bob_barron 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 Labour Day weekend is always a dumping ground for movies. Interesting to see what the 4-day estimates show
RedJed 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 Anyone have numbers for how the other Halloween films did the first weekends out? Just curious...... I actually didnt think it would get number one this week, as it just seemed like the film was on such an off release date (Labor Day weekend is tough to release a film, plus of course its not even close to Halloween - it could have and should have been released the first week of October, IMO) but all things considered, I guess pulling in almost 30 million aint too shabby. Consider me surprised. Bomb diggity to Death Sentence - anyone seen that yet? Going to check that out in a few hours here.

King Kamala 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 Not surprised it got #1 considering the usual Labor Day weekend weak batch of movies but I'm surprised that it beat Superbad by how much it did.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 Not surprised it got #1 considering the usual Labor Day weekend weak batch of movies but I'm surprised that it beat Superbad by how much it did. Why's that? I'd understand if SuperBad was in the second weekend of release but this is the third weekend. Balls of Fury probably took some of the crowd (even though it's rental quality at best from the look of it) and then Halloween got the horror fan/Zombie crowd. Shame about Death Sentence, I thought it looked like a halfway decent movie. This has been a rough year for Lionsgate films so far.
King Kamala 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 Well I thought Halloween would get $18-20 mill and Superbad would get somewhere in the $13-15 mill range (which it did). I'm more surprised at how much it made rather than how it beat Superbad (which I expected)
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 I actually feel like Halloween did a lot LESS than I expected. There was a solid buzz around the film about two months ago that just collapsed. Reminds me of the Snakes on a Plane buzz where the film just came out way too late to ride the wave to a huge box office. I still thought it would snag 30-35 million. Poor horror movie season, no competition this weekend, and the other highly promoted new films looked pretty poor.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 Death Sentence was released by Fox Atomic, 20th Century Fox's speciality movie division. It was an alright movie, but didn't really know what message they wanted to send.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 Death Sentence was released by Fox Atomic, 20th Century Fox's speciality movie division. It was an alright movie, but didn't really know what message they wanted to send. Really? I thought it was a LGF? Huh, there must have been a screw up on my cable system and they f'ed up a preview. I thought the message was if someone kills your family, you kill them right back but don't think you are innocent anymore for going above the law to do it? Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2007 I pretty much knew "Halloween" would take the top spot. Too bad it wasn't any good, though at least an R-rated horror movie took the top spot.

Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2007 Bomb diggity to Death Sentence - anyone seen that yet? Going to check that out in a few hours here. It was pretty good for being practically a Death Wish remake. Kevin Bacon was such a badass!
RedJed 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2007 Bomb diggity to Death Sentence - anyone seen that yet? Going to check that out in a few hours here. It was pretty good for being practically a Death Wish remake. Kevin Bacon was such a badass! Yeah, I saw it today - definately thought it was well done. Some heavy dramatics, but to be expected. This was from the same guy who did the first Saw and I have to say, it was pretty impressive, was unsure this guy would apply himself doing a shoot em up/revenge action film, some elements of horror/thriller in here too, though. Solid film.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2007 We have another movie to add to the sub $1,000 club, though this one comes with an asterick- Freshman Orientation, a comedy from Regent Releasing. Plot from imdb: A typical Midwestern 18 year-old freshman at a large state university eager to delve into the college party life, instead discovers that school is not the beer-driven, sexual fantasy of his imagination. Determined to do anything to obtain the girl of his dreams (a gorgeous but reluctant sorority girl), he decides to adopt a gay identity in order to insinuate himself in her life. This casual charade, however, quickly lands him in a morass of campus activism, gender warfare, fraternity hazes, sorority torture, "coming out" narratives, political martyrdom, and ultimately, a university-wide meltdown. http://reelviews.net/movies/f/freshman_orientation.html (a review!) Now I say asterick, b/c over three days it had a PSA of $937. But if you factor in Labour Day, it's $1,317.

The Buzz 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2007 Resurrecting the Champ looked good judging from the trailer I saw, and I'm curious to know if the "bum" is really the boxer he claims to be in the movie since I guess it was based on a true story.
