Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 I hear all this talk of Nicholson, DeNiro and Pacino as the best actors going today or the best of all time and I can't help but laugh because despite all the good they've done they've also done bad. In some cases very bad. Daniel Day-Lewis, for all purposes has never put in a bad performance. Ever. From My Left Foot to The Boxer to Last of The Mohicans and on the man has pretty much been the most solid actor of the last 25 years. If your "personal opinion" is that he isn't then you're either retarded or feel very confident in naming another actor. Either way, like he does once every four or so years D-Day is showing up this Christmas to blow us all the fuck away. Again. I'd be remiss to not mention that he has a very talented director in Paul Thomas Anderson backing him in this tale of an oil baron and his obsession with greed in early 1900's Texas. D-Day plays a ruthless tycoon named Daniel Plainview who has come to a small community that's recently struck it big in finding a huge oil field to convince the locals that he's the man they want to sell the land to. His nemesis comes in the form of Paul Dano, most known for his role in Little Miss Sunshine who's the spiritual leader of the community and has a reputation as a healer. Right now in terms of reviews this movie is getting it seems like it's a shoe-in for best picture, director and actor at the Oscars come March. We all saw how a great director can bring the best out of Lewis in Gangs of New York and I've no doubt in my mind that we will be seeing the same here. I've had to wait for three years for this movie to come out and thankfully, the wait won't be much longer.
At Home 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 I am really excited to see this movie. When does it come out? Probably should read the story it's based on beforehand though.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 Opens in select theaters on Christmas day, national release sometime in January I think but not 100%.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 Well that made this movie just a bit more awesome. Anderson has always used good music in the past and looks like that trend will continue.

Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 I am really excited to see this movie. When does it come out? Probably should read the story it's based on beforehand though. Allegedly, the basic premise is all that remains from the original book; everything else is Anderson.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 Just going by the trailer, Day-Lewis gives a crazy awesome performance. The line at the end "I can't keep doing this on my own. With these...ah...people." Then laughing. I get chills every time I see it. I can only imagine how great he is in the whole movie. I'm seeing this one as soon as I can. Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 I have some reservations about Paul Dano having what appears to be a sizable role, since, well, he was terrible in the only other film I've seen him in. Maybe PTA can get a good perf out of him. (Wouldn't be the first time he coaxed solid work out of someone who was otherwise useless; witness Heather Graham.) Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 Hopefully we won't see Dano naked in rollerskates in this one.

We'll have to settle for drunken MMA revelry.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2007 I saw the trailer for this before No Country For Old Men and it certainly looks intriguing. I wouldn't mind seeing a scenery chewing Day-Lewis performance similar to Gangs of New York. While I won't necessarily argue whether he is or isn't the top actor of the past 25 years the reason he doesn't immediately jump to one's mind is that he's simply not in much stuff. He wasn't in anything at all from The Boxer in 1997 till 2002's Gangs of New York. He also followed up on his big Oscar momentum from My Left Foot....by being in nothing from 1989 to 1992, when he was in Last of the Mohicans.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2007 My point wasn't about how many movies he does, just that whenever he makes one it's usually the best performance of the year.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2007 I like Day-Lewis pretty well, just can't think of that all time mega classic he's ever been in. The other guys mentioned like Nicholson, Pacino, DeNiro....all of them have been in numerous classics. Sure, they all have crap on their resumes as well but how about a couple of these gems I saw for Day-Lewis: Stars and Bars (1988) Eversmile, New Jersey (1989) Maybe There Will Be Blood will be that one bonafide classic that is missing from Day-Lewis' resume. Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2007 cabbageboy, you're pursuing an argument no one was making. And one that's not worth making. That Lewis hasn't been in a "classic" film is irrelevant to the point Curry—and you yourself, given that you acknowledged Nicholson, De Niro, et al have made their share of garbage—made. The Niggardly King 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Great movie. By the end of it though it sort of becomes like this really... really dark comedy. Daniel Day-Lewis brings such intensity in the closing minutes and Dano is actually good in this. The type of performance that will have most of the general public look at him in a different light. Angle-plex 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2008 Saw this last night.....have very mixed reactions to it. It's very well made, the acting is top notch, and the duel between DDL and the church guy is intellectually stimulating. I never got emotionally evolved though and the end is a little too over the top, although it's obviously what they were going for. Really don't know how I feel about this one. Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2008 That's about as close as you can get to a performance overwhelming a movie. I loved the film but damn if Lewis doesn't just make everything else about it look pedestrian by comparison.
Frosty 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2008 Did this movie even get released in Canada? I saw the posters for it before Christmas, but not there isn't even the slightest mention of it on the Empire Threatres website that I can see. Weird....

Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2008 I've been reading some reactions to this, and it's a pretty polarizing movie. Either people think it's the greatest thing ever or they absolutely hate it. Lots of "worst movie I've ever seen" and "anti capitalism!" and "anti religion!" and blah blah blah. I think that's good, though. Movies don't often get that kind of vitriolic reaction anymore. I'm seeing this as many times as possible. (My personal record for seeing a movie in a theater is 6 for -of all thing- Con Air. I don't know if I'll beat that, but I'll give it a shot.)

The first time I saw it there were only about 15 people in the theater, and one of them was Dane Cook. Anyway, I don't really see how someone can like movies, and not like There Will Be Blood. Its epic.
