This Week in Baseball 6/16 - 6/22

Recommended Posts

12th straight quality start for Edinson Volquez, who goes to 10-2 after beating the yankees.

Something funny though is Cincy Shortstops, I'm not sure if this has ever happened to Cincy, maybe someone here can say if it's happened to their favorite team.

Coming into season Shortstops

Alex Gonzalez--Put on DL with a broken knee

Jeff Keppinger takes over--put on DL with a broken knee

Jerry Hairston Jr. takes over--put on DL with a broken thumb

Jolbert Cabrera takes over--put on DL with a dislocated thumb

All of that by mid June

Paul Janish you're next, be afraid, be very afraid.

They're on their 5th ss by mid-June, none removed because of play, all due to injury.

The Os have used 5 SS too (Luis Hernandez, Eider Torres, Brandon Fahey,"fast" Freddie Bynum and Alex Cintron) though the Os have gone through so many cause they all suck. Cintron hit a HR last night but he made like 3 bad plays in the field to almost negate the HR he hit. Bynum cant hit so his speed is pretty useless but hes a bit better fielding.

Burnett can come on over now that Zambrano's shoulder is injured. Otherwise, the Cubs are done already.

Yeah they've got the best record in the league almost halfway through the season, they really need to quit now and focus on next year instead.

This game is more like a suckfest than a slugfest. If I have to look at Craig Counsell's goofy-ass batting stance one more time, I'm going to defenestrate my television.

I've never heard anyone legitimately use the word "defenestrate" in a sentence. Wow. Congratulations.

Guest !!!

I guess if it'd be anyone, it'd be me. The other times it was used here were me threatening to do that to myself to get "Girlfriend" out of my head, and then once again somewhere in an e-fed post. I have a theory re: this board, that any word in the English language, as well as some in Spanish, Japanese, and Lettish, can be found in an e-fed post. You can't run one stinkin' search on this forum without having to slog through the epic TL;DRs of the board's bottom. Try it.

Went to the the A's/Marlins game, which had to be one of the more entertaining games I've ever been to. It had a little bit of everything with back-to-back homeruns that included Carlos Gonzalez's first MLB homerun, Huston Street blow two leads, two monster shots by Dan Uggla (he is a bad, bad man right now) including one in the 9th to send the game to extras, and a dropped ball by Luis Gonzalez in the 11th that led to the winning run that was knocked in by Kurt Suzuki, who had a shockingly huge night at the plate. First time I've seen the Marlins in person which just leaves the Reds, Mets, Nationals, Braves and I think the Rockies (might have seen then in the early stages of interleague play but can't remember) that I've never seen in person.

Wasn't Dice-K supposed to be good? We went through all of this bidding to negotiate hype for this?

Yeah, because 8-0 with a 3.46 era coming into today is horrible isn't it. I know you get upset when the cards win because you're a cubs fan but come on man. You're quite the reactionary poster.

The Phillies in 1970 had a heck of a run with their catchers. Catchers Tim McCarver and Mike Ryan were both injured in the same inning! Emergency catcher Jim Hutto got to fill in for a couple of days until the Phils could call up their AAA crew, Mike Compton and Del Bates. When Bates was injured the next month, the Phillies were forced to activate bullpen catcher Doc Edwards.

Actually it was 3.46 after today. I think it was like 2.54 going into today's start.

He had a mediocre to ok rookie year, and was having a good to great 2nd season before he went on the DL. So because his first start coming off of the DL sucked we should declare him a bust? I find it doubtful that he'll end up being worth all the money that was thrown his way, but to declare him not good because of this one game is a fucking joke.

Isn't his record and ERA a bit of a mirage, though? It seems like any time I've watched him pitch this year, he's walked a ton and managed to get out of most jams. This, nevertheless, has made him a six-inning pitcher at best.

I'm inclined to agree with this. His peripherals are pretty mediocre -- 1.42 WHIP, 5.68 K/9, 1.37 K/BB, .265 BABIP. His saving grace this year has been that he's giving up far fewer home runs.

Justin Duchscherer lowered his ERA to 1.99, best in the A.L (now qualifies after today). Obviously there's little to no chance he'll keep up this pace and I still have serious doubts that he'll stay healthy all year (had a brief stint on the DL already), but he's pitching well enough that it starts to make me wonder if he was being wasted the last few years in the bullpen.

Duchscherer is certainly for real, as the peripherals indicate. He had a 3.52 career ERA in the minors, the vast majority of that as a starter. It amazes me that he took so long to stick in the majors, let alone become a starter.
