Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 I know... I was drinking beer and watching women's volleyball, same thing, and I saw PE on Wednesday.
dubq 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 I think Clone Wars might have a chance to take the #1 spot from both Batman and Tropic Thunder. Tropic Thunder's weekend total is going to be crippled because of the Wednesday opening, and you can never underestimate the geek power to pay money for something completely fucking retarded. Well, that's pretty uncalled for. What's your damage?
SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 I doubt any movie will overtake Titanic in terms of domestic theater gross. That movie was released when the secondary market was based on VHS rentals and PPV (VHS sales were never near the amount DVD sales are). I could be wrong, but I think the home theater age has made people more likely to defer their potential multiple viewings until the DVD or blu-ray was come out and they can just buy the thing for the price of 2 tickets. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 Thing is, VHS tapes used to be so ridiculously expensive on some movies for a while. Remember when a movie would come out with the insane 99.95 price? It was mostly for rentals, though over the years some big movies would come out and be under 20.00. Titanic was like that, wasn't it? Priced under 20.00 on its initial VHS release? RedJed 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 I think Dark Knight will have the legs to take the number one spot, somehow. Hell, I've seen it three times already myself and still am planning on seeing it one more time finally in the IMAX.

Hell, I've seen it three times already myself and still am planning on seeing it one more time finally in the IMAX. It's probably not going to catch Titanic. It has $150 million to go, and is going to lose out on weekday business soon.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2008 You need 15 million more tickets to be sold to catch up. That's definitely doable. Though no I don't believe they break the record.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I knew there was a reason why the only copy I had of Titanic was an old rental copy....30 bucks was a bit much, though I think it was on 2 tapes. The most ridiculous pricing ever for a movie was the old 50th anniversary Gone With the Wind. It was in a deluxe white box (it was huge) and it was almost 100 bucks. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 Pulp Fiction was $100 when it first came out. I know this cause I just read one of Ebert's books (Questions For the Movie Answer Man), and he talks about it in there. He says they did it that way because people were expected to rent it first. It's such a different world, now...
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 Movies used to be priced for rental, so they cost $100, unless they were popular movies or kids movies. That was the first thing about DVD that struck me as amazing. Wait, now you can buy every movie the week it comes out? Insane!
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 Since ir's holding up real well, I'm just curious if anyone has seen Journey in 3D? I want to, but the inflated ticket price turns me off. My two friends who have seen it, saw it in 2-D which is just pointless.

My two friends who have seen it, saw it in 2-D which is just pointless. The 3-D is top notch in it...........the story? Eh, a little out there, but it still makes sense and is entertaining enough. It's not a direct remake of the book/original film, but more a homage to it, in a way.

The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I went and saw it. If you're going to see it...please see it in 3D. I can't imagine having to watch it based on plot. It's a pretty bad movie...but the 3D and Brendan Fraser's likeablity make it passable entertainment.
Guest Smues Report post Posted August 12, 2008 "Priced to rent" was such a crock of bullshit. I hated it when VHS was king, and it looked even more retarded when DVD came around and yet VHS movies were still "Priced to rent." I remember I think it was Gladiator came out for $20 on DVD but $100 on VHS. Like anyone would pay that. I remember MST3K: The Movie was originally priced to rent and I had to wait like 6 months before they dropped it and I could own a copy.

Yeah, I've actually heard some semi-decent buzz about it that makes me think it will do ok business, probably 3rd or 4th this weekend. The previews look damn good, granted I'm a horror fan, but still....

It's a stupid horror movie being released in the middle of August. Not an overhyped bomb at all. Ive seen the dumb preview about 5000000000 times. Kiefer's acting career is over, he'll never be able to do any roles without Jack Bauer being on the screen unless he undergoes a major makeover. I cant even watch Young Guns anymore either because of it and hes much younger with long hair in that.
Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I'll give "Mirrors" a shot, but that's because the guy directing it did one of my favorite slasher movies of the decade in "High Tension." Bad twist aside, that's how it's done if you ask me.

He hasn't had much of an acting career except for 24 and that one film with Michael Douglas from a few years back. So how can his acting career be over when he hasn't even been involved in any recent bombs, much less in ANYTHING?
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 Let's ignore Marvin, so as not to derail discussion. No sub-$1,000 PSA movies this weekend. Hell Ride (which I saw) and Red (which I can't see b/c it involves a dead dog) came close

Hell Ride (which I saw) and Red (which I can't see b/c it involves a dead dog) came close "Red" is actually an adaptation of a great Jack Ketchum novel (read it if you get a chance.) I've been hearing a lot of good stuff about that one, especially Brian Cox' performance. I always thought he was an underrated actor. Lucky ("May") McKee was originally the director, but he had to step out (creative differences I've heard.) Here's the trailer
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I get what they were going for with Hell Ride, but a lot of it fell flat. Only Dennis Hopper and David Carradine seemed to get it and have fun with the project. Oh, Vinnie Jones was hilarious in his one real scene. Michael Madsen played himself basically. The movie seemed really sleazy, lots of scenes of naked women for no reason. Coincidentally, many of these young naked woman wound up fucking Larry Bishop's character, who was the writer and director. Imagine that. I learned that in the desert, there are only greasy ugly bikers, naked women and Dennis Hopper.
