What's happened to him and when did it start? JR became a parody in 2000 when Austin came back and JR started masturbating like a little girl over his return. He's been downhill ever since...

Rendclaw Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 I still say they should get two announcers who can repeat either the Gorilla Monsoon/Jesse Ventura or Gorilla Monsoon/Bobby Heenan style of announcing. Either way works for me. Cole and Tazz are kinda there...but they do some dumb shit too. There is NO way that any commentating team could come even close to the magic of Gorilla/Heenan or Gorilla/Ventura. The only team that comes anywhere close is Schiavone/Tenay, although Schiavone/Zbysko was just flat out amusing at times.

Sure you do have all the "This is the biggest night in the history of our great sport" every night, but how is that any different than Ross's hyperbole nowadays? JR has become Schiavone in a way, kind of like how someone becomes their enemy by being bad. THAT MADE NO SENSE WHY DID I SAY THAT LAST SENTENCE

I never thought Schavonie was as bad as everyone says he is. Obviously, he wasn't anywhere near the best, but I don't think he's worse than JR today. His only major flaw was his total oversell of everything ("This is the most important ____ in the history of our sport"; "The NWO is out to kill somebody"; etc). However, JR does the exact same thing, but he doesn't know as many moves as Tony either. Another thing poor Tony had against him was a weak support crew. He didn't seem as bad with Heenan or even Tenay, but when he was paired with Dusty Rhodes, Stevie Ray, Mark Madden, Larry Zbysko, or Steve McMichael, he had no one to help him out. JR is in a similar situation with Lawler.

But in the Nitro era, he was every bit as bad as Ross, even worse I think. Every week I would be more amazed at how dumb he was. The only moves he ever consistently called were 'belly to back suplex' and 'sidewalk slam' (and he would often wrongly call different moves as sidewalk slams, this was a running joke in the IWC). There even came a time, and I can't really remember when this happened, when he couldn't even be bothered to remember most of the names of the wrestlers' finishers, he would just scream THAT'S HIS MOVE, THAT'S HIS MOVE!!

RAW is a soap opera show so the two of them have to put over the storylines. This means making every face look like God himself and making every heel appear to be the most evil thing walking the Earth. ANY announcer will sound like a total moron if they have to sit their and yammer about how evil Stevie Richards, Three-Minute Warning and Test are.

This is the same thing Tony Shiavone went through. He was a good announcer too, until he stopped caring. Tenay is the best announcer in wrestling today though. I like how he adds all kinds of facts and info about the wrestlers and matches.

Adam Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 Shiavone flat out amuses me sometimes, he actually called a hurricanrana a headscissors and then a frankensteiner in the same match. I just think he wanted fans to believe that the same move wasn't being performed twice.
