Really? He's a shoo-in in my mind. Do you think the spitting incident will keep him out next year? Seems kind of silly in light of all the guys not getting in because of PEDs. With the arbitrary nature of why a writer does or does not vote for a guy makes me think without a doubt that some will not vote for him, at least on the first ballot, due to the spitting incident. It won't matter them about him becoming friends with the umpire later, baseball writers never let facts get in the way of their own perceptions or opinions. Also I don't think Alomar will be looked at as an "inner circle" candidate like RICKEY~ was or Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn were in 2007. For a recent example of a second baseman and how they faired, Ryne Sandberg didn't get in on the first ballot (barely got in on the second) and he was a former MVP with a squeaky clean image. Now I wouldn't be surprised if Alomar does it get in on the first ballot but it will be close. In fact there's an outside chance the writers will fail to elect someone next year. Dawson is the only other player who has a shot but the 40+ votes he needs is a lot to make up in one year.
-
In case anyone was wondering the biggest names to join next year's ballot are Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin, Edgar Martinez, and Fred McGriff. Out of the four I think only Alomar has a shot next year but I don't think he'll get in on the first ballot. Larkin should get in at some point but the lack of support of Alan Trammell over the years makes me doubt that will happen. Really? I mean, why bother? Pedro Gomez was one of them. Some writers do always vote ten players and if they want to throw in someone who was a favorite of there's that is fine. Gomez though had three open spots on his ballot yet elected to pick Bell over the likes Blyleven, Raines, and McGwire.
-
28 voters ended up leaving RICKEY~ off the ballot. No other first ballot players received enough votes to stay on the ballot. Both McGwire and Raines lost ten votes this year. Player Total Votes Percentage Rickey Henderson 511 94.8% Jim Rice 412 76.4% Andre Dawson 361 67.0% Bert Blyleven 338 62.7% Lee Smith 240 44.5% Jack Morris 237 44.0% Tommy John 171 31.7% Tim Raines 122 22.6% Mark McGwire 118 21.9% Alan Trammell 94 17.4% Dave Parker 81 15.0% Don Mattingly 64 11.9% Dale Murphy 62 11.5% Harold Baines 32 5.9% Mark Grace 22 4.1% David Cone 21 3.9% Matt Williams 7 1.3% Mo Vaughn 6 1.1% Jay Bell 2 0.4% Jesse Orosco 1 0.2% Ron Gant 0 0% Dan Plesac 0 0% Greg Vaughn 0 0%

Posting the offseason thread for college football now so I don't forget until May like I did last year. Here's a list of non-traditional, non-conference games between I-A schools for next season (games between 2008 bowl teams are bolded), although I probably missed a few. Here's a link for a list of schools who still have open spots on their 2009 schedule. I'm the furthest thing from a fratboy so you can always feel confident in giving me your support. I'm not very familiar with mellow and he's probably not very familiar with me either, but it does seem just based on the seeding I'm in trouble this round. So I'll go ahead and point out possibly the most important contribution I've ever made to this board was this past September when I introduced you all to this: Now credit goes to Agent of Oblivion for making it the symbol of joy that posters want to show when their particular favorite sports team has accomplished something of grandeur. As expected, Jeff Jagodzinski has been fired by Boston College AD Gene DiFilippo due to him interviewing for the Jets' head coach position. How dare any coach think of leaving an elite college football institution like Boston College for an NFL job? He should be grateful to even step foot on their campus let alone coach the team. With anything there's always more to the story than the general public knows and I don't follow BC closely enough to know if Jagodzinski was a good coach or not but this whole situation seems rather silly.
-
For the first time ever the Bored Bowl will go down to a tiebreak as AboveAverage484 and UZI Suicide are dead locked at 20-20. AA484 guessed 72 points and UZI guessed 70 points for the BCS Championship.

Hell hasn't quite frozen over but it is getting colder as Jason Giambi is returning to Oakland. Contract is reportedly just one-year, $4 million and an option for 2010 at $6.25 million with a $1.25 million buyout. I really wasn't thrilled when the rumors started about him possibly coming back especially since he wanted a three-year contract but this is a fantastic deal at those numbers. This means after a disastrous rookie season, Daric Barton will begin the year in Triple-A.

The Ibanez signing looks ever worse for the Phillies now. Improve offense? No. Improve defense? No, which was really hard to not do when replacing Burrell. Get younger? No. Get cheaper? No.

Just in case anyone thinks this will just be your typical mediocre NBA on ESPN telecast, Dick Vitale will be calling the game. You've been warned.
