Jobs w/ Highest Amount of Douchebags

Recommended Posts

I can attest to the video store thingy. I was nice for the most part but there were times when somebody would be renting a movie and my exchanges would be along the lines of...

Me: So you're renting _____?

Customer: Yeah.

Me: .......seriously?

Customer: Um.....yeah.

*I roll my eyes*

Me: Oooookay.

Hey, I also worked at Borders. In fact, cunty assistant manager I was talking about in another thread came from my last Borders experience.

I also worked at not one, but two video stores.

Churches.

When I said this, Twisted's post said "Church's", implying the quick service chicken restaurant. My response was clever. Thanks, asshole!

Working at book stores especially, but to a lesser extent those other place, you get a natural sense of entitlement. The people who come in there are dumb as fuck (with the possible exception of the comic shops).

But especially book stores.

You're telling me. I was working at Borders when the Da Vinci Code first came out. Or rather, when the film for the book came out.

Gamestop - Not just douche bags, but I didn't realize being a "Game Advisor" gave you an incredible sense of self-worth and turned you into a cocky ass.

Hot topic - You're so goth and hardcore working for a corporate store.

American Eagle / Abercrombie / Hollister - Yea

Firedog / Geek Squad members - Again, yea.

Eh, I worked at Fry's (Grocery store) for 3 years and most of the people there were pretty cool. Well, the managers were total douches and I hated every last one of them, but the regular employees were all pretty cool. It seems like our store wasn't the only one that had terrible people with no sense of how to run a store as managers though. I heard alot about Fry's/Smiths' stores all over town being the same way.

Man, I've had three of the jobs mentioned in this thread (book store, teacher, & higher education employee). I must be some kind of uberdouche.

If it makes you feel better, I've worked for Gamestop on 3 separate occasions:

May-September 2005 - Game Adviser - What fun it is working 5-10 hours per week

May-October 2006 - Senior Game Adviser - I left on good terms the first time, so when the position of Senior Game Adviser opened up, the manager called and asked if I wanted it. I agreed to take the job mainly due to the fact that it offered Full Medical Coverage. I guess the joke was on me when I found out they killed-off Full Medical in my district for anyone that wasn't an ASM or Store Manager the week before I started.

February-May 2007 - Assistant Store Manager - This time it wasn't my decision to return to the company. I was working for Rhino Games when the buyout went through.

I'm seeing a pattern with the month of May, here.

At the one I work at it filled with:

+ "Hey I know the schedule is already up but I need so and so days off. Sorry its just the way it is."

+ "I have to work 12-8? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!"

+ "Waaaaaaah Im not feeling good!"

+ Then you have the douchebag boyfriend who waits for two hours in the store so he can go on a 10 minute break with his ugly g/f.

I see this on a day to day basis. Glad to hear there some chains out there without this.

Borders and Barnes & Noble employees have always been gracious and helpful, in my experience. Nobody at the Jewel-Osco is disagreeable or difficult. I think certain people here just bring out the worst in retail employees.

Cell phone stores, though, good lord. The worst are the mall kiosks where they repeatedly try to flag people down. They even got all up in my grill, and I move quite briskly when I'm at the mall. They're good, real good.

Borders and Barnes & Nobles are awesome. Quiet places, with few real problems to think of. If you stay far away from teenage girls, it's like heaven.

Mall cops. It must suck to have so little real authority

Not always. I've never worked at a mall (though I knew some people that did and they seemed ok) but in my experience, while you have the guards who think this is their big ticket into the police force and act like douches when they really have no authority, the majority realize this is a run out the clock and collect a cheque situation. In any security job I've had, I've revelled in the fact that anything that got too dicey required a call to the police, and once people with REAL authority showed up, I could go back to unlocking doors for building staff.

Are the sandwich artists trained to never guess / assume what a customer wants? For a period in 2006 I was going to the same Subway around the same time every Monday, getting the same basic sub (tuna on honey oat), always toasted, etc. Not once did she ever greet me like I was a regular or say "tuna today?" or anything. I always found it a bit odd.

One time a friend and I went to the Subway near the local university but the douchebag student on shift claimed they were closed while he studied.

I've known some Hot Topic employees (even briefly dated a girl who managed one) who were fine people, but of course this was away from work. They may well have turned into giant assholes the moment they clocked in.

A couple months ago, I went to a Fry's looking for the Nightmare Before Christmas on DVD. This was right before Disney re-released it on dvd but I thought it came out that week. I walked up to a worker and asked where it was and I knew when I walked up to him he was going to be a douchebag.

It was one of those peoples who even with their mouths close you can still see their teeth and gums. Like the kids in the hall character in the top left corner of this picture.

AAE71203-03.jpg

Me: "Excuse me, do you know where I can find the Nightmare Before Christmas on dvd?"

Douche: "Ah, no, we don't have it."

Me: "I thought it got re-released on dvd this week?"

Douche: "Ha, no, that's next week."

Seriously a simple "We don't have it yet. It comes out next week." would have been a great answer. I swear to God the next parted lip mother fucker who acts that way with me I'm gonna punch him in the teeth. Fuckin horse mouthed mother fuckers.

I haven't really had that much trouble with a Gamestop or a Gamecrazy before...well maybe a Gamecrazy but normally I just say something that shuts up them up really quick, but I don't think I've ever had an issue with a Gamestop. But that's mainly due to the fact when I go into a Gamestop, I go in and get what I need then leave.

Any trendy food service establishment that is just a step above fast food. Za's would have to be the worst.

And, yes, Game Stop and all other gamer stores are packed with douchebag employees.

Honestly, I've never had any complaints with the service at any of the chain bookstores I've been to. Most of the employees at places like B & N and Borders are relatively self-aware w/r/t their position in the world. They work in retail and they know that. Independently owned stores, be it book, record, or video, tend to be home to the real douches. Any of you guys ever been to Kim's Underground in NYC? Great store, but engage any of the employees in whatever fashion and they look at you as if you farted.

I do recall encountering an instance of snobbery at Borders, or at least witnessing it. I was at a store in Orlando where, in the DVD section, a display was set up called "_______'s Overrated Movie Club." This was several years back, so it had titles like Saving Private Ryan and Titanic. What was the point of that display? The guy worked in retail; it wasn't his place to put people down about their taste. (An aside: I'm surprised whatever supervisor/manager approved such a snide and flippant display. That would never have flown at the store where I worked.)

Wow, I guess I'm the third person on this board with Borders experience. I just want to chime in that, for the most part, my store is a lot of college kids and college drop-outs, along with a few retired old people or people working second jobs. The people working second jobs were the ones who were the real douchebags (with a few exceptions, obviously), as well as most of the supervisors, but not the managers.

Also, the Gamestop closest to me has some pretty cool employees. Some really nerdy guys I went to high school with, a guy who used to be my boss at Borders, and a hot goth chick.

Friend of mine who went to Tisch worked there. He wasn't bad, but he always had stories about this one guy with whom he often shared shifts. When customers would start walking up to pay for rentals, he'd do things like turn to another employee and say "I wonder when Tarantino's going to bring all those movies back" or "Remember when Ad-Rock and Ione used to come in here all the time? Too bad about them."

re: Borders/Barnes and Noble--I've actually never gotten anything but excellent customer service at either place. I get the feeling that it's a more soothing and peace-inducing retail job than, say, Walmart or Target.
