Guest Pizza Hut's Game Face Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 I watched Duckman, but never thought incredibly highly of it at the time. But listen! "Porn Wars" and "It Must Be a Camel." Spectacular.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Even when it's lame, it's funny, though, like all the Franklin stuff. He's just sitting in his study, reading the NYC Yellow Pages. That's good stuff. I'll defend The Critic to the ends of the earth. I like The Critic, but some of the gags are dated, which is something you can't accuse of, say, the at-the-time contemporary episodes of The Simpsons.
Guest Pizza Hut's Game Face Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I know. You're right. The Critic was very much a product of its time. The only thing that hasn't held up from pre-'95 Simpsons is the animation quality, which looks crude compared to what we have now. The syndicators are doing their part to make sure we forget, though. 17some years and all I see is "Homer becomes a food critic."
Kinetic Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Having the advantage of digital animation is much easier on the people that actually draw the show, but I kind of prefer the slightly cruder look of season 3-4 "Simpsons." Basically anything before that is unpleasant to look at, given how the characters eventually came to look. This could be based on the quality of the shows, I guess.
Richard Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I enjoyed both seasons, but the ABC run of the critic was far superior to the Fox episodes, both in terms of writing and animation. Margo looks completely different in the later shows. Also, whoever's in charge of choosing which Simpsons episodes air in syndication should be thrown into the street and shot.
King Kamala Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 For some reason, I always confuse Duckman with the 17th unsuccessful attempt at a Jim. J Bullock comeback vehicle, Queer Duck. Mostly because they're both "adult" cartoons starring talking ducks but there's really nothing else in common between the two.
Kinetic Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Queer Duck was about a decade later. It was not so good. At least the movie wasn't.
King Kamala Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Yeah but my knowledge of Duckman's existance started when it was being rerun on Comedy Central roughly around the same time as Queer Duck (early this decade around '02 or so)
Kinetic Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 You mean you didn't watch Duckman on its original home, the USA Network, on Saturday nights? All the while wondering why Jason Alexander would bother with this shit, not yet knowing the indignities that his post-Seinfeld career had in store? Then you haven't really watched Duckman, you see.
Nighthawk Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I thought Queer Duck was ok for what it was.
Kinetic Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I have no idea what that means. What was it?
Nighthawk Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 A web toon. For that it was ok. I agree with you about the movie, that was overstepping the bounds.
Kinetic Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 There was a bit where the bear--I think--was stuck in a hole and was being sodomized by woodland creatures. Like a bit of a cross between "Winnie the Pooh" and Inc's forbidden avatar.
Guest Pizza Hut's Game Face Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 You mean you didn't watch Duckman on its original home, the USA Network, on Saturday nights? Hey, I was eight! I had to wait till I was thirteen.
The Niggardly King Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I can't remember anything about The Critic. Duckman will always hold a special place in my heart.
Kinetic Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 This Pizza Hut's Game Face thing makes me think of you as something that I can win if I get credit for reading a certain number of books. But I'm sure you've heard that before.
King Kamala Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 What's everybody's pick for worst "adult" animated series? I'm going to have to go with God, The Devil, and Bob though I feel like I'm forgetting an especially terrible one. God, The Devil, and Bob was just flat out mediocre in every way.
Guest Pizza Hut's Game Face Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Never saw it. Wasn't The Brothers Grunt fairly frowned upon?
Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 The Oblongs was a lousy show. Mission Hill, too. I've made my feelings on Family Guy known. Outside of those, I haven't watched many of the adult cartoons that surfaced within the last two decades. In my youth, I did watch such short-lived fare as Capitol Critters and Fish Police. I don't remember much about either.
Kinetic Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 King of the Hill is almost unwatchable now. The first two seasons stand up in syndication, though. I remember Family Dog being absurdly hyped and then just disappearing.
King Kamala Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 The Oblongs, that was the piece of shit I was trying to remember! That's got to be the nadir of Will Ferrell's career alongside the Bewitched movie and that soccer movie he did. Another show that should be brought up is Game Over, the CGI UPN show about video game characters. Fun fact; it came in last in the ratings of shows that aired on network television that season. Drawn Together is also pretty shitty from what I've seen. Oh and Father of The Pride that kind of sucked.
Richard Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Did Kid Notorious suck? You bet your ass it did.
Gary Floyd Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Home Movies was pretty good though.
King Kamala Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Did Kid Notorious suck? You bet your ass it did. Another shitty one and my younger brother loved it and made me watch several episodes. He also owns all of the seasons of Drawn Together on DVD. Damn him!
Nighthawk Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Home Movies was pretty good though. At the Dethklok show, Brendon received a small "Bring back Home Movies!" chant.
Jingus Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 THE worst adult's animation show ever was easily this godawful New Yogi Bear show that Adult Swim aired a couple of times. It was so terrible that they even roasted it in their own commercial bumpers, "why haven't we cancelled this show already" and such.
Guest Hadley Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 The best scene from the critic was this: (jay walks into franklin's study. He has glued all the silverware, and the cat, to the ceiling) Jay: Ok, I understand the silverware, but why the cat? Franklin: You UNDERSTAND the silverware? (makes cuckoo sounds) And since we had a discussion about comedy centrals early days, does anyone remember Almost Live? Billy Kwan, Speed Walker, and the Lame List were awesome.
chuck415 Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 The Critic was an amazing show, and it's an absolute shame it only lasted 23 episodes. Especially when it was doing well on FOX and basically got cancelled because the new guy in charge didn't like it. I watched that block of Comedy Central cartoons for years, despite them constantly fucking with the schedule and me never knowing just what I was going to get. The best was in 2003 when they'd have Clerks, The Critic, Duckman, and Dilbert. Before all of those but Duckman got DVD releases that comedy block was a godsend. Speaking of which, Duckman needs a god damned DVD release. I knew I couldn't be the only one that liked that show. Another CC show I miss is Insomniac with Dave Attell.
fazzle Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 The best scene from the critic was this: (jay walks into franklin's study. (makes cuckoo sounds) And since we had a discussion about comedy centrals early days, does anyone remember Almost Live? Billy Kwan, Speed Walker, and the Lame List were awesome. No, the best scene from the critic was easily "Buy my book! Buy my book! Buy my book!" *gunshot* "Why'd you do that? All it said was 'Buy my book! Buy my..' " *gun cocks*
Slayer Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 Best Critic scene discussion begins and ends with "green peaness" Any other scene with Maurice LaMarche as Orson Welles was also awesome Another one of my favorites: "Are you prone to having blackouts?" "No." "Are you prone to having blackouts?" "No." "Are you prone to having blackouts?" "No!" "Oh, better than the rest of us, Mr. I-Know-Where-I-Am-At-All-Times!" "Sorry..." ... "Are you prone to having blackouts?" "Yes!"
