Ring of Fire doesn't inspire me to crank the volume and sing at the top of my lungs. "8 Miles High" by the Byrds vs Respect" by Aretha Franklin -I've heard people (Kornheiser) say they prefer Marvin Gayes' version, but I'll always prefer Franklin's. "Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys vs "Cupid" by Sam Cooke - That homeless guy could really belt this one out. He had one other song he sang, but I can't remember what it was at the time. That is one of the most wretched songs ever conceived, composed, performed, recorded, released, and played. No hyperbole on my part. It's one of those little chestnuts of shit that somehow represents everything that was awful about the 1960s. Good riddance, thank fuck. That said, with the field down to 64, I think it's time to offer more thoughts. "Build me up Buttercup" by The Foundations: taking it to the finals. You have to sing along. It's like a rule! "Respect" by Aretha Franklin: I will push as much Stax as far as I can. I know it's overplayed and people thus hate it, but quit thinking about Aretha, and think of those horns! Yeah! The guitar! "Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys: This is one of the only High School Pep Band's Greatest Hits I haven't soured on, like I did with "Smoke on the Water," "Sunshine of Your Love," and (Also safe: Stax classics "Green Onions" and "Soulfinger.") "She's Not There" by The Zombies: I repeat, in the spirit of flagrant electioneering: NEVER TRUST ANYBODY OVER 90!! "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel: "House of the Rising Sun" is very much badass, but this is one of those transcendent songs that has to win out for now. Tom Wilson, probably the most fantastically important and influential producer whom we don't much talk about here (Teo Macero would be the other; in contrast we've given Messrs. Martin and Eno their propers many times over) basically popularized folk rock by overdubbing electrics/rhythm section over what would otherwise by a boring old song. This song enabled Simon & Garfunkel to continue as a duo and crank out some really good stuff, which in turn enabled Paul Simon to grow a dopey moustache and embark on a solo career of half-baked middlebrow wallpaper and bumbling yuppie minstrelsy. Also, the song in and of itself is one of the great full-song crescendos, n'est-ce pas? It's one big slow build up to "THE WORDS OF THE PROPHETS ARE WRITTEN ON THE SUBWAY WALLS!", and I love it. "She Loves You" by The Beatles: I wanted to push Serge along, but this is one of my favorite early Beatles songs, this and "Please Please Me." Again, great musical moment: "with a LOVE/LIKE/THAT..." to the end. Awww, man. Melodic/harmonic/rhythmic perfection. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye: This is really a fascinating arrangement. I love the slow wedding-cake build of the Rhodes, drums, tambourine, guitar, then the orchestra. Also, note the drumming: heavy on the toms, bass drum, snare, and bongos, easy on the cymbals until they're necessary. It's very dark and pulsating, distinct because of so many drummers' tendency to "ride the ride," so to speak, where they over-rely on the ride cymbal, which I feel always gets in the way. This is more open. I'm so uneasy about saying it has a "tribal" feel, but I just did it anyway. "Good Vibrations" by Beach Boys: Not my favorite Beach Boys song (that would be "I Get Around" or "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"), but I'm pushing it along all the same. Mock-theremin love. "Eight Days A Week" by The Beatles: better than its opponent "Hey Jude" by The Beatles: I hope it doesn't come down to all Beatles, but it's like, how do you vote for inferior stuff instead, right? "My Girl" by The Temptations: Quite possibly my favorite Motown song of all. "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin: I'll be honest, I never cared for this partic Zep fave ("Whole Lotta Love" is the other one that I can do without, even more so) but it's preferable to the alternative. "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King: Look, it's just not the time for long-winded Dylan. "Sad-Eyed" is the superior longform song from that particular album, and I'm already advancing "Like a Rolling Stone." I expect a fight to the death on this one, but this is a showcase for Memphis & Motown, or ought to be, as far as I'm concerned. The vocals here. So simple, but so earnest! The string section is also top-flight, for those of us who appreciate a good pop-single string section. "Daydream Believer" by The Monkees: I'm glad it's socially acceptable to appreciate the pop proficiency of the Monkees. I know I used to make a big stink about that particular aspect of music talk, but why hold back any longer? "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison: Forced pick. "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley: Not doing Orbison v. Orbison. "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals: I don't like that Stones song. "My Generation" by The Who: I don't think I voted for this or its opponent, but hey, not so bad. "Purple Haze" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Not the best Hendrix song, but it's the only one here, so onward Hendrix soldier. I like Patti Smith's "Gloria" better, I think. I feel like my worldview is being updated. Or that it should be. "The Weight" by The Band: Not my favorite Band song, that'd be "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," but it's up there, and so here we are. "Time of The Season" by The Zombies: love the VU, but this isn't their place, 'specially not against one of the great organ showcases (and there were many more then!) of '60s rock. And to say nothing of the bass, the guitar, the harmonies, even the handclaps and "ahhh"s! All of those components blow my mind and STILL they're not worthy of the top billing in what makes this song so fucking awesome. This is another one that has the muscle to take this. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys: vote for this a thousand times over. Sometimes I forget how amazing this song is and then I remind myself. "Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground: While no, the spirit of the thread is not one for pushing along Velvet Underground album tracks, I will not vote for Donovan. Donovan can lick my sack. "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5: Have I voted for a Jackson 5er yet? We will vote for this one. "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs: Like I said about the Hair songs, "Turn, Turn, Turn" is awful '60s bullshit that should be banished from playback forever. Meanwhile, "Green Onions" is possibly the Memphis soul song to the rest of the world, will never age, and will always be loved. Potential winner. "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan: I had to go back on my Stax promise because the importance of this song mandates that it's at least in the round of 32. The Al Kooper organ part is neat, as is its legend. "Gimme Shelter" by Rolling Stones: here's the one Stones song I absolutely love, and now it makes me vote against prog. Oh well. Not the time nor place for prog. So dark, so foreboding. It makes you think of Altamont. "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" by James Brown: Hitler was a vegetarian. Haha. I hope one person gets it. "She Loves You" by The Beatles Even at their most primitive, the Beatles' lyrics were still in English ('Michelle' notwithstanding) and thus their songs were better than 'Bonnie and Clyde'. "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan The production ruins 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' and this has the most wonderful imagery of pretty much any Dylan number. Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 If I was separating Led Zeppelin songs into the categories of Great, Good and Average ("Hot Dog" is the only thing in their catalog that falls below average), I'd definitely drop "Dazed..." into the bottom rung. The bow playing is cool as a novelty, but I've already expressed that it's better used on "How Many More Times." Otherwise I've never been overly impressed. Then again, I've always enjoyed that bloated hard rock from the group's later days over the experimental psychedic blues of their early work. That is one of the most wretched songs ever conceived, composed, performed, recorded, released, and played. No hyperbole on my part. It's one of those little chestnuts of shit that somehow represents everything that was awful about the 1960s. Good riddance, thank fuck. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who feels that way. I think you're missing the experience of riding in the way-back of the minivan with your family as a wee youth, listening to your parents' oldies station on long drives to summer homes and county fairs. This is, of course, before the oldies format went straight to hell and started implementing late-'70s stuff and even, gasp!, 1980s music. Round these parts, it was about a seven-year skid till they flipped to sorry-ass Jack FM in 2005; the Milwaukee station from the north leg of those summer home trips took so long to stop being oldies that you didn't notice till it was too late. But yeah, that's when you forge a deep love for these songs, before you even know the names or the artists. I suppose there's no way to retroactively go about it once your music brain is hard-wired. A substitute teacher of mine in high school even presented a somewhat compelling argument that the ascension of The Jackson 5 is when Motown jumped the shark. But rubbish? Pus-shaw indeed. The first Greatest Hits album was the soundtrack to my childhood. And The Epic label era stuff is a nice precursor to Off The Wall.
