They hit .183 actually. Derek Jeter's game winning home run was his only RBI in the entire series. If the Yankees won that series, I would have never tolerated any bitching about the 1960 World Series ever again.

Because the St. Louis Cardinals suffered a horrific collapse in the postseason. Rick Ankiel came up with a sudden case of Steve Blass disease. Garret Stephenson suffered a serious elbow injury in the previous series and missed the next year. On top of that, the Mets' top pitchers were lefties Al Leiter and Mike Hampton, and the Cardinals' top hitters were Will Clark (lefty), Jim Edmonds (lefty), J.D. Drew (lefty), Fernando Vina (lefty), and Ray Lankford (lefty). The Mets ran into a dream matchup that year in the NLCS.

Sure, there was some interest. But the 2000 Yankees were an 87 win team, and the Mets were a wild card entrant. The Yankees were better than their record, but the two teams were frankly not of high caliber. And the Yankees disposed of the Mets fairly easily, in five games. By that point, we had seen three consecutive world series go five games or less.
-
Quite simply, the Yankees imploding is more interesting than the Yankees winning. The 1999 and 2000 World Series were dull, dull, dull. Suddenly they lose badly to the Angels in 2002, flop versus the Fish in 2003, and are shocked in 2004 by the Red Sox. Those stories were interesting.

I had a prediction contest at my other board, and almost to a man everyone is picking Gatti. Maybe it is just me, but I think Mayweather is clearly the superior fighter. I'll be shocked if Gatti wins.

This is almost making me long for the days of Anglesault.

So we got him the blog, but what about the shit he asked for?

By the way, for those of you who love manipulating meaningless statistics, over 2/3rds of Jeter's career home runs have come with the bases empty!
-
When I dismissed Giambi's home run, it was a cautionary tale that it does not mean a resurgance to old form for Giambi. I didn't mean to dismiss his accomplishment. In this case as well, it is nice to see Jeter finally come through in the clutch. Maybe now he can get the monkey off his back.

Actually, I am listening to the game on XM Radio. Athletics' announcers Bill King and Ken Korac are a pleasure to listen to. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Like a Red Sox fan force to listen to Charley Steiner. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Seriously, they are terrific. Bill King spent 10 minutes discussing the history of the Phillies, namedropping Pete Alexander and Eppa Rixey. They are easily one of the top five announcing crews today.

Now that I think about it, Vince McMahon's ladder legdrop WAS pretty cool!

Ok, it's days like this that I really hate Fox. Both Fox 56 and Fox 5 are showing the Yankees/Cubs game. Which means that because of Fox's network coverage, the team that I get on my cable coverage EVERY GAME is not on television today. Fuck Fox. They are truly a cancer on baseball.

It was apparent that Torre left in Pavano too long. I didn't see anything terribly bad off of Pavano. In fact, the Yankees' problem appeared more the poor defense at shortstop, and the fact that Ernie Lombardi would run on Tony Womack's arm without fear.
-
If Henn wasn't called up for the next series, I would have seen him in Scranton next week. As for Newhan, if the ball is in the seats, it is fair game for the fans. The fan is a dumbass, but it's not interference.
-
And Yankee fans once again display extreme intelligence.

Douche Mark Buehrle makes ridiculous accusations

http://www.suntimes.com/output/sox/cst-spt-ssep17.html I can’t get myself in trouble because he’s on the North Side. I don’t know personally, but I’m just saying from years of experience that he’s had success that he very well may be using something. -

1. It could have been Mike Remlinger. 2. It could be true. Lots of pitchers throw spitballs. -

Do you happen to have some sort of link? -
But I would think that also, since those were built as multi-purpose stadiums, that a park configured specifically for baseball would provide much better sight lines. As for Busch Stadium, that one is the most acceptable of the cookie cutters, they did a great job fixing it up and all, but the new Busch looks like it could be even better. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's true. There are definate improvements with the new parks.
-
There's nothing wrong with the cookie cutter stadiums really. Sure, the designs are not as nice, but there was no reason teams could not play there another 20, 30 or even 40 years. Look at Busch Stadium. That stadium is perfectly fine, yet they are getting a new one. It is all about adding luxury suites and profits, and little to do with the quality of the stadium. Yankee Stadium is not getting replaced because it is old, it is getting replaced so the Yankees can triple the available luxury suites.

Luis Gonzalez had it midway through last season, and he's back full strength this year, which is good news for Rocco. That's rough though, a torn ACL and a wrecked elbow??!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Tony Womack underwent TJ surgery in 2003 I believe.
-
I wish teams would start feuding over who has the biggest armrests. The new Fenway ownership has figured out that the park adds value to the franchise, and from what I hear from fans who attend, the park has improved dramatically over the last ten years.

It amuses me that Yankee fans are getting excited because of a home run off Jose Mesa.
