  2. The 1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers accomplished a similar feat, losing just once on their way to the NBA title. The received a first round bye, but I doubt the 8th best team in the East would've provided much of a challenge. How'd they manage a bye in the first round? At that time, it was a twelve team tournament instead of sixteen, and two divisions. So each division winner received a bye.
  3. The Braves are a different team. They have this strange concept that in order to win, you have to acquire bench players, relief pitchers, and have a farm system.
  4. The 1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers accomplished a similar feat, losing just once on their way to the NBA title. The received a first round bye, but I doubt the 8th best team in the East would've provided much of a challenge.
  5. They have a .500 record, and you're talking out of your ass if you think being 5.5 games behind the Orioles isn't anything to be worried about. It'll make it that much better when we do pass the Orioles. Will it matter when the Yankees are still 5 games behind the Red Sox?
  6. Now you're just talking out of your ass when there's Jeff Kent in the NL. I don't like Jeff Kent but he's millions of lightyears better than Matsui (and the Japanese fans aren't that stupid) Jeff Kent will easily win, seeing that he won by well over a million votes last year. Still, Matsui finished third last year when he was a shortstop, behind only Adam Everett and Edgar Renteria. While the Japanese effect will not help Kazuo as much as Hideki or Ichiro, it does exist. N.L. Shortstop will be very interesting. Renteria switched leagues, Everett was a hometown pick, Matsui changed positions, and Barry Larkin (4th in balloting) retired. That leaves Jack Wilson (currently hitting under the Mendoza line), Rafael Furcal, Alex Gonzalez (now playing on the Devil Rays), and Jimmy Rollins. Clint Barmes has an excellent chance of stepping into the void. For the record, here are my starters. Flame away... N.L. C- Paul Lo Duca, Fla 1B- Albert Pujols, StL 2B- Jeff Kent, LAD SS- Rafael Furcal, Atl 3B- Scott Rolen, StL OF- Barry Bonds, SFG OF- Adam Dunn, Cin OF- Bobby Abreu, Phi The Bonds pick is going to raise eyebrows, so let me explain. I base my picks on who is the BEST player currently. I don't see the selections as a reward for half a season of good performance. I view it as a person trying to select the best team possible. If Bonds is healthy (unlikely), he plays. If not, then you take the next player. I took Furcal over Barmes because Furcal has a track record. Barmes is having a nice season, but he has 145 at bats, and six walks. That is not an all-star. That is a hot streak. The rest are fairly self-explanatory I think. Rolen, same deal as Bonds. I can not exclude a player after nearly a decade of performance based on an injury. A.L. C- Ivan Rodriguez, Det 1B- Mark Teixeira, Tex 2B- Brian Roberts, Balt SS- Miguel Tejada, Balt 3B- Alex Rodriguez, NYY OF- Manny Ramirez, Bos OF- Ichiro Suzuki, Sea OF- Vladimir Guerrero, LAA DH- David Ortiz, Bos I was actually tempted to say what the heck and vote Tino, but Tino did not demonstrate this kind of power for years, while Teixeira has been a feared switch-hitting machine. For those wondering about Roberts, Roberts was nearly the best second baseman in the league last year (only Bellhorn was clearly better). Everything else is self-explanatory.
  7. Am I the only person who takes more than the current year into account when choosing All-Stars?
  8. I might have a homer pick in this, but I think Jimmy Rollins could be voted as the NL starter. Of course, do not count out the Nomar Garciaparra possibility.
  9. I think Iggy is saying he is more worried about falling behind the Red Sox and company, than he is about the Yankees. Which is true. I would be immensely surprised if the Yankees beat the Red Sox for the division crown.
  10. MLB.com says forearm tightness.
  11. I didn't catch the game, instead deciding to spent time with the gal. The Endy Chavez rumors have been ongoing for the better part of the year. Honestly, I don't know what anybody sees in Chavez.
  12. Endy Chavez. Endy F'n Chavez. I can't enough put it into words. The utter stupidity of this trade boggles the mind. We traded our best center fielder for a 5th outfielder. A fifth outfielder who is hitting .253 in AAA. We needed a center fielder with speed? Why the hell didn't we just call up Shane Victorino? An outfielder who, with the addition of being fast, can HIT THE DAMNED BALL. Thumbs down for the Phillies, who are rapidly losing my faith.
  13. You're right. The problem the Yankees have is that they have several players who quite honestly, have no business in a major league lineup. What the Yankees can do in the short term is outright dump Bernie Williams and a few others, and pick up some replacement level players to replace them. Minor league veterans like Ernie Young. Give Mitch Jones a shot. Second, and I can't believe I'm saying this, they need to make Rey Sanchez a regular player. Play him at second, or play him at short, and move Derek Jeter to center field. They need to shore up the defense. I'm not sweating the Yankees. The Red Sox however are just a game back, and have won eight of their last ten.
  14. In a way, the players are right. Philly fans boo at the first hint of bad play. Much of that is frustration, but I wonder sometimes if it costs us the home-field advantage we should enjoy. When the fans boo a player (in this case, Mike Lieberthal) at his first at bat of the game, there are problems.
  15. Others ran the statistics, but they bear repeating, and I will add a few. Giambi is hitting .198/.381/.321. Bernie Williams is hitting .245/.311/.309. Williams' argument in this case lies in the fact that his batting average is higher. Of course, batting average is not as good as slugging percentage or on base percentage, but hey, it is all about the hits right? Mike mentions that Bernie has more hits and RBIs. Ten to six is hardly a slam dunk win in the RBI category, but the larger problem is that Bernie has about 20 more plate appearances to work with. And that ignores another stat category. Giambi has scored more RUNS than Bernie has this season. You know, that thing that wins games? Looking over some advanced metrics, Giambi beats Bernie Williams in runs created, even with the deficit in plate appearances. If we go by Runs Created over 27 outs, Giambi smokes Bernie. Giambi hits for more power than Bernie Williams. Quite honestly, I am hard pressed to find a better argument for Bernie besides "he has a better batting average." Giambi walks often, and thus does not use outs, and gives the Yankees a baserunner with the potential to score runs. Bernie makes more outs. Granted, Giambi is as bad a player you can find with a .381 OBP. But .381 is .381. And that is much better than the low OBP and no power the Yankees are getting from Bernie, and Giambi is even more productive than regulars Tony Womack, Hideki Matsui, and Robinson Cano. Is Giambi finished? He is nearing the end, as his batting average and slugging are nowhere near respectable. But there are worse hitters on this team, and I have a hard time believing that sending Giambi to AAA accomplishes anything besides scraping a few million off the luxury tax. That is all this move is about. Money.
  16. It's funny. Bernie Williams is hitting worse than Giambi, and no one suggests sending HIM to Colombus.
  17. Michael Kay has his lips firmly planted to Derek Jeter's ass. Just out of curiosity, do you watch Angels games when they are not playing the Yankees?
  18. Bobby Abreu, for garnering one All-Star selection and one Top 20 MVP finish for being one of the best players in baseball.
  19. Then it appears we have no real option except to leave the team alone and at worse, let him accumulate losses.
  20. Ed Wade vs. Brian Cashman - duel to the death! I'm almost embarrased to point out Ed Wade sat one section over from me at the last Red Barons' game. I didn't approach him in anything, although I did get his autograph at a game a couple years ago.
  21. I gotta say though, it was nice that it was situated where it is, because I am VERY unfamiliar with the ins and outs of driving around Philadelphia. As an aside, paying $10 for parking is a miserable experience.
  22. Let him go for now. He's a multi-year Fantasy player with us.
  23. Sure they do. You've already mentioned Derek Jeter. The record though is at least 23 seasons, and I think either Carl Yastrzemski or Stan Musial has it.
  24. Well, despite the loss, my first trip to Citizens Bank Park was a fun experience. There is lots to see there, and plenty of attractions. My only complaint is that the seats are not wide enough. I felt more comfortable sitting in Lackawanna County Stadium.
  25. They did. Mike Williams pitched six innings in relief for the win.
