  1. I agree with Czech. This sort of thread is MUCH better done as open debate. Besides, I'd be completely useless evaluating hockey teams beyond looking at win/loss records. I can't see selecting national teams as part of this sort of thing. I think a team has to play in a valid professional season to qualify. Two things to consider in a debate beyond simple win/loss and postseason records. One is the quality of the league, the second is long term success. In the case of the former, let's take an obvious example. The 1884 St. Louis Maroons went 94-19 in the Union Association. This is by far the best winning percentage ever posted in a major league. However, it was a weak league, when baseball was an undeveloped sport. The same team essentially joined the National League the next season and finished last. Along the same line, there is a timeline argument to consider. Now, players in the past would measure up to players of today because they would have access to the same training methods. But often earlier leagues were undeveloped and not as competitive. Two-way players existed in the NFL not because they were superior athletes, but because the leagues were easier to dominate. This is not an integration argument. If you look at today's game, professional and amateur leagues are highly structured, with the best players filtered into the highest leagues. In an earlier era, the system was not as defined, and many MLB caliber stars would make just as much money starring for minor league teams. Long term records are important in separating true talent from the one year wonders. The 1984 Tigers went 104-58 and dominated the postseason. But they only won one other division title the entire decade. A team doesn't need to win back-to-back championships necessarily, but they should post records at or near the top of their completion continuously.
  2. Matches only.
  3. Perhaps a duel foreign version. There were two versions of Dracula, to account for one example.
  4. Coming up with a list of the Phillies' Top 30 prospects, a step ahead of Baseball America. 1. Carlos Carrasco, RHP 2. Jason Donald, SS 3. Michael Taylor, OF 4. Dominic Brown, OF 5. 5. If they tried to put down the timeline from 1997-02, the dvd would have come with a booklet.
  6. Just to clarify something Enigma wrote, the $25,000 deposit was actually from the National Wrestling Alliance. That came from the days of Lou Thesz.
  7. History of the Intercontinental title is out. Yes, I got the Buddy Roberts edition. That'll be as valuable as a two page insert can get (not very). A lot of duplicate matches but I believe this is the first DVD appearance of both Savage/Steamboat and Warrior/Rude from Summerslam '89, not counting the anthologies.
  8. I figured Edge/Jeff, Cena/Batista and HHH/Undertaker were likely directions. Oddly, they ran HHH/Undertaker the last time they were in the Astrodome too.
  9. George Harrison is the source of one of my all time favorite gags. "Hi Homer. I'm George Harrison." "Oh my god. OH MY GOD! Where did you get that brownie?!" Lance Murdoch is probably the best unpicked character.
  10. I can't wait until they play for the Indianapolis Indians myself.
  11. No Holds Barred: The Match http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD2BGkulQaQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpQPBmQ1mAg The only other matches Zeus wrestled were tag matches at Summerslam and Survivor Series. He never wrestled a singles match.
  12. This. When people spout drivel and filth, they simply are not worth my time.
  13. I'm with Bob on this one. I'm missing why I should be so outraged.
  14. Worth it just to hear Mr. Burns call U2, "wankers."
  15. Honestly, I think this is brilliant by WWE. They have people scouring the internet all day for news leading into a PPV. Exploitation? Jeff was suspended twice for drug use. It's hardly like dicking around with the legacy of a dead wrestler.
  16. Weird Al Yankovic
  17. Real surprise trade here. The Phillies have traded Greg Golson to the Texas Rangers for John Mayberry. Golson was a toolsy prospect who was showing some baseball ability at AA. Mayberry is a career .255 hitter in the minor leagues, and a lot of that accumulated in hitters' parks. He's a huge right handed power hitter though (6'6"), who can play left field. Baseball America before the season remarked that "he could be an everyday big league right fielder who hits 35 home runs." Obviously the Phillies acquired him with an eye towards replacing Pat Burrell, possibly in a platoon role.
  18. All the time in smaller promotions. Didn't Lance Russell pull double duty in Memphis? And maybe Gene Okerlund in the AWA.
  19. Putting out the movie with the Savage/Zeus vs. Hogan/Beefcake cage match as an extra seems like a natural move.
  20. Blyleven actually won 20 games in 1973. I get the idea though. Blyleven suffers coming from an era where many pitchers won 250-300 games. He is in close proximity to Tommy John and Jim Kaat, neither of whom are in the Hall. Blyleven is better than those two. When it comes to Mussina though, that's really an insurmountable winning percentage. There is not a single eligible pitcher with that high a percentage and less than 200 wins who is not in the Hall. Mussina has 270.
  21. Such as? Mussina's career win/loss record is 270-153. That's a .638 winning percentage. There is no pitcher in baseball even CLOSE to that kind of performance who is not in the Hall of Fame.
  22. Don't know if I like this deal that much, but I'm willing to give it a chance. Coco Crisp is not exactly an all-world talent, but on a team that relies on Ellsbury and Drew in the outfield, he had a lot of value. It was clear last year that Jacoby wasn't ready for the big show and Drew is always an injury risk. Having a starting-caliber CF on the bench was always nice as a fall-back option. The one thing I will say is that this gives the team a lot of flexibility. While they now must find a competent 4th OF, they have the set-up man they've been looking for. This allows them to move Masterson or Buchholz in a trade for a C. It also freed up about $5 million. Don't know if that's just going in the pot to sweeten the offer to Burnett or what, but it's a decent sum of money. Personally, I'm always pleased when a starting caliber player moves to a place where he has a clear job.
  23. What is it with Philadelphia and crappy PPVs? King of the Ring '95 and Wrestlemania XV were held there as well. Six PPVs in total, and three of them were absolutely terrible.
