Tropic Thunder's weekend total is going to be crippled because of the Wednesday opening, and you can never underestimate the geek power to pay money for something completely fucking retarded. That movie was released when the secondary market was based on VHS rentals and PPV (VHS sales were never near the amount DVD sales are). I could be wrong, but I think the home theater age has made people more likely to defer their potential multiple viewings until the DVD or blu-ray was come out and they can just buy the thing for the price of 2 tickets. It was mostly for rentals, though over the years some big movies would come out and be under 20.00. Titanic was like that, wasn't it? Priced under 20.00 on its initial VHS release? The most ridiculous pricing ever for a movie was the old 50th anniversary Gone With the Wind. It was in a deluxe white box (it was huge) and it was almost 100 bucks. I know this cause I just read one of Ebert's books (Questions For the Movie Answer Man), and he talks about it in there. He says they did it that way because people were expected to rent it first. I hated it when VHS was king, and it looked even more retarded when DVD came around and yet VHS movies were still "Priced to rent." I remember I think it was Gladiator came out for $20 on DVD but $100 on VHS. Like anyone would pay that. Hell Ride (which I saw) and Red (which I can't see b/c it involves a dead dog) came close "Red" is actually an adaptation of a great Jack Ketchum novel (read it if you get a chance.) I've been hearing a lot of good stuff about that one, especially Brian Cox' performance. I always thought he was an underrated actor. Only Dennis Hopper and David Carradine seemed to get it and have fun with the project. Oh, Vinnie Jones was hilarious in his one real scene. Michael Madsen played himself basically. The movie seemed really sleazy, lots of scenes of naked women for no reason. Coincidentally, many of these young naked woman wound up fucking Larry Bishop's character, who was the writer and director. Imagine that.
