The buy rate for Wrestlemania 19 would seem to dispute that theory. Yes, there will be a set number of people who will buy Wrestlemania no matter what, but you'll get a larger number of buys by putting on matches that a greater number of people will pay to see. Wrestlemania 19 only got a low buyrate because it was in Seattle. And because of the War in Iraq. And because of the popularity of Spongebob. And people didn't buy Booker T as a credible challenger. And Fabolous got arrested and couldn't do his freestyle battle with Cena. And Angle was a bad heel. And Lesnar wasn't ready. And they didn't promote Hulk/Vince enough. What are you HTQ, a mark?

This thread's title reminds me of something.

I think the main point is that Austin shouldn't have been portrayed as a comedy character. But then, at that point that's how almost everyone was being portrayed as WWE moved to incorporate more comedy* into their shows. *I remember around this time the Torch reporting that Vince McMahon did not like to use the word "comedy" in reference to that element of his programs, rather referring to it behind the scenes as "humor" or "ha-ha".

Who watches a show just to see skits? The ratings went up because of the beginning of the WWF/WCW feud. The Invasion PPV also did well because of the early buzz surrounding the feud and possibly because of the Austin face turn tease they did the week before. (At least, I assume that's the reason because Invasion had a freakin' terrible lineup. But I'm sure 600,000 people didn't spend $30 just because of some comedy skits.)
