The College Football Thread 9/13 - 9/15

Recommended Posts

Definately the best week on paper so far. The most interesting battle will be the Notre Dame offense against the Michigan defense. There are no national games on FSN for whatever reason this week.

Also less I forget FIU returning to Miami where this happened last year:

Nebraska gonna get raped

Depends which John Booty shows up. I'm going to be crazy and pick Nebraska with the upset.

Also, Delaware State is ranked? Holy crap, I haven't been paying attention this year to anyone but Delaware. I wonder when the last time both schools found themselves in the top 25 was.

And Kent State is going to kill them.

If Nebraska can't run on Wake Forest, USC's defense is going to murder them. Callahan plays it too close to the vest for Sam Keller to go all aerial, he'll keep going conservative with Marlon Lucky and get nowhere. Also, Purify has too much rust, I don't think he'll be ready in time, but again it's not like Keller will be passing much anyway so...

That makes no sense to me. He comes to Nebraska, intent on changing the option offense to a passing offense. Then when he recruits the players for an open up passing offense, including a transfer quarterback with a good arm, he just up and goes BACK to being more of a ground attack offense.

What the hell was the point of bringing in players built for a spread passing offense if you aren't going to use a spread passing offense?

I think Callahan is scared shitless to go back to the NFL after his last experiment with the Raiders...

Then again, the Raiders ARE the team most likely to pull a Sprewell on their coach.

I dunno...last year they pulled out a couple of trick plays early that got some good yardage and kept them relatively close for about a quarter and a half befor going all conservative again and getting spanked in the 2nd half. I just remember watching it going "STOP RUNNING THE BALL!"

USC is beginning a home and home with Ohio State next year. 2008 game is in LA.

They're also going to Virginia next season. Also, Hawaii starts next year in Gainesville.

"Now, that's what I'm talking about. You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked. You don't come into the OB playing that stuff. You're across the ocean over there. You're across the city. You can't come over to our place talking noise like that. You'll get your BUTT beat. I was about to go down the elevator to get in that thing. I say, why don't they just meet outside in the tunnel after the ball game and get it on some more? You don't come into the OB, baby. We've had a down couple years but you don't come in here talking smack. Not in our house."

As of the end of the 2006 season, the all-time wins for current I-A programs stands as follows-

Team Win % W L T Games played

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Michigan 0.74533 860 282 36 1178

2 Notre Dame 0.74382 821 269 42 1132

3 Texas 0.71756 813 310 33 1156

4 Nebraska 0.70578 810 326 40 1176

5 Ohio State 0.71228 786 302 52 1140

As soon as probably December of this year, Texas can catch Notre Dame for the 2nd most wins of all time in college football.

That's provided that Notre Dame's slide continues and Texas can take care of business.

(This assumes a 3-9 record for the Irish and a 11-2 record for the Longhorns.)

The way things are looking for both programs, though, Texas will certainly catch ND by early next year and then start gaining on Michigan's total.

Anyone wanting to look up their team's all-time record against certain opponents or how they fare on the all-time wins list can go here:

http://football.stassen.com/records/

For example, LSU has a winning record against 8 of the other 11 teams in the SEC.

Their three losing series in the SEC are against West rival Alabama, permanent East rival Florida, and rotating East rival Tennessee.

God, I hate UM. Bunch of fucking braindead rich kids. At least you have to have some semblance of intelligence to get into SC, another rich kid school I loathe. But UM? You've got money, you've got admission!

Just wondering Teke, who do you see Texas losing to this year?

I'm thinking maybe our bowl game and a regular season game.. although, I could see us going back to back losses against K-State and OU..

I originally thought that Texas would beat OU since the Sooners looked like more of a running team and Texas's run defense is much better than their pass defense. However, after watching Bradford throw the ball all over the field against Miami, I'm not seeing it any more. Texas will probably lose to OU and Texas A&M and finish 10-2.

As for OU though, if they beat Texas, I don't see who stops them from going undefeated. They get A&M and Missouri at home and they skip Nebraska altogether. Their toughest road game is at Texas Tech who's only returning 10 starters this year and isn't going to be in contender mode. They even get OSU at home to keep something crazy from happening in the rivalry game. I think with their schedule, the Sooners have a better shot to go undefeated then either USC or LSU.

Iggy,

They still could play Nebraska in the Big 12 title game, which has been the biggest land-mine of all the title games in college football.

Teams like Texas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, etc. have all gone into that game before looking to be bound for the title game and come up short.

By contrast, I think the only big upset in SEC Title Game history was LSU over Tennessee in 2001, which knocked Tennessee out of the title game.

(I'm not just blowing my horn, either. LSU was the only serious underdog to win that game that I can think of, as other "upsets" tended to be of the "#10 Georgia beats #5 LSU" variety, not "unranked LSU beats #2 Tennessee" or "unranked Texas A&M beats #3 Kansas State".)

Or #1 Oklahoma loses to Kansas State in the Big 12 title game and still makes the championship game, only to lose there too as well.

Speaking of the Big 12...

Rivalry gone bad

Longhorns fan nearly castrated in bloody bar scuffle

Posted: Tuesday September 11, 2007 6:57PM; Updated: Tuesday September 11, 2007 7:23PM

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- To some Oklahoma football fans, there are things that just aren't done in the heart of Sooner Nation, and one of them is to walk into a bar wearing a Texas Longhorns T-shirt.

That's exactly what touched off a bloody skirmish that left a Texas-shirt-wearing fan nearly castrated and an Oklahoma fan facing aggravated assault charges that could put him in prison for up to five years.

The shocking case has set off a raging debate in this football-crazed region about the extreme passions behind a bitter rivalry. Some legal observers have even questioned whether this case could ever truly have an impartial jury.

"I've actually heard callers on talk radio say that this guy deserved what he got for wearing a Texas T-shirt into a bar in the middle of Sooner country," said Irven Box, an attorney in this city 20 miles from Oklahoma's campus in Norman.

According to police, 32-year-old Texas fan Brian Christopher Thomas walked into Henry Hudson's Pub on June 17 wearing a Longhorns T-shirt and quickly became the focus of football "trash talk" from another regular, 53-year-old Oklahoma fan Allen Michael Beckett.

Thomas told police that when he decided to leave and went to the bar to pay his tab, Beckett grabbed him in the crotch, pulled him to the ground and wouldn't let go, even as bar patrons tried to break it up. When the two men were separated, Thomas looked down and realized the extent of his injuries.

"He could see both of his testicles hanging on the outside of his body," said Thomas' attorney, Carl Hughes. "He was wearing a pair of white shorts, which made it that much worse."

It took more than 60 stitches to close the wound, and police interviewed Thomas at a nearby hospital emergency room.

Beckett's attorney, Billy Bock, concedes that his client commented about Thomas' shirt, but said it was just good-natured ribbing and that he apologized to Thomas when it appeared to upset the Texas fan. Later, Bock said Thomas approached his client at the bar and threatened him.

"My client is a little man, and this guy [Thomas] is 30 to 40 pounds bigger than him," Bock said. "He's bigger, stronger, younger and probably faster, and he aggressively leaned in and touched my client and threatened to beat him up. ... My guy was defending himself and just took control of the situation."

Thomas' attorney disputes Beckett's version.

"That's total malarkey," Hughes said. "My client never said a word to him. He got up to pay and when he paid and left a tip, the guy grabbed him."

Beckett, a 53-year-old church deacon, federal auditor and former Army combat veteran, has pleaded not guilty. His next court appearance comes Oct. 4, two days before the Sooners and Horns tangle in their annual football game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Thomas, who once lived in Houston and became a Texas fan during the heyday of star running back Earl Campbell, is still recovering from his injuries but has returned to work as a meat cutter at a Sam's Club warehouse store.

Like Beckett and Thomas, many fans of the two college squads never attended either university, but have come to identify so closely with these teams that they attach banners to their cars, wear team colors on game day and even have programmed their car horns to play school fight songs.

Dallas police Sgt. Andy Harvey, a 12-year veteran of the force, said it's not uncommon for fights to break out between fans of the two schools.

"People are passionate about their teams and their universities, and that's a good thing," he said, "but when you mix a real passionate sports fan and then get a little alcohol in there, sometimes it's not a good mix."

On both Texas and Oklahoma fan Web sites, boosters trade familiar tales of having their car tires slashed or windshields smashed for sporting the opposing team's sticker in enemy territory.

Assistant District Attorney Scott Rowland said the rivalry will have no bearing on the way the case is prosecuted.

"It appears that it played a part in the fight," he said, "but that won't play any more of a role in our handling of the case than would a fight over a girl or a car or a song on the jukebox."

Promised myself I was just going to read the thread and not bitch about whatever I don't like this week about college football, but seriously, what the fuck. That's Damaramu in thirty years, I bet, but at least he went to the fuckin' school.

Do people in Canada kill each other over arguments concerning the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Sudbury Wolves? Serious Q.

I meant that he might end up doing that in thirty years, given the ages mentioned. Good for him, though.

You're right about soccer being worse, Slayer, but--not that this mitigates things in the least--I can see how people would be prone to rioting with the World Cup, where there's so much national pride on such a large stage, but this is just the NFL's feeder system. Ease up. Shit doesn't matter.

Czech, Big 12 football isn't just a "feeder" system to the fans there. Is there a NFL franchise in Oklahoma? No. So to them, the Sooners IS football. It's like that throughout the South. In fact, outside the Cowboys, there are more fans that are loyal to college football than pro football.

But that is what it is. If college football is all that matters to so much of the country, why does it cost the networks over three billion dollars for the rights to the NFL? Would be it even more if they did care?
