Its a term that lazy sportswriters use when they can't be arsed to find reasons why a team has suddenly improved. It seems team chemestry pops up because a team is winning, and not the other way around. But from a fan whose team thinks their lack of success is the result of a mythical curse and not from a lack of championship-caliber team, I can understand the sentiment. Too many home runs? What the heck does that mean? A-Rod is six months older.

Possibly. There's a large body of evidence suggesting AAA success is an indicator of big league success, and the line between a major leaguer and minor leaguer isn't as clear as one might think. As for comparing Harvey and Pickering, you're missing one key component. Pickering is far more PATIENT at the plate than Harvey.

Those numbers aren't an abberation. Pickering really can crush the ball. He hit 21 home runs in AAA in 2001, missed 2002, and hit 25 home runs in 291 at bats in Mexico in 2003. The only think that's held him back are his injuries, and his weight (Pickering is legitimately close to 300 lbs). BPro said he's better than Ken Harvey.

As for the pitching, there's nothing wrong. Only the Red Sox have allowed less runs than the Yankees. Its scoring runs that have kept them from dominating thus far.

Agreed with Ratings. Baseball is largely a game of organized chance. Its like playing blackjack, or poker. Play smart, and you'll win more often than you lose. But sometimes the other guys will draw better cards and there is nothing you can do about it. 30-40 at bats is miniscule in the baseball universe, and you really can't gather anything from them. That they are drawing walks is an encouraging sign. You can't expect more from them.

Far from it. Fans generally don't really care about the steroid issue. They believe (as do I) that baseball is played on the level, and baseball is experiencing an increase in popularity. Even if you think the NFL is more popular, its easily the #2 sports organization in the country.

I've always wondered how a fastball works. Fox sucks. They managed to piss me off with that saves stat. First off, saves are nothing more than a meaningless number. Second, and most important, you can not use saves to compare closers and set-up men! Set-up men gather save opportunities, but don't stay in to gather saves. They get holds instead. I hate this intentional misuse of statistics.

Its the impression of a conflict of interest that's the problem. MLB shouldn't let an umpire in that position at all, regardless of whether he does his job well. Besides, out of 2,000+ games in the big leagues, we're talking 32-35 games a year. That's not asking much.

Don't count on it. The commissioner is the owners' represenative, and chosen by them. The only reason they would go for an outsider is a complete lack of public confidence in baseball.
