    24 - Season 6

Jack's gone. Shot his boy in the throat to save a terrorist's life, hardly thought twice about it, and then got to watch the apocalypse while he threw up all over the grass. I'm gonna be really interested to see what happens with him. The last thing I want is more Jack-works-with-CTU stuff. I have seriously no idea how Jack is going to react to what happened at the end of the hour, so kudos to the creators for making him a bit of a mindfuck upon his return from torture city.

My god, it's the lamest fight of all time.

I'm pretty sure they're more or less the Cutco of advertising.

    2007 NFL Playoffs

Oh god, not again. Well, I think Indy's going to savage them in the dome next week--the Patriots got two gigantic breaks this weekend (the muff and the fumbled INT) along with a ton of dropped balls. Not much leads me to believe that it'll be too different from the midseason result.

"Going for a headbutt"? Are you kidding me? That was just taunting, and then the New England player took a cheap shot. Should have been offsetting personal fouls. These refs aren't as cool as my new hero, Overdramatic Ref.

Oh boy. Not a good call, Mikey.

    Children of Men

Well, I'd finish watching it first. That should answer just about everything. But:

    Jay-Z vs. Linkin Park

"Thanks to Deon Dark for making this!" Wasn't Bob Van Dam, this here poster, once named Deon? And an idiot? I smell fish, along with a terrible fucking "remix."

    2007 NFL Playoffs

This ref is so awesome. He milks every penalty for the ultimate dramatic effect.

    2007 NFL Playoffs

It'd be absolutely hilarious if this year's Colts team was the one to make it to the Super Bowl. After the "they'll be undefeated!" and "Peyton sets the TD record!" teams getting spanked, I'd love to see the "we're...average!" Colts be the ones to get it done.

    2007 NFL Playoffs

The Ravens fans in my office are gonna be fucking pissed on Monday. The defense played fine, but the Colts' defense played better. Look at this: Indianapolis is going to be in the AFC Championship game having allowed only 14 points in the playoffs. How completely and utterly unexpected is that?

"Ed Reed is a human ball magnet" is my favorite bit of announcer commentary so far.

    2007 NFL Playoffs

This is the one thing that had me thinking the Colts might pull this out--Wayne against Rolle. Sure, take Harrison out of the game, but Rolle gets beat on way too many coverages and Manning-to-Wayne can make him pay for that. My call was 27-20 Ravens, incidentally.

    Motel Hell

Oh, awesome. It takes all kind of critters... This could be marvelous.

    2006 top 10

Children of Men and The Departed are my two faves, each on a level well above anything else I saw. The Descent was fantastic too. Hostel was hilarious and I've come to enjoy seeing it whenever I get the chance. Borat was also hilarious, but was supposed to be, so kudos on that. I liked Hard Candy an awful lot, but I've gone a little soft on it after thinking about how I would have preferred it to be a bit more ambiguous. I also enjoyed the hell out of The Prestige, which was pretty straightforward but still worked superbly for what it was.

    Let's edit bloated double albums

I'm assuming that's the live "Sunday Bloody Sunday" from the movie? Good list altogether. Anything that excises "Helter Skelter" makes the album twice as good right off the bat. I kind of like the cheesy church-choir version of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," but mostly in the same way I like "okay Edge, play the blues!"

    4,000 dead Americans

This speech gives me a good spot to relay some info from my friends and coworkers living and working in Iraq (I work for a contractor in DC). This is all purely anecdotal, but you might find it interesting, darkly amusing, or really disappointing. -Extra troops in Anbar is probably a fairly useless effort. You don't win Anbar by sending in troops; you win Anbar by renting the services and support of particular tribes, essentially paying them to not kill you and to kill other people instead. Money, not bodies, gets you into Anbar. -Most high-ranking decision-makers, particularly those at Camp Victory, have never seen or met a real-live Iraqi. -Every gym at a military facility, of which there are hundreds, is staffed by no less than 4 uniformed personnel who sit at the entrance to make sure coalition personnel are wearing the right footwear when they work out. That and logging how many people come into the gym is their only job. -Attacks on Forward Operating Bases throughout the provinces have decreased. This isn't because our troops are winning and stopping the insurgency; it's because the insurgents don't view us as a threat and know we won't shoot at them if they don't shoot at us first.

    Ripken, Gwynn elected to HOF

I believe I remember this, especially Molitor's "I was breaking world series records when he was still a rookie!" Such ass, that Paul Molitor. Edit: I typed "ass" instead of "sass" there, but I think I'm leaving it.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - The Bowls

Yeah, I love it. Even if my streak of big-game chokes is now at a steady 4 and counting. Woo woo! Much appreciated for endless collating and formulizing.

Comments which don't warrant a thread.

Strange. Is the piano thing something new with him, or just a weird experiment? When I saw him open for the (surprise, you can't escape!) Arcade Fire, he did all the sampling and loops live and it was actually really cool.

    iPhone and iPod

It's a phone, widescreen video iPod, and camera all in one. Oh, and it runs OSX. Jeez. I'm waiting to see what the capacity is, though I'm expecting it to only be nano-sized/flash memory, like 8 GB.

    Book recommendations

I read Blood Wedding (in English) for a 20th century drama course in grad school. It's pretty cool. Like, very fucked up and surreal, if I recall. It was sort of a testing site for his "Play and the theory of the Duende" concept, which was an artistic manifesto he wrote arguing that art's greatness comes from a few different things, namely connection with your nation's soil and history, awareness of death, and an understanding that reason has limits and that weird shit sometimes happens outside those boundaries. Lorca's a pretty neat guy.
