Just curious as to what everyone thinks about this newest edition to the line-up...

The episode features:

-A Jay Youngblood squash

-A Sgt. Slaughter interview/squash

-A local market Ivan Koloff interview

-Sandy Scott offering to put up a $17k 1982 Cadillac in an effort to bring in new talent, which segues into a Tommy Rich highlight video

-Roddy Piper coming out to rant and rave (Offering to sell his grandmother to the Huns for 17k)... Ole Anderson and Slaughter come out as well

-Sandy Scott counters them with a highlight video of Angelo Mosca (Featuring Lou Albano in the video)

-An interview with Youngblood, Steamboat, and Jake Roberts

-A Jimmy Valiant squash

-Roddy Piper comes back out and rants on Steamboat

-Recap of a Steamboat match where Piper jumps him

-A local market interview featuring Jay Youngblood and Ray Stevens, which segues into a Jimmy Valiant interview, and then segues into a Blackjack Mulligan interview

-A Ricky Steamboat/Jake Roberts vs. The Super Destroyer/Grappler match, which ends with Piper and Ole Anderson getting involved (Sonny "Roughhouse" Fargo is the ref)

-The rest of the video of Piper jumping Steamboat from earlier is shown

All in all, there is a ton of major names on this show, and I hope they keep showing this series.

I think the thing that stands out is how much talent there was. Also think about the Madison Square Garden shows of 81, wwf looks like the minor league but were the top town because of New York. Too bad Crockett did not try a Starcade type thing in 81

Yeah they had a tremendous roster in that area back then. Much better than the WWF roster of the same time. Of course Vince would later sign all of these guys away from Crockett, but that really didn't happen until 1984-85.

I really enjoyed the first episode. I wonder why the WWE started airing episodes of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling from 1981 and not sooner?

For those that don't have WWE 24/7 Classics On Demand and are lurkers, here's a good review by Brian Rogers over on Mid Atlantic Television (blog for Mid Atlantic Gateway)

Mid-Atlantic? They're showing Mid-Atlantic? Wow, I might need to fork over the ten bucks a month and just get 24/7 now. A couple of weeks ago they were having a free preview of the service and I'd say I watched about 12+ hours of old school wrestling. Great stuff.

From what I understand, the WWE's Crockett tape footage goes back to the early-80s. I've heard that a lot of the seventies footage was taped over. This was a common practice of promoters at the time to save money. Sadly, networks would repeat this too. NBC taped over much of Johnny Carson's 60s footage, including his debut episode. Vince was one of the few to recognize the value of maintaining a tape library. I know that they have Crockett stuff going back to at least 9/9/81, because they've shown some footage of that on the Jake Roberts DVD. They also showed a clip of Crockett announcing Flair as the new World Champion on the Flair DVD. There's some classic Mid-Atlantic footage available on youtube, particularly between Flair and Steamboat.

Anyway, watched the first episode and really enjoyed it. The wrestlers and their talent are first-rate. The tag match with Steamboat and Roberts was a tremendous tag team match. Fast-paced action with all four guys bumping their assess off. Even Roberts and I was never a fan of his actual in-ring work. Not to mention it'll be a treat to watch crazy, coked-up Heel Piper in his prime. Looks like that footage of Mosca came from the WWWF since Albano was there.

Speaking of coked-up...was Jay Youngblood (great in-ring talent) high or was he always that bad when he was cutting promos?

Props for them showing the local promos. I was stunned they didn't edit out the local contact information.

Yeah... them keeping the local promos as is was what made this show stand-out for me.

I believe Superbowl I was also the victim of networks trying to save money/space as both networks that broadcast it lost their copies... luckily, NFL Films was there to document it as well.

Yeah, I've heard that about some of the early Super Bowls. I know that the original broadcast of "The Greatest Game Ever Played" between the Giants and the Colts in 58 has been lost but when ESPN did the special on it, you used the original coach's film of the game (which was about six minutes longer) and utilized local radio broadcasts along with colorized footage to put it together again.

Most of the Non-WWF Footage prior to 1980 has been lost to time. WWF footage goes back to around 1975, and but stuff from the 50's and 60's is almost non-existant. I don't believe that footage of Sammartino vs Rogers where Bruno won the belt for the first time, exists. Koloff vs Sammartino and Stasiak vs Morales don't exist on video either. It's a shame that so much of this stuff has been lost.

Just wondering but was there any reason for colorizing that 1958 NFL game? Did ESPN simply think no one would sit and watch a 50 year old B & W football game?

I guess they did it for the new fans. Although I actually liked colorizing it and I thought it did a good job bringing the game to life.

I've heard the footage of Bruno and Buddy Rogers is lost but supposedly, the audio still exists. The earliest (official) WWE footage I know about is the Pedro/Ivan title change from February 1971. I don't know if anything from Bruno's first reign still exists.

I don't know if there was even much wrestling on television in the 1960s. A bunch would have never been recorded in the first place, much less taped over. There's films of Sammartino in the 60s, but rarely full matches.

Footage from Texas Rasslin' is the oldest footage I think WWE 24/7 Classics on Demand has shown. It was from the 1950s during the month that Killer Kowalski was the Hall Of Famer of the month.

I loved that footage.
