Fox News sues Franken

Recommended Posts

Rush and Franken pretty much both approach politics at a humerous angle. They can both be serious at times. Most times you do know what you'll get from them.

About as many take Rush seriously as take Dean-o seriously.

                                -=Mike

I'd say more people take Dean-O Machino seriously than Limbaugh. One is a potential candidate, the other is a political pundit. And on another note, Fox News gives conservatives a bad name. It portrays them as flag-waving loudmouths who don't know when to shut up. Most conservatives I know are normal people, the same goes for liberals.

One is a twice best-selling author and host of the largest talk radio program in the country. The other is the hottest candidate in the Democratic field several months before that does him any good whatsoever.

If Dean had $10 for each of Limbaugh's listeners, he'd be pretty well-funded already.

Note: I don't listen to Rush. But a lot of people do, so it's pointless to say no one takes him seriously.

Have you ever seen the in-depth analysis on these guys?

People who don't agree listen longer than those that do. Hell, my mom, Mrs. Liberal, keeps tuning in FNC to see "what those raving republicans are up to." She refers to the hosts of Fox & Friends as "The Three Stooges," but she watches it every single day.

So your mom keeps them on the air by watching?

Brilliant woman she is.

Does she also punch herself in the head periodically?

Let's see.

One of the mentioned has:

Served in the Vermont House (from 1982 to 1986)

Elected lieutenant governor of Vermont (1986)

Become Governor of Vermont (1991)

Arguably, the forerunner for the Democration Presidential Nomination (2003)

The other aformentioned man has:

A brother who is a federal judge!

So there.

She likes the "Raving Republicans" sometimes?

She's not as centerist as I am, but she's getting there because the left here is becoming too far left even for her.

She'll still vote for someone just for having the little (D) next to their name, but she can't bring herself to embrace the homeless and illegal immigrants like the Greens and far-left Dems are doing. Those two groups are starting to become VERY important here in California.

Here's the thing that's always bothered me with making jokes about Limbaugh & Moore's weight - it's too goddamn easy.

I mean, if you're going to insult either man based upon the fact that you don't like their ideology, at least have the decency to do it in a more witty manner than "OMG He's got a great big fat ass!"

1) Can't make fun of Rush's weight anymore.

2) I don't mock Mikey's weight (not to mention overall looks) because I don't like his ideology -- I mock him because I think he's an annoying tub of lard. I think it would be golden if someone would bring a wagon-full of Slim-Fast up to his swank NYC apartment, complete with video cameras and such, much like Mikey does when he bothers some 90-year old security guard at a corporate office because he wants to give a 90-cent check to the company to pay for the first hour's wage of their newest employee in Mexico.

Actually, I'm pointing out his physical condition as a plea for him to get his plump rear-end on a tread mill or something. I don't know what I'd do should he keel over of a heart attack...

California has a habit of running to extremes, do they not?

I wonder what his thoughts are on the liberal fat police? Heaven help Michael Moore, if the liberal politicians and lawyers sue Baskin Robbins into bankruptcy, as they are trying to do, with McDonalds.

I think Mikey should have the right to stuff his face with Blueberry Cheesecake and Rocky Road, without being judged.

Fox-Franken lawsuit arguments scheduled

Release date of book moved up

Tuesday, August 19, 2003 Posted: 2:40 PM EDT (1840 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Oral arguments have been scheduled for Friday for the Fox News Channel's lawsuit against humorist Al Franken.

U.S. District Judge Denny Chin set the date after a brief hearing Monday.

Last week, Fox sued the former "Saturday Night Live" performer and his publisher, the Penguin Group, to stop them from including "fair and balanced" in the title of his upcoming book.

The trademark infringement lawsuit seeks to force Penguin to rename "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right. It also asks for unspecified damages.

Fox registered "Fair & Balanced" as a trademark in 1998.

Penguin, in court papers filed Monday, said the suit is "lacking in merit" and "antithetical to free expression concerns protected by the First Amendment."

So far, the legal action has only helped sell the book, which for the past week has been in the top 10 on Amazon.com. Penguin originally planned a print run of 250,000, but announced Monday that it had ordered an additional 40,000 copies.

"The extra printing is definitely a result of the interest generated from the lawsuit," said Penguin spokeswoman Lisa Johnson.

Penguin also moved up the publication date from September 22 to the end of this week, meaning books will likely be on sale by the time of Friday's hearing.

Franken and Bill O'Reilly, the popular Fox news host, have publicly feuded and the lawsuit includes highly personal criticisms.

The news channel described Franken, an author and liberal commentator, as "neither a journalist nor a television news personality. He is not a well-respected voice in American politics; rather, he appears to be shrill and unstable. His views lack any serious depth or insight."

Fox alleged that Franken was "either intoxicated or deranged" when he attacked the network and O'Reilly at an April press correspondents dinner. The lawsuit also says that Franken has been described as "increasingly unfunny."

"As far as the personal attacks go," Franken responded last week, "when I read 'intoxicated or deranged' and 'shrill and unstable' in their complaint, I thought for a moment I was a Fox commentator.

"And by the way, a few months ago, I trademarked the word 'funny.' So when Fox calls me 'unfunny,' they're violating my trademark. I am seriously considering a countersuit."

Neither Franken nor O'Reilly attended Monday's hearing.

Once again: hook, line, and sinker. Fox has given Franken exactly what he wanted: more sales, more publicity, and more opportunities to slam them in a public forum.

My God, Fox News is run by idiots. Franken is making them his bitch. They've gobbled up his bait and swallowed the hook.

Unless Fox WINS the suit --- in which case, this is a HUGE problem for Al and the publishers.

Not really, the books are already sold.

Ask the Verve how much it hurts when you lose a copyright suit.

Their ONE hit, "Bittersweet Symphony" only made them 1000 pounds while ALL of the rest of the money made had to go to the Rolling Stones.

If FNC wins, Franken and his publishers will owe some serious money.

He'll probably be all for it, since fast-food joints are big corporations anyway.

Wow, he's not wearing his Tigers hat...

'60 Minutes' needs more FAT victims. Michael Moore would be a perfect candidate to help steal more private funds for public disposal, from those darn, bad-ole corporations. The cigarette money ran out in 1999.

As for Al Franken, and his countersuit and generally the way he talks, I give you this quote.

"Whining is anger through a small opening."-Stuart Smalley

I sincerely doubt he's writing the book for the money.

I'll guarantee you he is doing it for money. A LOT of money, to boot.

You don't often publish books just for the joy of writing.

The man is worth a ton of money. He's doing it because he wants to piss people off and get the message out there.

Tyler, much as I find your naivete cute, that is absurd. Pretend he's a Republican and consider if you'd think the same thing.

You don't write books to be published without a serious monetary goal.

I don't think Coulter writes her books to gather huge sums of money. I think she does it because she believes in her distorted little mind that she's unveiling the "truth" about liberals and the left.

Here's your only possible ulterior motive for Franken: he's using it as a basis to launch the liberal radio station.

No, she does it for money.

They don't often turn down the advances or royalties.
