Well then Blindness is no longer my choice for worst of 08.
-
I reserve hate for a select couple of movies. I hadn't seen any of those other movies you listed. I think I watched Strange Wilderness in 08, but I don't know if it was from 08 or 07. If the former, then Strange Wilderness is my pick for worst of the year. Also, for the Best Song category I'm torn between "The Wrestler" and "Gran Torino," as they're both really good. I'm actually leaning more toward "Gran Torino" at the moment.

Agreed. There were some good things, but the bad just overtook them. I'm sure if I saw more movies then it wouldn't be my pick for worst movie of the year, but I went in with such high expectations. And if Bob's idea goes through, I can't wait for the movie where people can't smell anymore. The one where they can't feel could make for a right fucked up movie.
-
The second of Bob's spoiler tags is what made me think the movie was going to be something great. That scene was remarkably pulled off. But as for the ending
-
I can't recall an ending I hated so completely in any recent movie. The movie had some good will built up from the "give us your women" segment being really effective and for the fact that they at least tried to do something interesting visually. Then they go and throw out one of the worst endings I've ever seen and shoot it all to shit. You mean for the Blindness ending?
-
Blindness was the worst movie I saw last year. The only person I'd even consider nominating in that movie is the guy who played the villain. Speaking of which, I briefly considered the youngest version of Jamal's brother in Slumdog for supporting actor, but went with Wright instead.
-
She was only in one scene, yes, but I think it was the best scene in the movie in terms of the writing and acting. I could get behind her character more than the others. Yeah, that credit should probably go to the writing, but I thought she made the most of the screentime she had and can't think of anybody who I would nominate over her.

I won't bother with predictions, but here's what I'd pick: Best Picture: The Wrestler The Dark Knight In Bruges Let The Right One In Slumdog Millionaire Best Leading Actor: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler Colin Farrell, In Bruges Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon Josh Brolin, W. Best Leading Actress: Meryl Streep, Doubt Lina Leandersson, Let The Right One In Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road Angelina Jolie, Changeling Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight Ralph Fiennes, In Bruges Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt Jeffrey Wright, W. Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road Best Supporting Actress: Clémence Poésy, In Bruges Marissa Tomei, The Wrestler Viola Davis, Doubt Amy Adams, Doubt Elizabeth Banks, W. If Ledger doesn't win we riot!
-
Excellent movie, and I didn't find the acting quite cringe inducing, but during the scenes with the gangs and Toad I did find myself wondering when Clint was gonna be on screen again.
-
I actually thought Penn was fairly disappointing in Milk. In some parts he was pretty solid but there were times when he was flat out not very good, Brolin and Hirsch (sp?) were way better in that movie than Penn.
-
In terms of content, yeah, it was fairly standard, but I liked some of the developments later in the movie (though they fizzled off and the movie ended well after it should have), and the acting was fantastic, especially Michael Shannon. It's not top 10 good, but I still dug it.
-
Shotgun Stories is on my Netflix queue and is one of the movies I really wanted to see in theaters last year. I've been a big fan of the guy ever since Bug.
-
Is he also gonna be mad at The Wrestler for having Mickey Rourke steal his career revival thunder?
-
I saw a stream of it, but it's playing at one of the arthouse theaters here so I'll probably go see it again, it's still one of the three best vampire movies I've seen. Revolutionary Road was quite good, Michael Shannon stole the movie.
-
Not being nitpicky, just something I would've liked to have happened.
-
If I don't have any particular status update to make I'll just steal a song quote. My last two were "Stephen brainstorms, you brainstorm, but brilliance needs a good editor" and "Stephen ain't got no heart to give away."
-
I went 3 for 3 with the acting category, with Ledger, Farrell, and Rourke all winning.
-
except that he thanked everybody, including his dogs, but the wrestlers. At least thank Afa. But yeah, I'm glad he won, every actor that I was pulling for won.
-
It was little plastic army men.
-
I thought his motivation was a little too typical. It was very good and did an excellent job of getting me caught up in the story, but the questions tying into his backstory was far more interesting than anything else in the movie.
-
I always like the surprise participants, like when Mr. Perfect returned in the Rumble, or Haku.
-
Langella was amazing, Sheen as well, to a lesser extent. Revised top 10: 1: The Wrestler 2: The Dark Knight 3: In Bruges 4: Let the Right One In 5: Slumdog Millionaire 6: Wall E 7: Frost/Nixon 8: Gran Torino 9: Doubt 10: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
-
Gran Torino only opened here Friday and the other two are playing at way out of the way theaters. BTW, Frost/Nixon is definitely on the list.
-
I'm seeing Slumdog Millionaire tonight, Frost/Nixon tomorrow, and Gran Torino on Tuesday, so my top 10 will probably be updated soon.
