TSM 2008 Year-End Awards: Television & Film

I think we can agree, however, that Burn After Reading and Iron Man represent two different movies. One was a huge-budget boner-fest of ass kicking and special effects targeted mainly at 13 year old boys, whereas the other was another clever dark humor from the Coen Brothers. I guess I have different standards of entertainment.

I actually thought Iron Man had a lot less action then most comic book movies. If anything, it almost moved too slow at times. It was more about what it means to be able to do good in the world. Just because a movie is sold as a popcorn flick, doesn't lessen it in my eyes.

I don't disagree that Burn was a fun little movie, I just think Iron Man was a lot better movie and more entertaining.

I guess we can agree to disagree.

Wait, it wasn't sold as a popcorn movie, it was a popcorn movie. "Doing good in the world?" Bob, puh-leeze. I couldn't imagine a more hackneyed and cliche theme for a movie, and that's a supremely flimsy justification to like it. Was Spiderman I, II, The Punisher, both Incredible Hulks, the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and every other possible movie that deals with the horribly worn out GOOD V. EVIL motif uplifted by their uninspiring use of it? I think not.

There was absolutely nothing to Iron Man other than a big budget. The storyline was about as bland and predictable as they come, and even came with a healthy dose of Middle Eastern terrorists getting their asses blown away by a miniature rocket launcher! Hell-fucking-yeah!

BAR was original and clever, that much is untouchable. Hell, even the action was better than Iron Man.

Brad Pitt's polished gay mug getting blown away (ironically) in the closet and John Malkovich axing the owner of a gym to death in front of his own house?

I'll take that a couple thousand times over Jeff Bridges in a clumsy metal costume flipping over cars and falling through a building.

Last but not least, Robert Downey Jr is an insufferable actor. I can't imagine him getting through one scene without his vision being severely blurred by a wanton desire to go pick up an 8 ball and call it a day with a thousand-dollar-an-hour escort.

Fuck Iron Man.

FILM OF THE YEAR:

THE DARK KNIGHT

In no way or shape did this disappoint me at all. After all the hype, it came through. I will be watching it forever.

Runners Up: Wall-E, Frost/Nixon, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Milk, In Bruges

SURPRISE FILM OF THE YEAR

ROLE MODELS

I thought it would be crap, but, it was funny and charming. Paul Rudd is amazing.

Runners Up: Harold and Kumar Go To Guantanamo Bay

WORST FILM OF THE YEAR:

TWILIGHT

What. A. Turd. I am so pissed I watched a stream of this. Wasted my time to see what the hype was. Stupid me.

Runners Up: Sex and the City, High School Musical 3

DISAPPOINTING MOVIE OF THE YEAR:

HELLBOY 2

After Pan's Labyrinth, I thought this one would blow my mind. It just did not work for me.

Runners Up:Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Punisher:WarZone

BEST ACTOR:

HEATH LEDGER--THE DARK KNIGHT

I don't care about Main or Support designations. This is an iconic performance. Walking away from the hospital and the pencil trick alone made it my pick.

Runners Up: Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Aaron Eckhardt (The Dark Knight), WALL-E(I know, I know...)

BEST ACTRESS:

ELIZABETH BANKS--W, ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO, ROLE MODELS

I really did not see one film this year where a woman stood out. But, she played her role perfectly in all of these. I have not seen any of the Kate Winslet movies coming out, but, she would probably win if I had.

MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIE FOR NEXT YEAR:

THE WRESTLER

I don't get to see it until January 9th. I am there.

Also: Terminator IV, Watchmen

MOVIE MOMENT OF THE YEAR:

HEATH LEDGER'S JOKER AND THE HOSPITAL SCENE.

Awesome.

TELEVISION

BEST DRAMA OF THE YEAR:

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

God damn. This season ruled. I cannot wait for the finish.

Runners Up: The Shield, Burn Notice

BEST COMEDY OF THE YEAR:

IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA

I cannot begin to describe the light in my life that is this show.

Runners Up: How I Met Your Mother, The Office

BEST TELEVISION STAR, MALE:

TIE! CHARLIE DAY AND NEIL PATRICK HARRIS

In a right and just world, there would be a crossover show where Barney and Charlie hang out. It would be legen...wait for it...dary.

BEST TELEVISION STAR, FEMALE:

TIE! KATEE SACKOFF AND COLBIE SMOLDERS

Why? Because they rock their roles, and I want to become a Mormon and marry them both. Although hot sex would do.

TV MOMENT OF THE YEAR:

BECAUSE I CUT THE BRAKES! WILD CARD BITCHES! YEEEEEEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWW!

I'm sure I am forgetting tons.

Oh...I'm sorry. Did you have your own opinions, or, is that all you had to add to the discussion?

Look...I don't think it is THE GREATEST NIGHT IN OUR SPORTS HISTORY..but...as far as big blockbuster movies...it was damn near perfect. And, it was a weak year overall. Literally, my opinion, I could not find a proper female performance to give kudos to. There were some really good movies, Dark Knight was the one that I will watch the most down the line. I like Batman. I like Nolan. It was MY opinion, as is everyone's opinion on here. So...if all you have to add is a one line bitch about someone's likes, then, great...you be that guy. Personally, I like coming here and seeing what others have to say. Because sometimes, it leads to finding something great I was not aware of.

Best Horror Movie(s): Let the Right One In, Inside, The Lost

Most Pleasent Suprise: Hellboy II (I liked it more than the first one. Plus, the movie world needs more German Protoplasmic Mystics)

Yup, you are correct. It came out at the end of last year on DVD, and I got it in January. Still a favorite of mine that I saw this year though.
