  1. Even without the desegregation of baseball, the quality of baseball, or any sport for that matter, has improved over the years. You also have to remember that the best WHITE players weren't all playing in the majors. Advanced scouting techniques weren't fully in use at that point. The PCL and other minor leagues had some damned good players.
  2. He wrote that? God, he's an idiot. The difference is that certain steriods are illegal. If you use that logic, you can extend it to include eating and sleeping. They enhance performance as well.
  3. Damnit. Its frustrating to have games this sparingly early in the season. The Red Barons' doubleheader is likely gone tonight. THey've been trying to host their home opener for three days now.
  4. Obviously runs scored is best. I'm trying to convey that OBP correlates with runs much better than BA.
  5. They also lead AL teams with 40 walks. Batting average has little corelation with a team's success. OBP is a much better indicator.
  6. I'll have more in Monday's column, but the lineup the Cardinals threw out today was the worst I've seen from them in a long, long time.
  7. Bullshit. When the Expos were winning, they drew. In the 80s, they finished in the top 3 in attendance in the NL several times. The fans don't show up because ownership pissed on them. They couldn't even negotiate a tv contract. How the fuck are fans supposed to get excited about their team when they don't see them?
  8. Thank god I didn't set my lineup :b
  9. We'd get alot of stories about how Cobb is a "competitor," and he "plays the game right."
  10. Whatever happened to good old Moneyball theories?
  11. I'd like to point out that there are now three threads devoted to bitching about the oversaturation of Barry Bonds. Think about that.
  12. Forgot to set my lineups. This league is on a different account from my other four.
  13. You can say that again.
  14. I did them all myself. Its more fun that way.
  15. A week and a half in, and four players are injured. Man my luck sucks in these leagues.
  16. He's in the game. Just edit John Dowd, of the San Francisco Giants.
  17. I like Barry Bonds. I don't judge him by his attitude, just his performance. He's never been in trouble with the law, so I don't think he's a bad person. I blame ESPN for over-hyping it. Giving it air-time is fine, but interrupting everything else devalues it.
  18. For some reason I like the Astros' uniform.
  19. The Phillies looked good, or at least their home uniforms did.
  20. Well, 13 years of good baseball is tough to dispute. The only thing you can hit them for is the postseason, but statistically you only have an 8:1 shot of winning it all anyway. So one in 12 isn't too far out of line.
  21. I think the Angels are too high. Before that championship, they were the very definition of a cursed team. For some of the teams, an off-the-field moment could take precedense over their picks. For Yankee fans, was 1995 really worse than Thurman Munson's crash? Or Darryl Kile's death for Cardinals fans?

Ralph Wiley is an ass. He wrote a column last year pondering the lack of black athletes in baseball. The column included this gem...... News for Wiley (I'm sure he heard it many times): Stolen bases ARE overrated, and if Rickey had never stolen a base his entire career, he would STILL be in the HOF.
  23. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1781319 Anderson's good, but he turns 32 this year. He's got a .328 OBP, entering the decline phase of his career. And the Angels give him $12 Million. I think they really would've been better off shoring up their infield next offseason with that money. Its good to see them spending, but now they've got their entire outfield, plus Tim Salmon, locked up for the next three seasons. Anderson could be a big albatross by the end of this deal.

    Bonds/Aaron

A positive drug test, and a record of what drugs he took.
  25. Hell, why not? Beating the Braves in '93 was a glorious moment for Phillies fans.
