloof as the character needs to be. Now, what they do with the CGI to create the look is another story altogether.

To be honest, I've never heard of any of the other actors, which I guess is a good thing. It wont be distracting from the characters. The guy who is playing Rorschach looks the part under the hood. It's been eons since I've seen Bad News Bears.

I only saw Phantom of the Opera once and don't remember Raoul especially.

I never thought I'd say this, but I trust Zack Snyder. I don't think he'll bugger it up as bad as others would.

Still think it should have been an HBO miniseries directed by Gilliam, though.
