Universities need to stop importing crazy murderous Asians! Doesn't anyone screen these people before they come here? While I am not intimately familiar with what it takes to chop somebody's head off, I reckon it is a lengthy, loud and messy process. Surely somebody could have stepped in?

Isn't there some bone that one would need to get through that I'd imagine a kitchen knife would take quite a while to get through? The most I can figure is shock kicked in and no one wanted to risk their own life for a corpse. I mean once the throat is slit, you'd have to apply immediate pressure to keep the person alive and I don't think a kitchen knife is going to leave a clean cut. So you are asking someone to step into a situation to save a dead body or a woman whose chance of survival was slim. It's sounds like an odd description of the situation as well. They were calmly having coffee and suddenly the dude is just removing her head? If this comes out that he asked her on a date and she said no and he "overreacted" then I don't know if I'll feel disgusted or laugh. Probably a little of both.

They could've all been 98-pound computer programmers for all we know. It's probably not like the local jiu-jitsu club was just happening to sit there. What's the normal reaction of an untrained civilian to horrific violence, after all? To run and protect your own ass. That's a common pattern in most brutal murders committed in public; the witnesses mostly all run away.

If he went through the neck, then I'm more surprised he was able to just slice through all the ligaments and muscle in the way. The bone would be the easiest part since he'd just have to hack through the disk plate in between the neck bones themselves, and obviously the spinal cord. Its pretty gruesome really.

Not to mention that the other person have to had at least fought back, or resisted somewhat. Unless the chick was an assassin, or extremely lucky, then she probably wouldn't take her down with one quick shot, no resistance, or anything. Then its a matter of cutting the head off with the knife that you guys already mentioned. All the same, this is pretty fucked up.
