Jeff Jarrett's WWF Return... the one in 1997
cabbageboy replied to Boxer's topic in General Wrestling
The hilarious part of this was Jarrett saying WCW gave him no opportunities. I mean WTF? Vince gave him a shitty 2nd generation Honky Tonk Man act that was always lame. Bischoff at least let him be himself for the most part and at one point kinda joined the 4 Horsemen. It was Jarrett's own lack over overness that prevented him from doing more in WCW and even then he at least got the US title for a while. -
It was in the Death of WCW where they discussed that Garvin reign a bit. Ratings were in the 4.0 area when Flair had the title in 1987, but then when Garvin won it they tanked down to 2.8 in a month's time. Garvin is the epitome of a guy who was seen by fans as a solid enough challenger, but who should never, ever actually win the belt.

WWE General Discussion - September 2007

You know reading this made me think about how abstract the idea of putting someone over is, and how fragile it can be. Did Hogan really put over the Warrior in 1990? Hell you could say that since the Warrior never quite worked as champ then maybe Hogan didn't truly put him over. How about Yokozuna in 1993? Oddly enough I'd say Hogan put him over even if it wasn't clean. With that said, I think if you job out clean in the center to someone, that is putting someone over. If the guy who wins doesn't do much from there that is known as dropping the ball once he was put over. -

Just wondering but was there some kind of flat out heel turn that followed with the Freebirds or did they just start feuding with the Von Erichs after the cage match? I can't decide if I liked the booking of the cage match or not, since I was expecting a more thorough heel turn from Hayes, whereas the way it went down left it more open to interpretation. As in it seems like they would have an interview the next week with Hayes and he is interrupted by the Von Erichs, then Hayes and Gordy beat down Kerry or something. -
I don't totally buy that Flair had no opposition in 1987. On Flair's DVD they had the great 1 hour draw with Windham from 1987 and for the life of me I don't get why the NWA didn't follow up on it more. Windham wasn't as green as Luger, so why not take a chance on him as champ? Wouldn't it have made more sense than putting it on Ronnie Garvin for crying out loud?

Teke, ND hasn't been the same since BC made a game winning FG against them in 1993 that cost them the national title. I always kinda thought Illinois was a one year fluke circa 2001. I don't recall them doing much before or after, so call them the college version of the 1998 Falcons. As far as Miami goes, it's odd but it seems to me like that game vs. U of L in 2004 really did something to that program. The irony is that Miami did actually WIN that game, but look at the direction of the two programs since. Maybe it is a coincidence, who knows.

They would have to be beyond any level of retarded to put the belt back on Morrison. The guy was a wildly failed experiment, should have never gotten it to begin with, and his own 15 minutes of fame are over. Seriously if they just job Punk right back to him it's idiotic on so many levels. The roid issue is one thing, but how about the fact that Punk is actually over with the crowd and Morrison has heard nothing but crickets? -
I agree. As noted I'd like to see him get one last hurrah and retire at WM as the main guy going into the HOF. Then maybe put him in a GM type role on SD if they are tired of Teddy Long.

You know it's funny but I also noticed that Raw opening with Austin bleeding in a match from WM that had yet to happen! In all honesty both Raw and Nitro were pretty dreary this time. The next Raw will be really good though with the Sid/Bret cage match. The WCCW show had Flair/Kerry on it and that was quite the bizarre match. I've never seen a cage match with such rigidly enforced rules, but I guess it played into the eventual Hayes turn. In the intro Hayes acts like it was some master plan he and Gordy cooked up, but really it seemed like he was just sucking as a ref and eventually lost his cool. Didn't seem like a premeditated heel turn. -
Though it's way too early to be pondering this stuff, for my guys the best case scenario is this: VT upsets LSU, LSU beats FL, VT then would lose a couple in conf. play.

Not sure if I will see it or not (might wait for DVD) but I have to admit one part of the trailer cracked me up to no end. It was the part with Giamatti yelling at his men after Owen eluded them again and he said something like "Is this guy really this good or do we just suck this bad???"

I wish U of L had jumped ahead of Texas after that crappy effort Texas had. Ah well I think TCU has a real shot at taking the Longhorns down.

The only new stuff I seem to have is the new MNW show, a new NWA, and the long awaited WCCW show with Flair vs. Kerry on it. Was there anything else I'm missing? -
Samoa Joe and Alex Shelly staying in TNA

Okay the Shelley burial with Sabin makes a bit more sense now, but how do they explain Joe jobbing out to Angle and looking like a tool? -
Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released
cabbageboy replied to Human Fly's topic in The WWE Folder
This news doesn't shock me, and really it makes WWE look bad yet again since for the past 3 months they've had Orton out there giving people concussions on a weekly basis. -
The odd thing is that the NL Central yielded a 105 win Cardinals team in 2004, then another 100 win Cardinals team in 2005, along with the actual pennant winning Astros. I'd rather the Cardinals win the division this year, for the simple fact that they might actually do something in the playoffs. The Brewers would likely get swept with zero fanfare and we all know the Cubs would do something monumentally stupid....the Cardinals at least know what they are doing. If the Cardinals can get in a position to not start Reyes or Wells (Mulder coming back should help), then they could be a threat in the postseason.

I'm pretty sure Magnum was actually slated to beat Flair at Starrcade 86 and then had the car wreck that ended his career. From what I've heard Magnum was very much going to be the top face of the NWA. I wonder if that accident had an adverse effect on Dusty's booking as well, aside from the obvious thing of having a top guy's career ended in a flash. Cause it was Dusty's booking in 1987-88 that used all the Dusty Finishes and cheap crap and it makes me wonder if Dusty didn't lose his damn mind.

This was a fun show tonight, obviously enjoyed Punk winning the title even if it was very much spoiled for the past few days. I don't know if ECW is the best wrestling show on TV, but it is at least brief and doesn't outstay its welcome. Some of the best Raw shows ever were those 1 hour variety circa 1993....just nothing but action and pushing the angles that need it. At least ECW focuses on the core group that needs to be focused on. Oh, and isn't it ironic with Morrison that a guy who was doing the "15 minutes of fame" challenge just had his own 15 minutes of fame end tonight?
-
Yeah I don't get this move at all. In fact it has to be a ploy. First off, I thought Flair was in trouble with the IRS and thus had to stay around in WWE to pay off the debt. Second, he was likely going to retire at WM next year and get a big send off. Why would he quit now?
-
Well, ignoring the silly Steve Corino moment re: Dusty/Magnum....anyway, I think the NWA would have been much better off with Magnum TA as champion circa 1987-88. Cause the NWA didn't really have much during that time period on the face side until Luger and Sting hit the scene in the late 80s.

I'm glad they are showing those 1993-95 Raws, since there was all sorts of great stuff on those early Raw shows. I think the 1993 period is actually one of the best times for week to week WWF wrestling. Raw was unlike anything I'd ever seen back then. -
Bored, I guess some people still think FSU is good or something.

It can't be RVD. WWE just started testing for marijuana. I have to say they've got me right now, I have no idea who this is going to be. Kennedy was tailor made for the role, so whoever the replacement is likely will suck.

Rob Zombie to direct next Halloween movie
cabbageboy replied to Lil' Bitch's topic in Television & Film
Okay, I think some people here are overreacting. Look, it's not as though the Halloween series overall is any good since Michael has never been a particularly interesting killer and the series becomes rehash after rehash of the same plot (Michael escapes and is after his sister, niece, etc.). While the original Halloween is obviously a better movie than Friday the 13th, I actually think the Jason series is much better at doing different things and bringing new wrinkles (his mom is in the first one, Jason shows up in part 2, gets the mask in 3, and so on). The main problem I had with Zombie's film is that it didn't know what it wanted to be. If it had stayed with the crazy white trash vibe of the first half and done something different for the whole movie, then it would have been better. Flat out remaking the first film in the 2nd half hurt it, since most people have seen the first one and know how much better those scenes were done. Therein lies the problem with remaking Halloween as opposed to TCM. The original TCM has very little plot, just these people getting killed by Leatherface and a bunch of weird shit with the family. There's no real concrete plot that has to be adhered to, so you can do a remake and add the crazy R. Lee Ermey character, do some different things. Halloween has much more of a rigid plot that must be adhered to, more characters like Laurie and Loomis. -
Iggy, glad to see U of L so high on your poll. It's a bit early to even know though. Frankly I don't think GA Tech is remotely a top 10 caliber team (no one in the ACC is), they just beat a ND team that may well be hopeless this year. Let's see if Tech keeps it up. The polls overall are idiotic. For instance why in the hell is Texas ranked #4 in the nation? They didn't do shit last year and from that first game they don't look to be all that good, yet I guess due to name alone they are in the top 5? Or VA Tech being #9. That's not as big of a problem though since LSU will roll them next week. I always hear on ESPN and in the paper stuff like "We need to take the computers out of the equation! It needs to have more human factor!" Yeah that's just what we need, more emphasis on a bunch of coaches who don't watch half of the games and mainly vote along party lines for their own team and conference. Or media members fixated on a particular area or conference (Plaschke for Pac 10, Mariotti for Big 10, Paige for SEC, etc.). But yeah, let's get rid of the computers who just look at overall results, game scores, SOS, and the like.
