That's a LOT of adversity for a coach to deal with, and he's done admirably. What has Gruden done differently this year, other than let eternal journeyman Jeff Garcia win him some games they lost last year? Seems like a similar situation.

Since its mention is inevitable, does Miami pull off the biggest regular season upset in memory?

He brought a team back from being terrible to being really good, which is something that people said he couldn't do. I said this already. They said he couldn't build a team, that he was only worth bringing in if you were right on the cusp. People said that if Dungy or Reid got deep into the playoffs again and lost, before the Colts won the Super Bowl, that they should bring in Gruden to those respective cities to push them over and win. But Gruden "tires" on people after a while because he's so high-intensity. This is what was said.

The Garcia decision was not obvious. He was (and still is) high on Bruce Gradkowski. He brought in a guy who admittedly had a good season the year before but was not really in high demand. His arm is probably weaker than it's ever been, but they've been smart with the ball. Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman both got hurt, and yet there's Earnest Graham chugging away. They built an excellent offensive line, largely through the draft in the past couple of years. Thanks to Petitgout's injury though, they have an absolute nobody playing left tackle. Do you even know his name? I didn't. I had to look it up. It's Donald Penn. He was an undrafted free agent a couple years ago.

They got rid of Shelton Quarles. They brought in new safeties. They had/have Philip Buchanon playing right corner opposite of Ronde Barber, instead of Brian Kelly. Joey Galloway is tearing up the league with a quarterback that has no arm strength. They turned Jovan Haye (who?) into a starting defensive tackle on one of the best defenses in the league. They have awesome safety depth with Jackson, Allen, Phillips, and Piscitelli.

These are all things that more or less came into being this year. I have to give Gruden a lot of credit for bringing a 4-12 team back into serious contention for the NFC Championship (yeah, I said it). He wasn't supposed to be able to do this sort of thing, and he proved that he can.

Worst: Tom Couglin because the Giants will find a way to blow their playoff spot after going 6-2 which is just sad. Since is the second year in a row of a second half slump

Best: Mr. 14-0.

Thursday

PIT @ STL : PIT needs to win as bad as Whitney Houston needs a hit of crack. But they will find another way to lose a game they have no business losing.

Saturday

DAL @ CAR : DAL will steamroll here and go on to win by 17.

Sunday- 1:00

KC @ DET : DET by 3

CLE @ CIN : CLE wins and makes a run for the divisional title. CLE by 6

GB @ CHI : GB wins by 10 and we have a fun week 17 seeing who gets number 1 seed in the NFC.

NYG @ BUF : BUF wins and the NYG start their march to out of playoff contention.

HOU @ IND : IND up 30 by half time and the Texans make a 4th quarter comeback to only lose by 6.

PHI @ NO : NO needs to win badly and will find a way to keep running the ball. NO by 7

OAK @ JAC : JAC wins by the second biggest margin of the day 23.

4:00

ATL @ ARI : fieldgoal bowl, ARI by 9

TB @ SF : TB by 10 but they wouldn't be trying hard to win either.

MIA @ NE : NASA might be needed to tally the final score. PATS by atleast 40

BAL @ SEA : SEA loses here to shock everyone. BAL by 3

NYJ @ TEN : TEN by 20

WAS @ MIN : hardest game of the week to call. 24 to 24, goes to OT and winner of cointoss wins game by fieldgoal.

Monday Night Football

DEN @ SD: Game over by halftime. SD by 17

I think alot of people are overlooking the bears vs packers game. The Bears have nothing to lose and will try especially hard to fuck up green bay's chances of gaining home field advantage in the playoffs.

Pro Bowl selections here

Wow. They have Sean Taylor as starting Free Safety.

No one plays defense in the Pro Bowl anyway. I don't see why a dead safety is any less effective.

It's a joke I've made before, but I'll reiterate that Sean Taylor is about as likely to show up for the game as most of the living selections.

I don't think it is fucked up as much as just bad luck. His best years (we'll go with 2000 and 2003) while he was 6th in rushing both years he was 5th and 4th respectively in the AFC. He was great when other people just happened to be greater.

Word on the street is Bill Parcells will be named the new Vice President of Football Operations for the Atlanta Falcons. That's certainly not a job I'd want to take if I were him. That team needs to be torn down and rebuilt completely and I'm not exactly sure he's the right man for the job.

I think it'd be fun to see Parcells roll some heads in Atlanta.

We know Deangelo Hall is a goner, and I wouldn't get too settled if I were Roddy White. Problem is, all the cancerous parts that he needs to jettison are the team's best players. I have faith that he can put a decent defense together, but it might be tricky to find a permanent fixture at QB and rebuild the offense in a non-Vick way.

The phrase "defensive" head coach is a fallacy, anyway. Tony Dungy's career was as a D-coordinator, and his franchise is squarely on the shoulders of a Heisman winning first pick overall superstar for ten years coach on the field hall of fame QB and pure offensive talent at every position from Left Guard on up. A head coach's job is to ensure that ALL phases of his team are winning.

First pick? Yes

Superstar? Yes

Coach on the field? Yes

Hall of Fame QB? Yes

6'5", Laser arm? Yes

Heisman winner? Charles Woodson.

He did pretty well with the Jets in a bad situation.

Same for the Cowboys. I think Parcells is ideal for a rebuilding job and has done great wherever he's been. The Giants won Super Bowls, the Patriots got to the Super Bowl under his leadership, he got the Jets within one game of the Super Bowl (and without injuries they might have won the thing the next season), and put Dallas back on the right track. That said, this Falcons job is probably one of the toughest he'll ever encounter. It will be interesting to see what the Falcons do with their draft pick and if they decide to trade it for more picks/players or use it on a QB.

And yes, Peyton Manning did not win the Heisman trophy contrary to what the media was hyping up during his senior year at Tennessee.

Sucks Taylor didn't make it again but, like in every other good year of his, who do you leave off? Addai? Hell no. LT? Nope. Parker? Maybe a case can be made but still, no.

Yeah, can't leave off Tomlinson. I heard on TV he's the best running back in history. 7 carries for a grueling 11 yards, fool. Best 11 yards ever earned. Best 7 carries ever taken.

And now, this week's Ups and Downs in the Wide World of Football:

UP -

Drew Bledsoe

Jason Ferguson

DOWN -

Brian Brohm

Chris Redman

By the way, do you think maybe the decision to make Emmitt Thomas the head coach, straight from defensive backs coach, was an attempt to placate Hall after he was seen on TV telling Sean Payton that he'd play for the Saints for the minimum contract (obviously an exaggeration)?

Would be neat if Parcells installed the 3-4. This is how it would probably look even with no personnel changes:

LCB D. Hall

SS L. Milloy

FS C. Crocker

RCB C. Houston

LOLB M. Boley

LILB K. Brooking

RILB D. Williams

ROLB J. Abraham

LE J. Anderson

NT M. Stanley

RE R. Coleman

Haha. Parcells backed out of the deal with Atlanta.

The Falcons say he got another offer from Miami and then told Blank he won't be signing with the Falcons. I'd love to see Randy Mueller get fired.

Is there anybody in pro sports who jerks teams or people around more than Parcells?

Larry Brown comes to mind. Pat Riley has had a few nice moves over the years. Bill Belichick, Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino have all tried their hand as well. I guess Parcells is still the master though.
