  1. -------------------------------- http://news.independent.co.uk/digital/news...sp?story=434778 Texting blamed for summer movie flops By Andrew Gumbel 18 August 2003 In Hollywood, 2003 is rapidly becoming known as the year of the failed blockbuster, and the industry now thinks it knows why. No, the executives are not blaming such bombs as The Hulk, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle or Gigli on poor quality, lack of originality, or general failure to entertain. There's absolutely nothing new about that. The problem, they say, is teenagers who instant message their friends with their verdict on new films - sometimes while they are still in the cinema watching - and so scuppering carefully crafted marketing campaigns designed to lure audiences out to a big movie on its opening weekend. "In the old days, there used to be a term, 'buying your gross,' " Rick Sands, chief operating officer at Miramax, told the Los Angeles Times. "You could buy your gross for the weekend and overcome bad word of mouth, because it took time to filter out into the general audience." But those days are over, because the technology of hand-held text-message devices has drastically cut down the time it takes for movie-goers to tell their friends that a heavily promoted summer action movie is a waste of time and money. Five years ago, when summer movies were arguably just as bad as they are now, the average audience drop-off between a film's opening weekend and its second weekend was 40 per cent. This summer, it has been 51 per cent. In some cases, the drop-off has started between the film's opening on a Friday night and the main screenings on Saturday. The upshot: unsuccessful films disappearing from cinemas so fast that there is no time for second opinions. A 56 per cent drop over the first week of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was not what the studio moguls had expected. As Arnold Schwarzenegger himself might say, hasta la vista, baby. ---------------------------------- You'd think they could have come up with a better excuse then this.
  2. Bob Probert
  3. LT...and he was still pretty bad
  4. "Day One" was a disapointment. And the worst of the series. But it's such a great season that the rest more then make up for it
  5. The best show on tv is going to rerun season 2 (maybe better then season 1) on Monday August 25th on FX. Same deal as the season 1 reruns, 1 episode a night for 13 nights. Will either be on at 9pm or 10pm (I've heard both)
  6. He's at the end of season 2 and in some of season 3...the Groo rules.
  7. Was anyone else pissed off when they got rid of Spoiler (Highlight to Read): Groo I know he wasn't a major character, but I liked him.
  8. Rock on. And hurry up people...I want to read these things. All the good seasons were gone before I knew it was picking time
  9. 2 McMahons on Raw...2 McMahons on Smackdown...when does the madness end.
  10. Well we know he's losing for sure. They'll probably drop the feud after this. The Dudleys are likely to win the tag belts. I'll say IC title, I like Christian and all, but the belt's boring right now.
  11. hmmm...me too...must have reciently changed it
  12. cheater! where'd ya scam the artical?
  13. I actually have the Abdullah toy myself
  14. It was just a take on John 3:16, Dudley's mark. (which I was as well) hell...Austin was in ECW late 95, maybe he stole it from there.
  15. I heard he "lost weight" before his last comback. And although he appeared a tad smaller he sucked just as much
  16. I stand by my "fuck Conner with a rusty spoon" take

  18. It looks like Gigli has been pulled completly from theaters. It's not listed as one of the top 100 grossing films of the week. and the-numbers.com doesn't even have it listed as being out a 3rd week.
  19. Someone did the motions and everything, actor is the right word.
  20. Least he won't be around to stink up Smackdown
  21. Why? I know they have him under a big (stupid) contract, so they feel like they gotta use him. But unless he's romancing old ladies he's completely useless on tv.
  22. I saw a little bit of it when it was on, but I was only 8/9ish, so I don't remember it. I'd love to check it out.
  23. Dunno, I might agree with that...although I'm a major mark for season 4...so people tend not to take me seriously. 5 loses points cause the debut of Dawnnoying.
