From City To City, Looking at WWE Fans

You can't really base how good a show is by the live crowd. It depends on the city. Some cities just pop for the sake of popping. Some pop because they never get a show, so it's big deal when they see any superstar. Other cities are quiet because they want to *gasp* see wrestling. Some cities are nostaligic. Some cities like different people.

 

I brought up in OAORaw that we should profile the various venues and compare how their fans are and its effect on the program, so here's a thread for that purpose.

 

I'll start with the Northeast.

Uniondale, NY: Often bored, evidently. This is likely because they get the most shows, easily. Long Island being an old WWWF territory, Vince feels the need to come often. The Long Island fans seem to be jaded and not easily excited by the show, to the point where Paul Heyman had to reprimand the crowd over the house mic for sitting on their hands. From what I've seen and heard, these same fans provide the same apathy for Isles games.

 

Montreal, PQ: Canadian fans are always a rabid bunch, and love their wrestling. Despite having to sit through various Screwjob reenactments in addition to THE one, and WWE blatantly bashing their Canadian fan contingent on TV, they still support the product. They will cheer Canadian wrestlers over anyone else despite face/heel association. And of course, the innovators of TWOOOO.

 

Philadelphia, PA: I don't know what their deal is, but Philly fans are weird for the four sports AND wrestling. Being ECW country, you get a definite renegade feeling, and they will cheer and boo who they please.

 

New York, NY: Some of the best fans out there at MSG. You ahve the historic venue, and WWE shows here are just inherently better, and made better even further by MSG fans. Not the same crowd as Nassau's.

Toronto is like Montreal in most respects. They cheer for Canadians above all others, and generally are very involved in the show. They, along with Montreal, worship the ground Hulk Hogan walks on, and are mainly responsible for Hogan's red-and-yellow push following WMX-8. They also do not like the Rock, or Goldberg.

Boston, MA: Hardcore, rabid fans who enjoy their wrestling and entertainment...and DON'T enjoy a stupid product & matches. Tons of old-school fans, and always a big area for the WWE to make some $$$ because they'll always get at least 3/4 of the Fleet sold out for any event they do.

I've gone to many shows at the Nassau Coliseum. Since that Raw when Heyman got pissed they have been warming up more and more to the shows probably since we only get one every five or six months. Last night's house show though deserved to be met with apathy. However, look at last year's SummerSlam. The thing about that crowd is that the wrestlers need to work pretty damn hard in order to impress.

Let me tell you about Long Island. Everyone there is apathetic about EVERYTHING. People get new BMW's from their daddy and they're like, "Eh, it's not as cool as my friend's Mercedes." Half of the people that go to the Nassau Coliseum are rich bitch Hofstra students who are going just because it's 2 minutes away and they have nothing else to do. The real wrestling fans are in the 5 boroughs. Call it an unfair generalization if you must, but Nassau County is nothing but spoiled brats on the shores and people struggling to survive in the ghettos in the central portion of the island.

 

Sorry, I just hate Long Island, despite living here.

I thought the apathy was a result of oversaturation as opposed to undersaturation. I feel bad for Portland.

That said, as bad as Long Island may be, I despise the Devils from the bottom of my heart, while I only mock the Islanders for those fisherman sweaters they had that one year, and for being such a shell of what they once were.

Philly & NY used to be fun crowds to watch when WCW/ECW were still around because they brought a well rounded attitude to the live atmosphere rather than just, "cheer the good guy, boo the bad guy, wow what a great fucking show Vince" attitude. However it has been a couple years now and even NY/Philly are slowly reverting back to being just like the rest.

Most of the wealthy people live in Suffolk county. Sure the Coliseum is near Hofstra, but it is also smack in the middle of one of the most run down and crime-filled parts of Long Island. As for your little analysis of the area, I live in the middle of the two shores and I'm not struggling to survive in a ghetto either. Sure 15 minutes away the area is quite run down, but then again 15 minutes away is also Queens. And to think YOU live here. Maybe that explains the general stupidity of the crowds at the Nassau Coliseum. However, everyone has failed to explain the heat at SummerSlam last year. The ultimate problem with the Long Island crowd as compared to the NYC crowd is that a lot of families go to the shows at the Coliseum, whereas MSG attracts more teenagers and younger adults.

Cleveland: There have been a handful of exceptions, particularly the night of the WCW purchase/Nitro simulcast, but it's usually a hot crowd as long as you give them even decent wrestling matches. I remember one live Thunder they did where they had one match over four minutes (and that only going about 4:15), and they got booed out of the building for it. At the same time, there's a reason the Cleveland areas had 6 PPVs...they tried to get into The Godfather vs. Mideon at No Mercy 99 for chrissakes.

I have to agree with this. It seems as if the ECW generation around here is dying out completely and the casual fans are the ones going. The last few events in Philly I haven't even noticed the Hawaiian shirt guy which is a bad sign. Philly will always have an edge to it, but it won't really stand out from any other northeast city anymore.

In case you hadn't noticed, I said it was an unfair generalization. Obviously not everyone specifically is dwelling in a ghetto, but a vast majority of people are living in crappy apartments or crappy 50-year-old mass-produced homes that cost $300,000, so people can't afford to do shit besides pay rent or a mortgage. That's what I mean my struggling. So chill.

Minneapolis broke 10,000 for our recent SmackDown house show. I was there, it was pretty awesome. As the crowds go, they're usually pretty hot. "Minnesota nice" carries over to crowd appreciation; of all the sports events and concerts I've been to in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, and St. Louis, MN is usually the hot spot, although the Raw at the Rosemont Horizon where Jericho debuted was the hottest crowd EVAH.
