A New York 12 year old sued for file swapping
kkktookmybabyaway replied to Steve J. Rogers's topic in Current Events
For those that care, the lawsuit has been taken care of: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid...ic_11&printer=1 WASHINGTON - A 12-year-old girl in New York who was among the first to be sued by the record industry for sharing music over the Internet is off the hook after her mother agreed Tuesday to pay $2,000 to settle the lawsuit, apologizing and admitting that her daughter's actions violated U.S. copyright laws. The hurried settlement involving Brianna LaHara, an honors student, was the first announced one day after the Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites) filed 261 such lawsuits across the country. Lawyers for the RIAA said Brianna's mother, Sylvia Torres, contacted them early Tuesday to negotiate. "We understand now that file-sharing the music was illegal," Torres said in a statement distributed by the recording industry. "You can be sure Brianna won't be doing it anymore." Brianna added: "I am sorry for what I have done. I love music and don't want to hurt the artists I love." The case against Brianna was a potential minefield for the music industry from a public relations standpoint. The family lives in a city housing project on New York's Upper West Side, and they said they mistakenly believed they were entitled to download music over the Internet because they had paid $29.99 for software that gives them access to online file-sharing services. Even in the hours before the settlement was announced, Brianna was emerging as an example of what critics said was overzealous enforcement by the powerful music industry. The top lawyer for Verizon Communications Inc. charged earlier Tuesday during a Senate hearing that music lawyers had resorted to a "campaign against 12-year-old girls" rather than trying to help consumers turn to legal sources for songs online. Verizon's Internet subsidiary is engaged in a protracted legal fight against the RIAA over copyright subpoenas sent Verizon customers. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., also alluded to Brianna's case. "Are you headed to junior high schools to round up the usual suspects?" Durbin asked RIAA President Cary Sherman during a Senate Judiciary hearing. Durbin said he appreciated the piracy threat to the recording industry, but added, "I think you have a tough public relations campaign to go after the offenders without appearing heavy-handed in the process." Sherman responded that most people don't shoplift because they fear they'll be arrested. "We're trying to let people know they may get caught, therefore they should not engage in this behavior," Sherman said. "Yes, there are going to be some kids caught in this, but you'd be surprised at how many adults are engaged in this activity." -

I saw a segment on FAUX NEWS LOL 2003 where they said that those extra seats will make $1-2 million a season and already have a long waiting list. I'm just waiting for the first lush to fall trying to catch a ball...

For the people (or should I say person) going OMG this is on FAUX NEWS LOL 2003 so everything must be rigged, isn't this debate co-sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus Institute?...

Regarding Fenway, what do you think about those seats atop the Green Monster? It looks different, but doesn't bother me...

I recently brushed off the dust to this PS2 game and started playing it again. I used to play the Gauntlet series all the time in the aracde and I could get quite far on one quarter. My personal fav. is the Wizard. Sure he's weak, but he's fast and has the best magic. I really don't care for any of the newer Dark Legacy characters, although I liked the newer worlds that came with them, especially the Dream World. Anybody else?...

Unless you get the government to bail out your company. Anyway, upon reading your post, Dames, the only thing that stuck out at me was how you're comparing yourself to your friends. Forget that. I never understood the purpose of trying to make as much/more money than the people you know. As long as you can pay your bills, put some in the bank and have a little left over, you're doing fine. My advice, for what it's worth: Before you go into more debt, figure out what you want to do with your life as best you can. If that means going to a community college for a year or so, then transferring, so be it. If that means going into the military and having Marney as your boss, so be it...

Just read the PNC review. A few thoughts: "The Pirates re-signed Andy Van Slyke instead of Barry Bonds." There was no way Bonds was ever going to stay a Pirate, and the people here loved Van Slyke, who was a good player until he got hurt in St. Louis. "The Pirates have this indefensible policy where they slap a $2.75 charge on every ticket purchased over the phone or the Internet. That's not a TicketMaster charge, that's the Pirates' charge if you buy the ticket through them (there is no charge if you buy the ticket at the stadium). So that $14 bleacher ticket is really $16.75." I guess they call it the Ticket-Purchase-Privilege-Fee, to go along with the county's Occupational-Privilege-Tax. "Bathrooms: Clean, plentiful and the lines were so short it was as if they were showing "Gigli" inside." That's because nobody goes to the games. "Scoreboard: The main scoreboard is just fine but the out-of-town scoreboard is what really makes this spectacular. In addition to showing you the score, inning and pitchers for each game, it also shows you how many outs and how many runners are on base and where they are. This is the next best thing to having Harold Reynolds, Peter Gammons and Bobby V updating you from the wall." Well, you gotta have distractions from the actual play that's going on the field in front of you. Ahh, PNC Park, the best stadium tax money can buy...

Too bad the Pirates are a joke of a team and the stadium is named after one of the most evil institutions known to man. Otherwise I'm sure it's a great place to take the family -- after you mortgage the house in order to pay for everything. I'll never go there based on principle. After taxpayers told city "leaders" that they didn't want to build new stadiums they did anyway under the promise that it will revive the region. Now the city's broke...
