Superman: Secret Origins by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank
Nightwing replied to Kurt Angle Mark's topic in Literature
Thank God. I like Mark Waid, but I thought Birthright was stupid, and tried too hard to integrate the Smallville stuff. Well, Superman and the Legion told us this. Actually, looking back, Infinite Crisis #6 told us this. Exactly. Geoff knows how to keep the iconic elements of a character while adding interesting twists and turns to their previously familiar background. Did it with Green Lantern, and now with a character that needed a revamp ever since IC. -
The US Economy and Current Financial Crisis

Well, considering Marvin's track record, I think we can be assured that it probably won't now. I mean, the darkies didn't even riot like he wanted them to... -
Um... it happened in Countdown... but Darkseid and Eclipso sort of turned her to the dark side with offers of power (and candy). The only reason I'm sort of reticent to talk about it is because it happened... well, in Countdown. *Throws salt over shoulder*

Sounds like a Max Payne mod.

Peggy Hill, no question. I love King of the Hill, but I often have problems watching it because she grates me so much. I want there to be an episode where Hank relentlessly beats her in front of Bobby to show him what to do with "bitches".

Dunno if you're looking for spoilers or not but the movie's replacement for the squid is considerably less lame and makes sense in the context of the story. No, no it doesn't. Actually, it makes a lot less sense, and I'm not even talking about what Edwin is. I'm officially not seeing this anymore. I was on-the-fence, since I didn't support a movie adaptation of this book, but this was the final straw. If you don't have the balls to faithfully adapt it, then don't, and this (in my opinion) is a big change. They just should have begged HBO to do a miniseries on it, because that could have worked

Barry Allen's cameo was the kicker for that entire sequence. I actually said "HOLY SHIT!" aloud when I read it. And considering where SBP ended up, I like the ending better in hindsight than I did before. Anyways, FC has had me hooked. 2 was a little more cryptic than perhaps I wanted, but 3 and 4 were pretty awesome. It doesn't feel like a conventional event at all, and I love how the New Gods are being recreated. And the Tie-Ins are great, too: Revelations is awesome, Legion of 3 Worlds is typical Johns goodness, Submit was okay but Resist was a great capstone to Rucka's run on Checkmate (God, that series just went down the hole after he left), and Rogue's has already been praised.

The US Economy and Current Financial Crisis
Nightwing replied to Cheech Tremendous's topic in Current Events
And Marvin shows just how retarded he really is. The Auto companies got caught with their pants down trying to play for the short-term to make up ground they lost years ago, and got caught. That can't be denied, but they'd normally be able to get out of such a rut if the credit companies didn't make securing loans almost impossible. If Unions really were the problem, they would have been out of business in the 80's. Comparatively speaking, the UAW is giving their workers a lot less than they previously had. And they've also cut out the "UAW Janitor" stuff a while ago, before you bring up that argument, too. -

Remember when he said he'd get all those jobs back for Detroit? I suppose this would have been his plan. Glad to see he's still a complete hypocrite outside of election seasons. Restructuring through bankruptcy won't happen, because they won't restructure. If they go bankrupt, they'll likely liquidate due to the credit market right now. And hell, let's say that they're lucky enough to actually restructure. They've been polling people, and 80% of the general public will NOT buy from a bankrupt auto maker. Yeah, that sounds like they'll really have a chance to succeed. Christ... The fact of the matter is, they're already in the process of restructuring: Ford is already on the way (As Kotzenjunge already pointed out in the other thread), GM is looking to expand into China (A place where the Japanese can't get into because of hostile Chinese tariffs and restrictions), and... well, do what you will with Chrysler. Odds are that it'll likely be part of GM soon enough. I don't mind some government oversight: This idea that "THE GOVERNMENT SHOULDN'T BE ANYWHERE!" helped get us into this mess. Reasonable government oversight will help restore confidence in the system after it ran wild. Unless we want to go the "ECONOMIC APOCALYPSE NOW!" because some conservatives suddenly want to return to "balanced budgets" after 8 years of fucking things up. -
"Real", "normal", what's the difference? I don't see how you can judge one alien to be "normal" and another "not".
-
I still find the concept of a "realistic" alien to be at odds with "real life" as we know it.
-
Because "real" aliens is not only relative, but would be harder to create a hoax around? What, are you going to put flying saucers or something? I mean, what is a "real" alien to you? I never took the "intergalactic space kraken" as being wacky. Ozymandias didn't want an alien invasion, because the longer you try and put that on, the more time people are going to look at it and examine it. What he created was more akin to a natural disaster; sudden, horrifying, and done in one shot. To me, it makes a lot more sense.

I disagree. The Squid works because it's used as a means to bring humanity together, or at least that's what I always thought of it. Sure, it killed millions, but still. The thing is, the plot calls for an event that kills millions and causes Russia and the U.S. to sort their shit out. If they at least get that, I'll be satisfied. Yes. The ending where millions of people die and humanity is brought together is important and cool and very memorable. The squid is a lame way to do it. I'm sure in the 80s it was different but looking at it today it just seems silly. What do you want it to be, a giant spider? I mean, I don't see many other ways to really do it without making it "lamer".

The US Economy and Current Financial Crisis
Nightwing replied to Cheech Tremendous's topic in Current Events
Oh, shut up. Anyone with a brain realizes that this is only temporary, and I highly doubt the Big Three are going to suddenly forget everything that's happened over the last few years and suddenly go back go putting out gas-guzzlers. The market is no longer there; some people are stupid, but most people don't want to get stuck with a 10 MPG car again when gas hits $3.50 again. I still think it's fucking stupid for these Congressmen to talk about the Auto Industry like it's the God-damned 90's or something. American Auto companies are a lot more competitive, and with China opening up (And putting big penalties on Japanese cars), it's foolish to kill the auto industry. Shit, it's not like Chrysler didn't pay back their bailout... -
Sorry, I've been reading Trinity, so I have the Crime Syndicate of Amerika on the brain. But, to be honest, the look is far more important than the name.

Man, this just looks worse and worse to me. The fact that Owlman looks fit and young really irks me, too: I mean, his entire story is supposed to be him as a middle-aged man, looking back as his golden days.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Extreme Breaking & Entering + Dee's Spanish = Pure Win. -
I lost it when he was looking at the neighbor, yelled at him, and then it suddenly did a quick-cut to him slapping the neighbor before quick-cutting back to him going into the house. It was like the opposite of a Family Guy joke, since it was done in a few seconds and actually funny.

I agree. They're playing lazy and not winning games they should have, and a lot of it has to do with their penalty kill: They have a ridiculous amount of 5 on 3s occuring, which is throwing off their average. This is both good and bad: It might mean that their real PK power is not being shown, but it also shows that they aren't playing tight and are grabbing/holding to try and keep up. It's hard to watch, really. I'm considering going on a 2-week vacation from them and hope that they get better when I'm not watching (Sort of a "Watched Pot Never Boils" superstition).
-
An interesting development in the Auto Industry crisis: Apparently Obama is looking to appoint an "Auto Czar" to oversee the bailout of the Auto Companies. From Politico I think that's a great idea, and it'll go a long way to give people faith that he isn't just tossing people cash and that he's going to clamp down on the self-inflicted wounds of the auto industry.
-
Moving back away from the Auto Industry, RoboJerk talked about Robert Gates possibly being held over from the Bush Administration. Apparently, he is getting a bit of resistance on that. I'm good with Gates, though Hagel as a bipartisan choice really makes sense for me as well.
-
FX does, as well. I know that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is uncensored. On-topic: Who had the best coverage of the campaign season? Who had the worst coverage? And which network had the biggest gaffe of the year?

Do you know anyone who doesn't advertise their product? People aren't complete sheep; they wanted those sorts of status symbol type cars. It's not like the Automakers brainwashed them. They have advertising departments to advertise their products. People didn't care about gas mileage until things skyrocketed under Bush, which then made them say "Well, it's your fault!" when they were the ones they were catering to. I'm not taking the full blame off the Auto Industry, which has been fighting like a little bitch against CAFE standards for the longest time, but I disagree with this "The Auto Industry led themselves into this" when American attitudes towards gas was a big factor. I'm almost dead-sure that you're wrong, and that it's the other way around, like hybrids. I don't think that's something that a person like you would forget. Iran actually has a rather large student movement with fairly liberal values. It'd be great to see that situation just work itself out, though that's "Mission: Accomplished" levels of optimism.
-
I applauded McCain for saying that the jobs weren't coming back, if you are willing to search through the hundreds of posts for it. I'm not idiot. I don't think that the Auto Industry is going to become as big as it once was. But just abandoning the industry? To me, that's stupid, and the numbers indicate as such. Christ, do I have to say this again? It's what the consumer wanted. I understand that it was short-sighted, but to act like they were doing this despite people wanting the gas-efficient cars, you have to recognize American consumers for wanting these sorts of cars. The sudden skyrocket in gas prices killed them, and they've been actually working hard to get back to where they were (They've actually jumped a great deal across the board when it comes to the quality of cars). They've been putting a lot of development into hybrids and alternative energy cars, I doubt they're going to do a fucking reverse course now, so if you'd just shut the fuck up with a stupid, unconfirmed and (from a manufacturing standpoint) impossible rumor, it'd be nice. Secondly, you realize that this drop in gas is not a regular gas drop, and shouldn't be compared to what you are talking about. We have gas at about $1.99 in Detroit (Likely to be lower after they remove the 19 cent gas tax), something that hasn't happened since gas started skyrocketing. So before you start up with your "OMG REVELATION", take into account that this gas drop is not the traditional one and shouldn't be taken as such, though I wouldn't bank on it lasting much more than a year or so (if that). If I sound a little irate, it's because I've been dealing with so many people who are just ready to say "Fuck off, Auto Industry" without realizing that it's going to do serious permanent damage to the US Economy. You think it's bad now? Letting go of the Auto Industry is basically going to put manufacturing into a fucking nosedive.
