The College Football Thread 9/13 - 9/15

Recommended Posts

Because the NFL is on a national level, a popular sport. The networks pay that much for their games because a lot of people will watch the games and it's on Sundays and Mondays (when college football games rarely go on). I'm not saying college football is more important than the NFL on a whole, but to fans in the South, that doesn't have a NFL team OR that has only had one for a very short time relatively speaking (expansion team post 1950s) tend to have a deeper-rooted loyalty for the college team. Like I pointed out, Oklahoma Sooners is more important to fans of the Oklahoma regions than say, Denver Broncos or Kansas City Chiefs or Dallas Cowboys. The fact is there is 119 Division 1-A teams out there compared to the 32 NFL teams. This means that the NCAA has 87 more teams than the NFL, 87 more cities/regions/markets to establish themselves as "the only game in town".

Can we agree that no matter what you think about college football, violence stemming from it, or any sport, is patently stupid?

Another one for the "I can't make this stuff up" column:

Tech Bans Crude Football Cheer

Sep 12, 2007 10:26 AM EDT

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Tech wants football fans to clean up their act when the Hokies get near the goal posts.

Athletic director Jim Weaver has told band director David McKee that the Marching Virginians no longer can play a tune with a double-entendre that fans accompany with gyrations when the Hokies get close to scoring.

Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said Weaver made the decision after years of negative feedback from fans. He also said it fits with a Hokie Respect campaign to curb crude fan behavior.

McKee said the band came up with the tune in the mid-1990s. Fans chant "Oh-ohh, oh-ohhh" to a drum beat followed by "stick it in, stick it in, stick it in" when the drums stop.

At least that one has a point...

It's not a bunch of bandwagon Guido Rutgers fans yelling "F*ck you, Navy!" for no reason.

Do people in Canada kill each other over arguments concerning the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Sudbury Wolves? Serious Q.

Maybe not, but futbol fans put this act to shame

True dat.

Texas and Oklahoma haven't started a shooting war over their game, unlike counties such as Nicaragua and El Salvador.

If Virginia Tech students can't yell "stick it in, stick it in" at a football game, Cho has won.

*ducks head at missing this*

#7 Southern Illinois also beat Northern Illinois last week 34-31 thanks to a 30 yard TD pass by Nick Hill with 22 seconds left. Nick Hill went 21-33 (64%) for 238 yards and 3 TD.

So... FBS Teams beaten by FCS Teams: Michigan, Rice, Northern Illinois, and Iowa State.

Here are a few early offensive spotlight candidates...

QB Kelcy Luke (Alabama A&M): 39-61 (64%) for 562 yards (9.21 YPA) with 7 TD vs. 1 INT.

QB Jacob Phillips (William & Mary): 39-55 (71%) for 575 yards (10.45 YPA) with 5 TD vs. 0 INT.

QB Renaldo Gray (Furman): 34-48 (71%) for 422 yards (8.79 YPA) with 5 TD vs. 1 INT.

RB Omar Cuff (Delaware): 51 carries for 337 yards (6.61 YPC) and 10 TD.

RB Tim Hightower (Richmond): 33 carries for 319 yards (9.67 YPC) and 5 TD.

WR Ramses Barden (Cal Poly): 12 catches for 253 yards (21.08 YPC) and 2 TD.

WR Reginald Jackson (Grambling): 11 catches for 230 yards (20.90 YPC) and 2 TD.

From The Sports Network...

"The fallout from the win at Michigan also had one other effect. Associated Press announced that it would allow voters to cast ballots for FCS teams after several voters questioned the ban against FCS teams last week.

With the change in policy, all Division I teams are now eligible for the AP Top-25

The Mountaineers were listed on four ballots this week in the AP poll and received 19 points, good for 33rd place. Appalachian State remained a unanimous No. 1 in The Sports Network's Top-25."

Hell, even European women's volleyball fans put these guys to shame. I can't see American sports fans doing something so stupid that it halts all sports in the country for a week.

Definitely. Team loyalty/rivalry is not a reason to harm one other. That stuff shows how primitive some people's mindset is to a particular thing. But it's the South, so I'm not all that surprised.

I sure hope UTBroward recovers from his injuries in time to post on Saturday

A: So what if its the South? No one can tell me there aren't bullshit brawls between Cubs and Sox fans at all, nor can you tell me there aren't brawls between Red Sox / Yankees fans. Hell, from the friends I know that went to BC, there are regular fights between BC and Boston. So let's drop the whole "...its the South, its expected" shit.

B: I wouldn't go to Oklahoma if my life depended on it.

Florida State-Colorado seems like a dog of a game for primetime ESPN. I'm sure they'll make Bowden the center of the game, as usual (especially when the team sucks like most recent years). I'd rather see Louisville-national title contender vs Kentucky-likely bowl team. And yeah, blaming the Texas-OK fight on it being in the South was stupid.

Ha, I didn't know FSU vs. Colorado was the primetime ESPN game. Certainly puts the U of L vs. UK rivalry into perspective when that crappy game gets on ESPN instead. It's a lousy decision though, since U of L vs. UK will be something like 56-55.

59-year-old linebacker ready to play for D-III Sul Ross State

Associated Press

After missing two games with injuries, 59-year-old linebacker Mike Flynt will take the field for Sul Ross State, Texas on Saturday for the first time in 37 years.

Flynt will suit up for the Lobos (2-0) when they face Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton. The Crusaders (1-0) are ranked third in the Division III poll. The game will be the American Southwest Conference opener for both teams.

Flynt will not become the oldest college football player, as Edgard Barreto played for Ashland (Ohio) University when he was 60 in 1997. Barreto, however, got in for only one play in the fourth quarter of a blowout in the next-to-last game of the season. So Flynt could be considered the oldest player counted on to be a regular contributor.

"The opportunity like what I'm going after right now is just a testament to what you do at any stage of your life if you'd just take a few minutes every day to prioritize your health and take better care of yourself," Flynt said in an August interview.

Although he's the ultimate college "senior" -- a grandfather and AARP member, he's eight years older than his head coach and six years from Medicare -- Flynt is legitimately capable of playing against guys one-third his age.

Coaches didn't give him a spot on the roster. He had to earn it in two-a-days. He's remained in great shape over the years as a strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M, and later by selling the Powerbase, a fitness machine he invented.

Still, some aches and pains from practices kept him out of the first two games.

Flynt last played for Sul Ross in 1970. He was kicked off the team before the 1971 season because of a fight and never got over the regret of missing his senior year. He shared that with some former teammates at a school reunion earlier this summer and one of them suggested he should rejoin the team.

Flynt never considered it because he thought he was out of eligibility. Turns out, he had one semester left. He's now also taking graduate school courses.

I've been hearing that Demetrius Jones is gonna transfer to Northern Illinois. I got the info from, of all places, the ESPN comments section under an article saying that Jones didn't board the team bus to Michigan. Got a link here.

What the fuck is up with OK St? They're getting worked by Troy of all teams right now.

Troy isn't a team to sneeze at. They've been dangerous at every level they've played. They beat a pretty ok Missouri team in 04 (60 something fumble return by an O-Lineman for a TD will forever be etched in my memory). When they were in the Southland, my alma mater played them frequently, and they were pretty powerful then on the FCS (then I-AA) level.

Watching the game tonight, I'll say they've made some nice improvements to their stadium since I last was there in 2001.

Actually, I think it was DeMarcus Ware that returned that fumble. I just thought OK St. was supposed to be pretty good this year and now they're 1-2.

After a little research, I found that it was OG Junior Louissaint, Jr. - A mauling guard from West Hills Junior College.

And The Citadel is tied with Wisconsin late in the first half. Now that would be a bigger upset than Appalachian State. With the way the Badgers have played the last six quarters you really have to question their Top 10 status.
