Guest Tzar Lysergic Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Pancreatic cancer. NFL.com right now.
MFer Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Yeah, I noted that in the preseason thread...I didn't even recall him being sick. Just wow.
Guest Tzar Lysergic Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 For those interested in his playing career: http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.jsp?player_id=220
Guest WhackingCockDick Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Roger Goodell is consolidating his power again.
sfaJack Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Tagliabue had Upshaw on a pretty short leash already.
BX Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Well, I guess that solves the problem of Upshaw refusing to relinquish his spot.
HarleyQuinn Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Wow... Also was unaware he was sick and sad to see him go (Although I didn't think much of him as the head of the NFLPA). "Gene learned he was sick just this past Sunday and he died with his family at his side."
Kinetic Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 So he's diagnosed with cancer on Sunday and is dead by Thursday? Terrifying.
JaMarcus Russell's #1 Caucasian Fan Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 RIP to one of the greatest Raiders and offensive guards to play the game of football. Terrible news to wake up to.
Prophet of Mike Zagurski Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Pancreatic cancer is one of the hardest cancers to diagnose. My grandpa died from it... Anyway, RIP. I wonder who takes over the NFLPA next?
HarleyQuinn Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Whoever takes over, I'd like to see more given towards the retired players (esp. those still alive who played in the 50's/60's and even 70's).
The Niggardly King Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Wow, I didn't see Al Davis outliving him.
BruiserKC Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 RIP Gene Upshaw...my prayers go to his family. As for his role as the president of the NFLPA...he did a great deal for the league. No matter what people thought of him or what they were hoping to get by ousting him at the end, he realized that in the long run it was in the best interests of the union to work with the owners, not against them. That made the NFL the top league and has made football the number one sport in the United States. I point to you the practically non-existent NHL as an example of what happens when it all goes wrong.
Guest WhackingCockDick Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 Yes, working with the owners has been a great boon for...owners. It doesn't benefit the players a lot when they don't have guaranteed contracts, or when older players have no pensions and have to depend on Mike Ditka's fraudulent fundraising just to hope to pay their medical bills. Marvin Miller, now there's a cocksucker who worked on behalf of labor.
